END-GATE FOR WAGONS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,235, dated May 2, 1882,

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OTIS WARREN MOORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Monticello, in the county of Piatt and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in End-Gates for W'agons, ot'which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a detachable end-gate for farm-wagons which can be detached and removed at will, requiring no hinges, and free from the danger ot'rust and breakage. I attain these objects by the construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bed of a wagon provided with my new end-gate. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same. Fig. 3 is an end elevation.

A is the box or body of an ordinary framewagon, having thesides T andVand provided with my new and improved end-gate. The side T, at its rear end, on the inside, has an iron plate, D, secured toit by screws or bolts (1 d. The plate D is provided with holes G G for the reception of the iron rods or pins E E, and these holes Gr G also extend through the strip M. The side-board T is provided with only a single strip, 0, which is on the inside and at the forward end of the plate D, the endgate resting against this strip 0 when closed. V, the other side-board, is providedwith strips N and O, which form a groove, X, at the rear end for the reception of the end-gate. The strips N and O are chambered, as shown in Fig. 2.
B is my end-gate, made or formed like the common gate,at one end having a singlestrip or standard, S, and fitting in between the standards N and O. The inside of the end of the gate B, near the standard S, is beveled, as indicated by R. end to the standard S on the outside, has two standards, L and M, as shown in Fig. 1. When the gate is closed one end of E passes through the holes in M into the holes G in the sheet-iron plate D, while the other end of E lies flat in the groove between L and M, and is secured from accidentally becoming loose by a snap-catch, P. v
W is the ordinary brace-rod placed inside of the end-gate, passing through the standards or strips 0 and M and the side-boards T and V, and made secure by nuts at its ends.
The construction of my end-gate is such that it has no hinges to rust or break, and is composed of one board, and its fastenin gs are very secure.
The manner of operationis as follows: Slide the end. of B at S into the groove X between N and 0. Then raise the ends of EEand pull them back into the notches K K, and then push the end of B adjacent to M against the standard (3, when the end will rest on the plate D, and the end-board is ready to be made secure. To make secure the rods or bolts E E are pushed into the holes G G of the standard M and plate D, and the outer ends are dropped down between the standards L and M and held secure by the snap-catch P, and the end-gate will be firm and solid. To remove the end-gate simply unfasten the 5 back into the notches K, when the end-gate will be unfastened and will be readily removed.
