(Cl. 132-79) Multi-color pencils are known having exchangeable lead carriers which,by means of knobs slidable in guide slots in the pencil case and engageable in notches, can be separately pushed out of their inoperative position into the position for use and returned .from this position for use into their inoperative position, and in each of which the individual leads are shiftable by means of a screw mechanism. The use of these pencils,

for which leads, especially colored leads of relatively great thickness, are required, presented difllculties which increased when it was endeavoured to employ such a multi-color pencil for make-up sticks. The make-up sticks consist of a very soft substance and therefore break very easily. Consequently, care must be taken to return the stick into its carrier after use. Moreover, owing to the softness of the sticks, they very easily soil the fingers. For this reason it is not practical to move the sticks, in the manner customary in the case of multi-color pencils,-by gripping the front end of the lead carrier, which generally only projects slightly from the pencil case, with the fingers, which consequently come into contact with the lead also.

All the requirementsabove enumerated are met by the invention which relates to a multiple pencil, especially for make-up sticks, with exchangeable stick carriers which, by means of slides guided in slots in the pencil case and engageable in a notch, can be pushed forward out of their sition of rest into their position for use an returned into their position of rest, and in each of which carriers a stick is shiftable by-means of a screw mechanism. The invention is characterized in that the rotatable part of each stick carrier has at its front end at least one lateral projection or the like, that the conical point of the pencil case is rotatable and has in its interior at least one catch for engaging the projection when the carrier is pushed forward into its position for use, so that, after this carrier has been pushed forward, the stick can be pushed forwards and backwards in its carrier by the conical pencil case point being turned. The front end of the rotatable part of each stick carrier may be constructed as a multiple thread screw with steep pitch and the conical point of the pencil case may have in its interior longitudinal'ribs corresponding to the screw threads. By this arrangement, when a stick carrier is pushed forward, its

front end automatically engages the point of the pencil case without it being necessary to turn this point through a large angle of rotation. Owus ing to the interengagement of the ribs and threads the point of the stick carrier sits very tightly in the point of the pencil case.

By means of the construction above described it is. possible, after a stick carrier has been pushed forward, to bring the make-up stick or 5 the like into its position for use, without it being necessary to grip the point of the stick carrier itself. Only the point of the pencil case has to be turned. The fingers cannot possibly become soiled. Moreover, thestick carrier itself 10 need not project from the point of the pencil case so that the overall length of the pencil is not greater when ready for use than when all the stick carriers are in their position of rest.

A pencil of this type may be constructed in 15 such a manner that the individual stick carriers must be pushed by hand not only into position for use but also pulled back into their position of rest. It is,'however, likewise possible to provide one or several return'springs (pressure or 20 tension springs) for the stick carriers, so that the carriers slide back out of the position for use into their position of rest under. the action of the return springs after disengagement of their locking means. If such return springs are 25 provided and the notches securing the stick carriers in their position of use are formed in known manner as lateral widenings at the front end of the guide slot for accommodating the slide knobs of the stick carriers, it is advisable to arrange 30 the notch widening on that side of the slot that, when the stick has been turned completely back by means of the rotatable pencil case point and. after the abutment of the slide sleeve containing the stick, the whole stick carrier is rotated and its 35 slide knob pressed out of the notch. In this manner, by turning the pencil case point, the stick, after being used, is not only turned into its carrier so that it is best protected against fracture, but by the same rotary movement the carrier 40 itself is likewise disengaged from its notch so that it can slide into its position of rest under the action of the return spring.

When employing such a multiple pencil for make-up sticks, it is important that its appear- 45 ance is as good as possible. It is therefore advisable for the slide knob of each stick carrier to be so long that, when in its position of rest, it covers the whole guide slot and for a blade spring fixed on the stick carrier and carrying the slide 50 knob to cover the inner side of thes'lot when the stick carrier is in its position for use. The necessary guide slots in the pencil case will then. scarcely be visible, and moreover by covering these slots on their inner side by means of the blade springs even when the pencil is ready for use the penetration of dust and dirt will be prevented.

The constructions of the stick carriers and the return springs and their arrangement may be similar to those known in multiple color pencils. It is still more important forthe whole pencil to be as short as possible in the case of makeup. stick pencils than in the case of lead pencils.

For this purpose, in the case of multiple stick pencils having a retum spring for each stick carrier each return spring may advantageously be accommodated in a tubular sleeve fixed at the side of the stick carrier. The stick carrier and the tubular sleeve may be fixed on the blade spring carrying the slide knob.-

In the case of pencils with a separate return spring for each stick carrier, the stationary portions of the stickcarriers carrying the return springs may be hooked in slotsin a supporting plate. To prevent the stick carriers from wabbling in their slots and thereby to avoid lateral movement of the slide knobs, the thickened ends of the stick carriers bearing against the sup porting plate may be accommodated in holes in a holding plate resting on the supporting plate.

Each stick carrier 3, it has an outer sleeve II, II, the front part II of which is wider than the rear part i3. The rear end 230i part i3 is narrowed and carries the above mentioned blade spring ii. In the part i3 a pressure spring 23 is mounted on a rod 2i with thickened and 22. This rod 2i also has a thickened portion 24 at its rear end. A sleeve 25 isrigidlyconnected with the front part i3 of thestick carrier 3 and has a helical slot 25'. An inner sleeve 21 with a longitudinal slot 23 is rotatable in this sleeve 23 and held by a shoulder 23 at its rear end. A ring 23 is soldered on the front end of the slotted sleeve 21 and has on its outer side longitudinal ribs 33 which correspond with the longitudinal grooves 3 in the case point 3.

Finally. a small sliding sleeve II is mounted in the slotted' sleeve 21 and has a transverse pin 32 which engages in the helical slot 25' in the sleeve 25 through the longitudinal slot 28. The front end of sleeve 3i is split and serves for accommodating a make-up stick 33. The sleeve 3| with the make-up stick 33. is moved forwards and back by turning the slotted sleeve 21 by means of the carriers are passed one through each of. these slots before the plate 38 is inserted in the sleeve 34. A holding plate 33 with three holes 40, accommodating the thickened rear ends 24 of the rods 2i, prevents the rod ends from shifting and the slide knobs i 2 from wabbling. The holding plate 39 is shown separately in Fig. 5.

The second stick carrier in is shown in position of rest in Fig. 1. Herein the web i3 of the slide knob is in its upper position 13' shown in Fig. 3, the guide slot i4 being completely covered by the sliding knob l2.

When it is desired to use the pencil, the stick carrier 3, for example, is shifted by means of its slide knob l2 into the position in which it is shown in Fig. 1. During this movement the web [3 slides along the oblique edge I! of the guide slot l4 into the notch widening i5 and bears against the shoulder IS in the position i3", at the same time compressing the spring 23. To ensure its sliding smoothly along the edge I! and on to the shoulder iii, the web i3 is of trapeziumshaped cross-section as shown in Fig. 3, and the shoulder i6 has an oblique edge. During this shifting moving the longitudinal ribs 30 come into engagement with the longitudinal grooves 3 in the case point. If the case point 5 is now turned, the ring 29 and therewith the slotted sleeve 21 will be turned, and the sleeve 3| with the lip stick 33 can be pushed forward so far that it projects from the case point and can be used, as shown in Fig. 1.

When the stick is no'longer required, the case point 5 is turned in the opposite direction relatively to the case i untilthe guide sleeve 3| carrying-the lip stick reaches its rearmost position and abuts against its guide. If the case point 5 is turned further in the same direction, the whole stick carrier 3 is rotated and the knob web l3 forced off the shoulder i6, whereupon the stick carrier 9 springs back into its retracted position of rest under the action of the spring 23. It is then possible to push forward another stick carrier.

Figs. 6 to 9 show a stick carrier of modified construction. Therein a slotted sleeve 42 with longitudinal slot 43 is rigidly connected with a blade spring 44. A small sleeve 45 for carrying a lip stick 46 is accommodated in the sleeve 42. A transverse pin 41 fixed in the sleeve 45 extends through the longitudinal slot 43 into a helical slot -48' in a sleeve 48 rotatable on the sleeve 42 and carrying at its front end a ring with slightly oblique helical longitudinal ribs 49. The blade spring 44 extends radially to the axis of the stick carrier (Figs. 6 and 7) and has an extension 58 (Fig. 7) carrying a tube 5! (Fig. 6) arranged laterally of the stick carrier and extending parallel thereto. A pressure spring 54 is mounted on a rod 53 accommodated in the tube 5| and having a thickened end 52. The rear end of this spring 54 bears against the tapered rear end of the tube 5!. The rod 53 projects from the rear end of the tube 5| and has a thick rear end 55 by which the rod is suspended in the case i. A- slide knob 51 is rigidly connected with the blade spring 44 by means of a web 56.

Fig. 10 shows the arrangement of three such stick carriers in the pencil case I. The advantage of this construction is, that thespace necessary for-accommodating the springs 54, does not detract from the length of the stick carrier, so that the entire length of this carrier can be used for accommodating the lip sticks. n the other hand, with a given lip-stick length the whole pencil in this construction can be made shorter than with stick carriers according to Fig. 1.

I claim:-

1. A multiple pencil especially for make-up sticks, comprising in combination an outer case having a plurality of longitudinal slots, a plurality of stick carriers in said case corresponding to the number of slots in said case, slide-knobs one connected with each of said carriers and each projecting through one of said slots and adapted to shift said carriers into and out of their position of use, a conical point rotatable on the front end of said case and having at least one longitudinal groove, each of said carriers comprising a rotatable part having a helical slot, at least one lateral projection arranged on the front end of said rotatable part and adapted to engage in said groove when its carrier is moved forward in said case to couple said rotary part with said conical point, a stick holder slidable in said carrier, a pin projecting radially from said holder through said helical slot, said pin adapted to slide in said helical slot during the rotation of said conical point and to shift said.

2. A multiple pencil as specified in claim 1, in which the front end of the rotary part of each stick carrier has a multiple screw thread with steep pitch and the conical case point has longitudinal grooves corresponding to the screw threads.

3. A multiple pencil as specified in claim 1, in which each of the slots in the pencil case is widened laterally at its front end forming a shoulder adapted to engage the slide knob and secure the corresponding stick carrier in its forward position, the rotatable part of the stick carrier having at its rear end an abutment adapted to check the rearward movement of the stick holder, said rotatable conical point adapted to disengage said knob from said shoulder when said stick holder is in its rearmost position.

4. A multiple pencil as specified in claim 1, in which the slide knob of eachstick carrier 'is sufliciently long to entirely cover its slot in the case when the stick carrier is in its position of rest, and each stick carrier is connected with its slide knob by a blade spring adapted to cover the inner side of its slot when the stick carrier is in its position for use.

A multiple pencil as specified in claim 1, in which each stick carrier is connected with a tubular sleeve arranged at its side, said sleeve accommodating a return spring.

6. In a multiple pencil as specified in claim 1, a blade spring projecting radially from the rear end of each stick carrier and carrying the slide knob, a tubular sleeve mounted on said spring and, extending parallel to said stick carrier, and a return spring accommodated in said tubular sleeve.

'7. In a multiple pencil as specified in claim 1, a blade spring projecting radially from the rear end of each stick carrier and carrying the slide knob, a tubular sleeve mounted on said spring and extending parallel to said stick carrier, and a return spring accommodated in said tubular sleeve, a supporting plate fitted in the rear end of the pencil case and having a plurality of slots corresponding to the number of stick carriers, a rod extending intosaid stick carrier and carrying said spring, a thickened rear end on said rod engaging one of said slots and supporting its stick carrier on said plate, and a holding plate on the rear side of said plate and having holes registering with said slots, the thickened rear end on each of said rods engaging in one of said holes to maintain said stick carriers in position.

8. In a magazine pencil of the multi-lead type having a plurality of lead carriers, lead adjusting mechanism associated with each of said lead carriers for causing movement of the lead relatively to its lead carrier, a casing in which said lead carriers are mounted so that each is movable independently of the other carriers into a position in which it protrudes from the casing, movable means on the casing adapted to interlock with the lead adjusting mechanism on each lead carrier, whereby movement of said movable means on the casing when it is interlocked with said lead-adjusting mechanism of a carrier, will cause the lead to move relatively to its carrier.

9. In a magazine pencil of the multi-pencil type having a plurality of lead carriers, lead adjusting mechanism associated with each of said lead carriers for causing movement of the lead relatively to said lead carrier, a casing in which said lead carriers are mounted so that each is movable independently of the other carriers into position in which it protrudes from the casing, movable means on the casing adapted to interlock with the lead adjusting mechanism of each lead carrier, whereby movement of said movable means on the casing when it is interlocked with said lead adjusting mechanism of a carrier will cause the lead to move relatively to said carrier, said interlocking of said movable means with the lead adjusting mechanism being effected by projections in said means adapted to fit into depressions in said mechanism.

10. A multiple pencil comprising in combination an outer case having a plurality of longiand adapted to engage in said groove when its carrier is moved forward in said case to couple said rotary part with said conical point, means for actuating the writing point slidable in said carrier, a pin projecting radially from said actuating means through said helical slot, said pin adapted to slide in said helical slot to thereby shift said actuating means forward and backwards in said rotary part.
