My invention refers to sanitary pads for the comfort of the invalid, and also for protection of bedding equipment.

The object of my invention is to provide a cushion pad having a sponge rubber dish basin for comfort, the same being mounted upon a waterproof sheet and protected by a similar cover sheet, each of which is adhesively secured to the dished base.

This permanent pad unit may be, conveniently positioned upon a sheet covered mattress for indefinite use, and it is protected by a Sanitary soft removable cover piece of the Denison type, which is inserted over the cushion unit for removal and replacement from time to time, which cover piece is a composite absorbent layer that is destroyed, after use.

The removable Denison cover piece comprises soluble paper sectionshaving interposed therebetween a layer of cellular cotton and may be purchased in the open market.

A further object of my invention is to provide a drain tube coupling unit for the pad, whereby fluid in the dished basin is drained off.

With the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter described, and more particularly defined by the appended claim, it being understood that such changes in the precise embodiment of the herein disclosed invention may be made as come within the scope of the claim.

In the accompanying drawings is illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of the present invention constructed according to the best mode so far devised for the practical application of the principles thereof.

Figure 1 represents a plan view of a pad embodying the features of my invention.

Figure 2 is a cross section of the same, the secvtion being indicated by line 2-2 of Figure 1.

Referring by characters to the drawings, l indicates a sponge rubber basin, the upper face of which is dished for convenience and comfort of the patient that may be seated thereon.

The sponge rubber basin has secured thereto a thin rubber sheet 2, which sheet extends beyond the circular edge of the basin. A similar rubber sheet 3 is nested over the dished mouth of the sponge rubber basin, and both of said sheets are adhesively secured to said basin, it being understood that the upper sheet 3 is also provided with a rim portion 3' loosely folded over and downwardly from the mouth of the basin, the same being lapped upon the margin of sheet 3 to fully encase said basin.

It should be understood that the waterproof sheets 2 and 3 of the drawings, owing to the fabrication, will not wrinkle, which is an important feature in my invention.

In order to provide means for draining off fluid from the dished basin, the same is formed with a channel 4 having a flexible coupling tube unit 4' secured therein and extending outwardly from the rim of the basin, as shown. The coupling unit is adapted to receive the end of a flexible rubber tube 5, which tube may be trained over the bed into a proper receptacle, not shown, whereby drainage is collected.

The above described soft pad may be indefinitely used, whereby the sheets or covering of the bed are protected against soiling, while at the same time, said pad serves as a soft cushion upon which the patient may comfortably rest, and due to this fact, the patient is not only relieved of bed strain or pressure, but also by the use of it, the patient is freed from usual bed sores.

This unit is particularly adapted for use in hospitals or homes where sickness occurs, and under ordinary conditions the bedding in such homes are readily soiled and rendered unsanitary unless they are replaced constantly.

The basin pad is protected by a composite paper absorbent cover piece comprising an inner paper layer 6 and an outer paper layer 6' having interposed therebetween a cellular cotton filler l, the outer paper layer 6' being preferably perforated to insure absorption of fluid that may be discharged thereon or that may result from washing the patient.

As shown in the drawings, the absorbent coverpiece is simply loosely laid over the cushion basin with its loose edges folded about the same, whereby when the patient rests thereon, it will sag down into the dished mouth of the basin to conform thereto. By the above provision of a cover piece, the same may be frequently removed and replaced, and the bath is thus completed in a thoroughly sanitary condition, while at the same time, free movement of said patient will result without discomfort.

From the foregoing description, it will be apparent that the sheeting or covers of the bed will remain sanitary and clean for an indefinite period, and the bath under all conditions will be comfortable.

I claim:

In a new article of manufacture a sanitary bed ture communicating with the drain tube, said 5 sheet having its margin extending beyond the side wall of the basin, and a waterproof bottom sheet secured to the lower surface of the basin end having its margin extending beyond the basin.
