ATTORNEY Patented Sept. 25, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,569,060 I r I I i 7' Huber 0. Hughes, Sapulpa, Okla.
Application March 24, 1950, Serial N 0. 151,669
3 Claims. 1
The invention relates to figured swings, and has for its object to provide a device of this kind simulating a galloping horse, and comprising a body portion and a head portion formed rigidly with the front legs of the figure, and hingedly connected to the forward end of the body portion, said combined head and body portion having a three point suspension to an overhead support, and handle and foot rest members carried by the head portion and forming means whereby the head portion can be oscillated for causing a swinging action of the figure as a whole on the three point suspension, thereby simulating a galloping operation of a horse.
A further object is to provide the upper portion of the head member with a handle extending outwardly from opposite sides of the head member and connected to flexible cables carried by an overhead support. Also to provide the rear end of the body portion with a cross-bar extending to opposite sides of the body portion, and having the ends of the bar connected to downwardly extending flexible members leading to a cross-bar, which is in turn connected to a flexible member leading to an overhead support.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the figured swing, showing, in dotted lines, the various positions of the parts at the ends of the oscillations thereof.
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1 but showing the oscillations of the head part at the starting of the swinging movement.
Figure 3 is a front elevation of the swing and its suspension.
Figure 4 is a side elevation of the swing and its suspension.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral I designates the body of the animal, which for purposes of illustration is shown as a horse, however this may be varied as desired.
The body I is provided with a seat 2 adapted to be occupied by the user with one foot on each side. Hingedly connected at 3 to the forward end of the body portion is a head section 4, which section is formed integral or rigid with the leg sections 5 so the entire head section will pivotally rock on the hinging point 3 incident to the oscillation of the head section by the operator grasping the handle member 6 with both hands, one on each side of the head section, and simultaneously placing the feet on the foot'rests 1, carried by the lower end of the legs 5 for alternately applying pressure on the head section to cause a rocking operation of the head section in relation to the body. This initial starting is shown in full and dotted lines in Figure 2. After the swing picks up its momentum, the movement is as shown in Figure 1, therefore it will be seen that a substantial galloping operation is simulated.
Disposed above the swing is a transverse support 8, which support is stationary, and clamped to said support, by means of a clamp 9, is a forwardly and rearwardly extending bar [0, substantially in the plane of the figure. The forward end of the bar It) is provided with a transverse bar II, to the ends of which bar, are connected at l2, downwardly extending flexible members [3. The lower ends of the flexible members l3 are anchored at M to the ends of the handle member 6, clearly shown in Figure 3. Connected at I5 to the rear end of the bar I0 is a downwardly extending flexible member l6, which member is relatively short in relation to the flexible members I3, and is substantially in the plane of the figure. The lower end of flex ible member I6 is anchored at H to a transverse bar I8 substantially centrally of said bar I8, and connected at H) to the end of the transverse bar I8 are downwardly extending flexible members 20, the lower ends of which members 20 are anchored at 2| to the transversely disposed supporting bar 22 extending through the rear end of the body I. It will be noted that there is a three point support on the cables from the stationary supports Ill and 8 which will limit the side swing of the figure during a swinging operation when the operator, occupying the seat 2, alternately applies push and pull pressures on the foot rest 1 and handle member 6.
From the above it will be seen that a swing is provided whereby moveable parts of a figure will simulate the action of an actual figure, galloping or running, and it will also be seen that there is a three-point suspension which will reduce swaying or side tilting of the figure to a minimum, so the head portion can be easily oscillated by the operator with the hands and feet.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is:
1. A figured swing comprising a body portion, a seat carried by said body portion, a head portion hingediy mounted on the forward end of the body portion, rigidly connected downwardly extending leg portions carried by the head portion and rockable with the head portion, a stationary support above said figured member, a handle member extending through the head portion to opposite sides thereof, flexible supports connected to the outer ends of the handle member and to the stationary support, a transverse bar extending through the rear end of the body portion and terminating spaced therefrom, a flexible member 569,066 i ii Z 1 T 4 lower ends of the legs and forming means in combination with the handle member of the head portion whereby said head section may be rocked on its hinging point for imparting oscillation to the figure as a whole on the flexible members.
3. A device as set forth in claim 1 wherein the forward end of the body member is hingedly portions carriedby the head section.
