narra srarres iseaass SAFETY RAZOR. Y
VAppncatimfi filed December 13, 1921. serial No. 522,110.
T all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MACE L. MASTERS, a.
citizen of the United States, and a resident of Mount Ulla, in the county of Rowan and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and Improved Safety Razor, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements inV safety razors, an object of the invention being to provide va safety razor in which'the handle forms, a continuation. of the guard and is .located in the .same plane with the.V
guard so thatthe razor may be handled with facility in shaving all parts ofthe face.
A further [object is to provide a novel Afmeans'for supporting a blade, and to prof VFigure 4 is proved razor videV a razor which will be simple and practical in construction, comprising a minimum number of parts, yet ywhich will be strong, durable and efcient in use, neat and attractive in appearance,easy to clean, andl comparatively inexpensive to manufacture. With these and other objects inview, the invention consists `in certain novel features of construction andV combinations and arrangements of parts as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims. Y
VIn the accompanying drawings: f Figure 1 is a top plan View of my im- Figure 2 is a view in longitudinal section therethrough on the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view of thev razor; f Y
a view .in transverse Ysection on the line 4 4 of Figure 3; andv o Figure nis a lsimilar view illustrating a modication.
Referring in. detail tothe drawings, I have used the reference numeral 1 to designate the handle of my improved razor. The handle, it will be noted, is in -skeleton form and includes a pair of laterally extending finger receiving portions such as 2. This handle may, if desired, be made solid instead of in the skeleton form shown and may be decorated in any approved manner, as is customary in the art. A guard 3 forms a continuation of the handle, the guard of course being appreciably wider than the handle and being transverselybowed. Relatively narrow guard fingers 4 are provided at the edge of the guard and on the under face of the guard, a pair of longitudinally extending parallel ribs 5 areintegral with the inner ends of the guard fingers. The guard is formed with three openings 6 in its. intermediate portion spaced kequal distances apart. Y Y
ThroughoutV a portion of their lengtlrthe ribs 5 are formed with opposed grooves such as 7 therein, and a wedge 8 is slidable in the grooves. This wedge is limited inone direction by engagement with the ends of the grooves 7 and in the other direction by a stop Vfixed to the handle adjacent'the guard. The wedge member'8 is formed at its working end with a recess such as 10 providing a pair ofarms 11. The wedge is likewise formed with'a slot 12 adapted to register with one Yof the openings 6 in the guardand opposite its recessed end is provided with an angular thumb-receiving eX- tension 13 for operatin'g'the same.
I have indicated.y a conventional type of razor'blade 14. The blade shown is flexible Y and is providedwith the usual three openings 14 therein. A bowed backing plate 15 carries three studs such as 16 :which areV accommodated in the openings in the blade. The central stud 16 preferably includes a socket 17 and a headed screw 18 in the socket so that this ystudcmay be' adjustable and the head movable for the purpose of exerting the desired tension on the blade.
- The operation of the device is as follows f The blade 141s mounted upon the backing plate 15, the studs 16 passing through the.
openings'14 in the blade. V'The studs 16 are Y then passed through the openings 6 in the guard, oney of lthe studs( atV thesame timegextending through the slot 12 in the wedge 8. It is Vmerely necessary to slide the `wedge forward so that thearms 11 straddle and enga-ge under the head of the screw 18, lockingthe bladeand backing plate infplace. The device isthenready for shaving. After use it may be disassembled by merely pulling the wedge member back and allowing the blade and backing plate to fall off. yIt should be noted that while I have shown the screw 18 inconnection with the central stud 16 that I do not wish to be limited to the use of this screw, since a solid stud having groovesV therein would serve substantially the same purpose. The screw merely permits a somewhat finer adjustment of tension on the blade.
In Figure 5, Ihave illustrated a modification wherein the wedge 8 is done away with.
In this form of the device, 19 represents the guard,g20: the blade, andQl the backing plate. Instead of using the Wedge member, a central threaded stud or post 22 is provided on the backing plate Which passesthrough the aligned openings in the blade,
.n myself at liberty to, make such changes andA alterations as 'fairly fall v vithin the spirit and scopeof the appended claims.
