' C. JENKINS.
. TRUNK-HANDLE. v .N'o.256,699.? I Patented Apr.18,l882.
F1 9,1; Jew/test: j I Invental Y UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES JENKINS, 0F S'F; LoUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO THE HIGKMAN TRUNK MANUFACTURING COMPANY, oF SAME PLACE.
TRUNK-HANDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 256,699, dated April 18, 1882. Application filed February 23, 1882. (No model.)
' out, so as to furnish a loop for the grasp of the hand.
My improvement consists in the combination of a metal cap attached to each end of a leather handle and plates or frames attached to the trunk at each end of the handle, having an aperture in which the metal cap works and a stap e or keeper overlying the strap and forming the abutment against which the cap bears when the handle is in use.
Figure 1 is an outside iew. Fig. 2 is a section on line'2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an inside view. Fig. 4 is a section on line 1 4, Fig. 1.
A represents the leather handle, to each end of which is secured a cap, I), by a rivet, b.
The caps have marginal flanges b, which are turned down from their bodies to form cups to receive the ends of the handle-the depths of 3 the cups being equal to the thickness of the ends of the strap or handle. The handle is secured to the tru=.k by brackets O, havingloops c, to receive the handle and allow it to slide back and forth, as stated. The loops prevent 35 the caps from being withdrawn from the brackets. The brackets are cup-shaped to receive the caps, as shown.
This device gives me a cheap, Well-appearing, and strong handle.
011 cheap trunks the brackets, secured to the trunk, would consist of the loops 0, as the body of the brackets do not give strength, but only appearance to the device.
I claim as my invention The handle A, having flanged caps 13 B, in combination with brackets (J 0, having loops c, forming abutments against which the caps bear, as set forth.
CHARLES JENKINS.
