This invention relates to pocket knives, and has particular reference to providing pocket knives with exterior spring holding means or clips whereby the knives may be securely clipped to pockets, etc.
The main object of the invention is to provide a simple, durable and inexpensive means of attaching a holding clip to a knife. Other objects of the invention will appear in the hereinafter following description of an illustrative form in which the invention may be embodied.
To the attainment of the objects and advantages referred to, the invention resides in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement illustrated or disclosed in the accompanying drawings and specification.
In the drawings Fig. 1 is a side view of a pocket knife provided with a holding clip in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view on a larger scale of one end of the pocket knife partly in section.
Referring to the drawings in detail it will be understood that the invention is applicable to various forms and types of pocket knives. the one specifically illustrated comprising a handle 10 provided with the usual longitudinal groove 11 for the *eception of one or more knife blades 12. Each blade 12 is formed at one end with the usual tang 18 having a transverse aperture 141 by means of which it is pivotally mounted upon a holding rivet or stud 15. This rivet or stud 15 extends entirely through the handle, and by reason of its mounting thereon the blade 12 is swingable into and out of the groove 11. A back spring 16 is associated with the handle 10 and acts upon the tang 13 of each blade as usual to retain the same in selected positions.
The spring clip to be described may be attached to the knife in the following manner.
1930. Serial No. 447,578.
cent the end piece 10 of the knife handle, 7
said clip having an enlarged or substantially flattened base portion 20. The base portion 20 of the clip is provided with a transverse aperture 21 for the reception of attaching means, namely, in the illustrated form, one end of an interior pin or wire" or rivet 22 which extends through the tubular rivet 15, and the interior in has itsopposite ends headed or clinched so as to be permanently secured. The body of the holding clip 19 is slightly ofiset as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3, and is provided witha spherical enlargement 23 on its free end which is adapted to exert a slight clamping pressure toward the handle to retain the same in the material of a pocket. This free end of the clip extends toward the middle portion of the handle.
Means are provided to prevent swinging of the holding clip 19 about the pivot stud. For this purpose the illustrated embodiment includes a short pin or projection 25 which is secured in the holding clip 19 at a point removed from the pin 2-2, preferably nearer to the knife middle, extending inwardly to engage with a snug fit in a recess 26 formed in the adjacent portion of the handlelO. Such pin and recess device prevents lateral movement of the holding clip so that it is maintained tightly in its proper relation to the handle of the knife.
By using a tubular holding rivet 15 as above described, the knife handle, back spring and blade may be initially assembled together in the usual way, and the spring holding clip may subsequently be applied in a separate operation and without any likelihood of injury to the knife handle in clinching the ends of the interior pin22. The invention is however susceptible of numerous modifications. For example instead of employing a tubular holding rivet and an inner rivet pin, the holding rivet may be solid, and provided otherwise with an outstanding extension or pin to engage within the aperture 21 of the clip 19.
It will thus be seen that there has been described a pocket knife embodying the principles and attaining the objects of the present invention. Since certain matters of combination, arrangement and structure may be variously modified without departing from the the principles of the invention it is not intended to limit the invention to such matters except so far as specified in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A pocket knife having the grooved hans dle, blade swinging into and from such groove, back spring acting upon the tang of the blade, and combined holding rivet and lade pivot member near the end of the hanthrough the perforation in said holding member, and clinched at its ends to secure the end of the holding member, and a projection at the inner side of the holding member slightly removed from said perforation, for preventing swinging of the holding member, and the handle formed with a recess for receiving said projection. v

dle; and characterized by an exterior spring holding clip with its base secured near the handle end and its free end extending toward the handle middle, an extension concentric with the blade pivot rigidly securing the clip base to the handle end, and means connecting the handle and clip at a point removed from such extension and preventing swinging of the clip.
2. A pocket knife having the grooved handle, blade swinging into and from such groove, back spring acting upon the tang of the blade, and combined holding rivet and blade pivot member near the end of the handle; and characterized by an exterior holding clip adapted to engage a pocket, arranged longitudinally with its base secured near the handle end and its free end extending toward the handle middle, the blade pivot member being tubular, and an interior pin extending from the clip base through the tubular pivot for rigidly securing the clip base to the handle end, and a pin and recess device connecting the handle and clip at a point removed flrom such pin for preventing swinging of the 0 1p.
3. A pocket knife having a grooved handle, blade swinging into and from such groove, back spring acting upon the tang of the blade, and combined holding rivet and blade pivot stud near the end of the handle; characterized in that the said stud is tubular, and that the knife is provided with a longitudinal resilient holding member along one end of the handle and having a perforation in line with the passage in said stud, a rivet pin extending clear through said stud and
