Description
(Model.)
I l I T. G. MULLINIX.
SAD IRON.
Patented May 2, 1882.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THEODORE G. MULLINIX, OF CLINTON, INDIANA.
SAD-IRON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,367, dated-May 2, 1882.
Application filed March 8, 1882. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THEODORE O. MULLINIX, a citizen of the United States, residing at Olinton, in the county of Vermillion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sad-Irons, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has relation to smoothing or sad irons; and the novelty consists in the construction of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, similar letters of reference indicate like parts of the invention.
Figure l is a view in dotted lines of the haudledetached and opened, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the iron and handle attached and the boss a in section.
A is the body of the iron, provided with a boss, or, in which are cast tapering sockets B and O.
G is the handle, and is hinged at D, the free ends E and F of which are tapering or wedge shape, so as to closely fit into the sockets B and O, as seen in Fig. 2.
It will thus be seen that the construction of the device is of the very simplest nature, and the handle may be changed from one iron to another very readily, and this is accomplished without the intervention of levers, springs, or catches of any kind. Consequently there is nothing of the kind to get out of order.
I am aware that sad-irons having a divided or hinged handle so arranged as to be interchangeable have heretofore been used, and such I do not broadly claim.
Having thus fully described my-invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States,
The iron A, having the boss at, provided with tapering sockets B and O, in combination with the handle G D, hinged in the center and having the tapering wedge-shaped ends E F, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THEODORE O. MULLINIX.
Witnesses:
THOMAS J. WooLs, DANIEL F. BURNS.
