2 Claims. (01; 30-255) This invention relates to an improvement in scissors, which consist of two cutting blades pivotally connected between their ends, and having a finger engaging loop at one end of each blade. With the present invention, when the scissors are not in use, they are opened to their full extent, with the blades side by side, and the pointed ends of the blades at the inner end portions of the finger loops. With my invention, a simple, novel, easily actuated holding or latching means is supplied to engage with the outer free pointed end of one of the scissor blades, to releasably hold them in wide open position, in which position the points are guarded, and the cutting edges of the blades are also guarded by the bodies of the other blades alongside, so that the scissors may be carried in a pocket, bag or otherwise as may be desired, without danger of injury to anyone or to any fabric or other material with which they may come in contact; and with the completely open scissors having the finger loops and blades in longitudinal aligmnent.
It is a primary purpose of the present invention to provide a novel, very economical, simple and efiective releasable holding means for securing the scissors in wide open position for carrying when not in use, the scissors being readily released for use whenever wanted.
An understanding of the invention may be had from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which,
Fig. 1 is an elevation of the scissors in completely open position and held in such position when not in use.
Fig. 2 is an edge elevation of the scissors shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an elevation similar as shown in Fig. 1, with the scissors released for use, and
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary enlarged longitudinal section, substantially on the plane of line 4--4 of Fig. 2.
Like reference characters refer to like parts in the different figures of the drawing.
The scissors of conventional structure, include two blades 1 each at one end having a finger receiving or passing loop 2, generally of an open oval form. The two blades cross each other and are pivotally connected between their ends as at 3, the cutting edges of the blades extending from their pivotal connections to the outer free pointed ends of such blades, the finger loops 2 being at the opposite ends of the blades. At the juncture of a blade with its finger loop 2 in the structure shown, there is an onset shoulder 4 which when the scissors are at fully open position are directly at the pointed ends of the blades as shown in Fig. 2, serving as guards therefor.
A slot 5 is cut at one of the said shoulders between opposite sides of its associated loop 2, in which a spring detent or holding latch B is located. Said spring latch comprises a length of spring material permanently fastened, as by rivet I or equivalent securing means, near one end at the outer side of the adjacent finger loop 2. It passes through the slot 5, and between its ends, in the slot, is formed with an outwardly extending detent 8 providing a point receiving recess into which the free pointed end of the blade I coming to it seats. Said spring latching member 6, at its free end, extends beyond the slot 5 terminating in a section 9 which is accessible for bending or straining the latch toward the adjacent finger loop 2 for disengagement of the latch and scissors blade.
When the scissors are opened to fully open position, as in Figs. 1 and 2, the pointed end of the blade which is associated with latch 9 comes to it and rides over it until it is received in the holding recess at the detent B. When thus held, the scissor blades are maintained against movement until the latch is released. The preferred release of the latch is by pressing against the terminal section 9 of the latch, though b the exertion of force on the finger loops 2 to move them toward each other, a release may be obtained. In such open position and held therein, the pointed ends of the blades are guarded and the cut ting edges thereof are back of the adjacent edges of the sections of the blades between the pivot 3 and the finger loops 2. The scissors may be carried without providing a case or covering for them, in a pocket, hand-bag or otherwise and are instantly released for use when use is wanted.
The invention is very practical and useful. The claims appended hereto define the invention, which is to be considered comprehensive of all forms of structure coming within their scope.
Iclaim:
1. In a scissors having two blades crossing each other between their ends, the blades being pivotally connected at their point of crossing, each blade being pointed at one end and having a finger engaging member at its opposite end, said finger engaging members having greater thickness than the blades and off-set to one side each of its respective blade, and each finger receiving member at its inner end having a slot therein in said off-set portion, and a yielding spring latch member located in a slot and secured against the adjacent inner end of one of said finger engaging member in the path of movement of the pointed end of the opposite blade, when said blades are moved about their pivotal connections to fully open position to lie alongside each other, the pointed end of said opposite blade engaging with said latch member and entering said slot to engage therewith.
2. In a scissors having two blades crossing each other between the ends thereof, and pivotally connected together at their point of crossing, each of said blades having a pointed end and a finger engaging member at the opposite end, said finger engaging member having a connection to said blade including a shoulder portion of greater thickness than the thickness of the blade, said shoulder portion being slotted'b'et'vveen opposite sides, with one side of said slot in the same plane as a side of its associated blade, the point of the other blade being adapted to enter said slot when the blades are moved to fully open position, in
