` UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES SGHWITTER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
ART OF MAKING WATCH-CASES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,083, dated April 25, 1882.
Application filed December 15, 1881. (No model.)
ATo all-whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES SOHWITTER, a citizen ot Switzerland, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State ot New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Watch-Gases, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the manufacture ot' covers for watch-cases, and has for its ob- Io ject to provide an improved method of making for a watch-case constructed aecordingto my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same in thc plane a: Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar section of the rim and thehead detached.
Similarletters indicate corresponding parts.
In watch-cases with ornamental rims the rims are usually constructed separate from the ornaments, and then the ornaments are secured to the edges of the rims by solder. For the purpose of forming the rim a straight bar of metal is rolled or drawn to the required shape, and afterhavin g been eut to the required shape this bar is formed into a ring, its ends being secured together by means ot' solder.
For the purpose of manufacturing my watchcase I roll out a piece of silver, gold, or other 'metal suitable for the purpose of the thickness desired, and from that sheetl cutout by means ot' suitable dies the rim A, together with the desired ornaments a a., in one piece, (see Fig. 3,) and then I cutout a blank of suitable size, and from this blank I stamp up the head B in the form shown in Fig. 3, and finally I secure the head to the rim by means of solder.
It will be readily seen from this description that in manufacturing watch-cases with ornamental rims according to my invention much time and labor are saved, and, furthermore, a great variety of ornamental rims can beproduced by providing different dies.
.What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The method herein described of making covers for watch-cases, which consists in cutting or stamping out thc ornamental rimA in a singlehomogeneous piece ot' meta-l, then stamping or striking up from a blank the head B,
and finally uniting the rim to the edges of the head by means of solder, substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES sonWITTER. lL. s]
