The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in work boxes and more particularly to sewing `boxes for holding the supplies and equipment used in household sewing work.

It is an object of the present invention to provide a sewing box having means for the orderly disposition therein of sewing supplies and equipment, and especially to provide means for storing spools of thread within the box in such a manner that they will not co-mingle in disorderly fashion with the other contents of the box.

A further object of the invention is to provide a sewing box having means for rendering conveniently available, when the box is open, the spools of thread which are stored therein.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a rack attached to the inside of the lid of the sewing box and including pivoted shelves on which pegs are mounted for receiving the spools of thread together with means for securing the shelves in a position to prevent displacement of the spools therefrom when the lid is closed and for moving the shelves into a position for conveniently removing the spools therefrom when the lid is open.

A still further object is to provide a device of this character olf simple and practical construction, which is neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.

Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, andtin which- Figure l is a perspective view showing the lid of the work box in open position.

Figure 2 is a fragmentary sectional view showing the lid in partly open position.

Figure 3 is a side elevational View showing the lid in fully open position.

Figure 4 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view showing one of the hinged shelves, and

Figure 5 is a side elevational view showing the lid in closed position and with parts broken away and shown in section.

Referring now to the drawings in detail wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates a box of a type adapted for holding sewing material and equipment and to one edge of which a lid 6 is hingedly attached.

A pair of angle iron frame members 'II are secured to the underside of the lid adjacent the side edges thereof and to one of said frame members is attached a sectional hinged brace 8 for securing the lid in its open position, the lid being swingable rearwardly beyond the vertical plane of the rear Wall of the box as will be apparent from an inspection of Figure 3 of the drawings.

A plurality of horizontally extending vertically spaced shelves 9 are fixedly attached at their ends to the frame members I and spaced below each of the shelves 9 is a hingedly connected shelf I0 attached at its ends to each of the frame members 1 by the pins II.

A rod I2 connects one end of each of the hinged shelves I0 for uniform pivotal movement, the upper end of the rod I2 having a coil spring I3 attached thereto and connected to the uppermost stationary shelf S to yieldably urge the hinged shelves upwardly and in a direction toward its adjacent upper stationary shelf 9.

A chain I4 is attached at one end to the lower end of the rod I2 and is connected at its other end to the inside of the box 5 and of a length adapted to swing the shelves I 0 downwardly away from their adjacent upper stationary shelves 9 during the opening movement of the lid and after the lid passes rearwardly beyond the vertical plane of the rear wall of the box.

A plurality of pegs I5 rise upwardly from each of the hinged shelves I0 and upon which spools of thread I6 are adapted to be mounted.

The upper ends of the pegs I5 terminate slightly below the adjacent upper stationary shelves 9 when the lid is closed, or in partly open position as will be apparent from an inspection of Figure 2 of the drawings, the shelves I0 and pegs |15 being held in such position by the coil spring I3.

When the lid 6 is opened backwardly beyond the vertical plane of the rear wall of the box into the position as shown in Figure 3 of the drawings the chain I4 will pull the rod I2 and hinged shelves Ill downwardly so that the hinged shelves will occupy a position substantially at a 45 degree angle with respect to their adjacent upper stationary shelves 9 whereby the pegs I5 will be inclined forwardly and facilitate removal of the spools I from the pegs.

Accordingly, when the lid is closed the shelves 9 and l will occupy substantially a parallel .position as indicated in Figure 5 of the drawings and with the ends of the pegs I5 positioned in substantially close relation with respect to the stationary shelves 9 so that displacement of the spools I6 from the pegs is impossible.

In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary. l

It is to' be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown anddescribed a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully compre-` hendd by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claim.

Having described the invention,'what is claimed is: v

A sewing box including a hinged lid, a pair of strips secured to the inside of the lid adjacent the side edges thereof, a plurality of shelves fixedly Y 10 means normally maintaining the hinged shelves in a position with the pegs in close relation to an Y adjacent fixed shelf when the lid is closed, and a flexible member connecting the rod to the box for movingV the -pegs away from the fixed shelves 1,5 upon an opening movement of the lid.
