Description
Aug. 28, 1951 E. G. ST. GERMAIN SEWING BOX Filed April 27, 1950 Patented Aug. 28, 1951 UNITED .OIFl-CE 3 Claims.
This invention relates to a sewing box.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a sewing box which has a large storage space, easy access to thread, needles and pins, and wherein the thread spools are carried upon the cover and likewise a cushion for pins and needles are similarly carried on the cover and adapted to be adjusted to a closed position to prevent the entanglement of clothes therewith when the cover is down.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide a sewing box which is of simple construction, inexpensive to manufacture, has a minimum number of parts, is convenient to use, has a sturdy, long life, and is efficient in operation.
For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the sewing box with the cover elevated to show the arrangement of the spool supports upon the cover.
Fig. 2 is an end elevational view of the box with portions of the same broken away to show the arrangement of the parts within the box when the cover is in the closed position.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of the box looking upon the front side thereof and upon the strap for holding the pins and needles.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary transverse sectional view of the needle and pin pad lowered to provide access to the pins and needles.
Referring now to the figures, H1 represents the main part of the box which is open at the top and which has a bottom II with side walls extending therearound. Connected over the box opening and to one of the side walls by means of hinges I2 is a cover 83. This cover l3 has latch elements [4 adapted to cooperate with elements IS on the main part of the box, when the cover [3 is lowered to the closing position. A chain l6 retains the cover in the elevated position and inclined slightly rearwardly of the rear side wall.
On the side wall opposite to the side wall which hinges the cover, there is provided a strap i! that serves to retain in an upright position packages of pins H3 and needles l9 and the like items. The strap is formed of rubber and can be expanded to accommodate the different number of items.
Fixed to the inner face of the cover is a horizontally extending plate 2! which has a p i y of laterally spaced pins 22 for receiving spools 23 of thread. Several spools can be placed on one pin 22.
Under the plate 2| there is pivoted at 25 a metal piece 26 of angular section having, when raised, a horizontal portion 2'! and a vertically extending portion 28. The horizontally extending portion, when raised, contains a pin cushion 29. The vertical portion 28 is adapted to be retained by a ball detent 3| projecting on the under face of horizontal plate 2|.
When access is desired to the pin cushion 29, the member 26 is dropped to the position shown in Fig. 4. When it is raised to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 4, the contents of the box I0 will be kept free of the pins and needles in the cushions. Slight pressure upon the member 26 will free the same from the detent 3 I.
On the top of the cover is an adjustable handle strap 32 held between guides 33 and 34. This strap will lie in a flat position when not in use and can be elevated to the dot and dash lines when to be used to serve to carry the sewing box by the hand.
It should now be apparent that there has been provided a sewing box which has large storage space, has easy access to thread, needle and pins, and, due to its wood construction is more sturdy than prior boxes now on the market. The caselike construction makes it eas to carry.
While various changes may be made in the construction details, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus set forth and disclosed the nature of my invention, what is claimed is:
1. A sewing box comprising a main box part, a cover hinged to one side of the main box part, a horizontally extending plate secured to the inner face of the cover and a plurality of long pins extending from the plate and adapted to receive spools of thread, and a member hinged to the under face of the cover parallel to the pin plate, said member being of angle section and means for holding the same upon the plate when elevated, said member carrying a pin cushion whereby the pin cushion can be rendered inaccessible and free of the contents of the box when the cover is closed.
2. A sewing box construction comprising a main box part, a cover hinged to the box part, a horizontal plate fixed in an edgewise manner to the under face of the cover and adapted to extend horizontally when the cover is elevated, a member of angle section hinged to the inner face of the cover, pin cushion means carried upon the member, said plate having a ball detent and said ball detent adapted to retain the angle member in its elevated position whereby to render the pins of the pin cushion free of the contents of the box when the cover is closed.
3. A sewing box construction comprising a main box part, a cover hinged to the box part, a horizontal plat-e fixed in an edgewise manner to the under face of the cover and adapted to extend horizontally when the cover is elevated, a member of angle section hinged to the inner face of the cover, pin cushion means carried upon the member, said plate having a ball detent and said ball detent adapted to retain the angle member in its elevated position whereby to render the pins of the pin cushion free of the contents of. the box when the cover is closed, and a series of I long pins connected to the horizontally extending plate and adapted to receive and retain spools of thread, said pins being extended from the plate to a location near the side of the box whereby to prevent, when the cover is lowered, the disengagement of the spools from the ends of the pins.
