This invention relates to a hair trimming comb and is particularly directed to improvements in comb structures which employ an adjustably mounted razor for cutting and trimming hair.
Among the objects of this invention is to provide an improved form of hair trimming comb having substantially the same cutting or trimming action on either of two edges. Another object is to provide a hair trimmin comb of this type having smooth flowing contours and an absence of unwieldy projections so that either face thereof may be placed next to the head of the user.
A particular object is to provide a more improved form of drive for moving the'razor relative to the comb body, the drive incorporating lock means for maintaining the razor in adjusted:
position.
A more particular object is to provide alocking device having a minimum number of parts and which is readily actuated between locking and released positions.
Another object is to provide an easily operable friction lock for holding the razor carrier in" selected position. 1 Y
Other and more detailed objects and advantages will appear hereinafter.

Referring to the drawings, the hair trimming comb generally designated [0 includes a comb body ll provided with teeth [2 extending along a forward'edge. Teeth I3: are also formed on the comb body-and extend for a portion of the length thereof along the rear edge. A razor blade lll'ha'ving' sharpened edges I5 and I6 is attached to a carrier I! mounted for movement trans versely of the comb body II. A gear'rack I8 is provided on the inner-end l9 of the carrier'l'l and 'a' driving gear 20 meshes with the rack "3.
Turning of the gear 20 serves to advance and retract the carrier H and razor blade [4 with respect to the comb body ll. Lock means are provided for securing the gear 2|] with respect to the comb body II, thereby preventing move-'- ment of the carrier l1 and blade 14 with respect to the comb body. I
' Referring to-theparticular parts of the construction in more detail, the comb body I l isprovided with a lip 22'at its outer end adapted to overlie the flange 23 at the outer end of the The comb body II is also provided carrier 11. with a lip 24 which overhangs the flange 25 at the inne'r end of the carrier [1. flange 25 is received within a groove 21 provided on the comb body. When it is desired to change the position of the carrier I! and blade 14 with respect to the comb body II, the rotary control member 35 is grasped between the thumb and forefinger of the user and rotated with respect to the comb body II. This turns the gear 20 and causes rack I8 to advance or retract the carrier H, as desired." The carrier may then be locked in its adj-listed position, and this is accomplished by pushing the lock ring 34 toward the comb body ll, there.- by frictionally engaging theconical surface 33-on the rock ring within the conical bore 32 on the comb body II. The rotary control member 36 v is thus moved along its axis as a unit and. the frictional engagement of the surfaces 32and-33 effectively prevents rotation of the member 36 and hence the rack l8;,and carrier I1 are held in. adjusted position.
When ,itis desired torelease'the locking action, theknob 35 is moved toward the comb body ll, thereby separating thelocking: surfaces 32 and; 33.. The position of the parts in released position is shown in Figure 5. If, desired, the 1 ck;-ring:,,34; may be provided with a central conical.recess..39. which may act as asuction grip on-the-thumb of the user. The knob 35 may also have a conical; recess in its outer-surface, and thisrecess is preferably provided withser rations .40-.-xfor enhancingthe frictional grip of they user; in order to turn therotary control member 36.
The exposed-outer surface 41 of the. carrier II is provided with a plurality of shallow recesses 42 which align with thepattern of the teeth l2" on the-comb body. Thesurface 4| is .alsoprovided with a. series of' indentations 43 which-- alignwith the pattern of theteeth l3" onthej. comb. body. The surface4l has its counterpart, on the back face-ofithe comb bodyopposite the position ofthe carrier II; The front and back: faces of the hair trimming comb I are there-- fore: substantially similar as shown in Figure 1 andvery nearly symmetrical with-respectito the central razor blade l4. Furthermore, the knob 35'; projects;for a, distance-similarlto the projectionof the lock ring 34 so that the two sides of" the=hairtrimming comb are very much alike. Accordingly, the device may be used withleithersideincontactwith the head of the user. The. comb 1! may likewise be used oneither side on otherparts of therbody such as, for example, in: shaving or trimming hair from the legs or arms Whenitis desired to, insert a new razor blade H, the rotary control member 35 is'turned'to advance the, rack 18 to theend of its stroke-and; the carrier and razor blade are, then withdrawn: manually; A new blade is inserted on,;the protuberances29 land the assembled blade and carrier are then reinserted'under the lips 22' and 24." When the knob 35a is depressed as shown in Figure 9, the teeth 44 and 45 are separated so that the gear 20a can be turned for advancing and retracting the rack IBa. When the lock ring 3411, is moved in a direction to bring the teeth 44 into mesh with the teeth 45, rotary motion of the lock ring 34a and knob, 35a is effectively prevented. The cylindrical bore 45 in the comb body I la fits the cylindrical projection 41 on the lock ring 34a sufficiently close so that frictional resistance is developed to hold the rotary control member 36a in selected axially adjusted position;
In the-further modified form of my invention shown in Figures 11 and 12, the knob 35b is arrangedto. fitwithin a shallow recess or counterbore provided in the back face of the comb body llb. 1. In a-hair trimming comb device, the combi nation of-a comb body, a carrier for a sharpened blade, means for mounting the carrier for'sliding,
movement relative to the comb body,- a two-part rotary; control member, means connecting the; two parts for operation as a unit, a rack on the" carrier, a; gear on one-of the parts of the'rota'ry control member meshing with the rack wherebythe rotary control member may advance and retract the carrier, and rotation lock means comprising cooperating-parts on, the comb body. and
