Another advantage of this construction is that the abutting joint 21 formed at the free end of the lug 2| and the bottom of the recess 24 is set back from and thus is out of alignment with the edge 11 of the longitudinal slot l8. Thus should the forming dies become worn so that the end of the lug and the bottom of the recess are not properly seated, or if the joint should be slightly opened, there is no chance of the edge of the protective paper strip entering or being caught in this joint, as would be the case if it were in alignment with the edge I! of the slot. This prevents the paper the lug 2i and seats in beyond the center line 3| of the slot I 8, as shown in Fig. 5 and indicated by the distance 32, is the same as the length of the lug 22 on the opposite side of the centerline 3| as indicated by the distance 33. This is important in making the last bending or forming operation to complete the circular shape of the core in the forming dies as' shown in Fig. 8 (in which the partially formed blank is shown at 35 and the upper and lower from the other edge and seated at its free end in the recess, said latter edge being provided with a recess on the outer side of the lug extending backwardly from the second edge of the slot, and a lug on the first edge located at the outer side of the first lug in the latter recess and projecting at its free end with this recess beyond the second edge of the slot an amount substantially equal to the depth of the first recess.

A metal spool for camera film and the like comprising a tubular sheet metal core, and flanges attached to the ends of the core, said core comprisin a sheet metal member bent into tubular form and having interlocked edges, said edges having at each end of the core outer and inner lugs side by side extending in opposite directions and each edge being provided with a recess dies at 36 and 31 respectively), because it makes,
the amount of metal on opposite sides of the center line 34, corresponding to the center line 3|, equal, so that the forces of the die in the bending operation are equal on opposite sides of this center line and there is therefore no tendency to force one side oil the center. This greatly facilitates the operation of getting the edges to come properly together. Where they are not even, difficulty is experienced in this respect. Also, as pointed out above, it secures a double locking effect of the abutting edges at each edge of the core against torsion and twist or relative of the joint opening up. In other words, as it is locked and supported in both directions at both ends of the core, even if the lock is lost at one end there is a lockin eifect in both directions at the other end.
Having thus set forth the nature of my inven-' tion, I claim:
1. A metal spool for camera film and the like comprising a central barrel portion and end flanges secured to the ends of the barrel portion, said barrel portion being provided with a longitudinal slot terminating at its opposite ends spaced from the ends of. this portion, the end portions beyond the slot includin a longitudinal joint comprising abutting edges, one edge adjacent the end of the slot being recessed backwardly from the edge of this slot, a lug projecting o posite to and receiving the end of each lug on the other edge, the edges between the inner lugs being spaced to form a longitudinal slot in the core, and the bottom edge of each recess for both the inner and outer lugs being set back from the edge of the slot on that side of the slot whereby the inner lugs are each held by abutments on opposite sides of this lug against longitudinal movement in either direction. 7

A spool for camera film and the like comprising a metal core and flanges attached to the core, said core comprising a sheet metal member bent to tubular form and having opposed edges abutting at the opposite end portions of the core and spaced apart between said abutting end portions to provide a longitudinal slot, the edgesof said abutting end portions including an inner and an outer. lug projecting forwardly from the respective edges of the slot and lying side by side, and each edge including a, recess opposite to and in which the free end of each lug on the opposite edge portion is seated and with the inner edgeof each recess spaced backwardly substantially'the same amount from the edge of the slot on the side on which the recess is located.
