Whilst the improvements of the present invention are generally applicable to gas burner installations operating on a mixture of air and a combustible gas, the improvements are particularly applicable to burners for the heating of ovens such as biscuit baking ovens, enamelling ovens and the like installations.
Where an oven or other chamber is heated by a number of gas burners, it often happens that one may become extinguished, or again it may be put out of action in order to out down the total heating in the oven or to inspect or change a burner, and under such conditions it may occur that products of combustion pass back along the air or gas feed. pipes and cause a choking or corrosion of gas or air filters in the pipe lines, or, in the case of an air supply at a pressure above the pressure in the oven, air may be fed to the oven when that burner is out of action, which results it is desirable to avoid.
According to the present invention separate valves are provided at the outlet ends of gas and air supply pipes, the valves being controlled by a common operating means.
Such an arrangement will allow for the closing off of the gas and air supply pipes respectively by the operation of a single control ele ment and will further allow the shutting off of these pipes in such cases where it is desirable to detach a burner nozzle for inspection or replacement.
The invention will be further described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a gas supply arrangement constructed in accordance with the invention,
Fig. 2 is a plan view of part of the arrangement of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 22 of Fi 1;
Fig. 4 is a, section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1,
Figs. 3 and 4 are drawn on a somewhat smaller scale than Figs. 1 and 2.
A front plate or casting II is adapted to be secured to the outer wall l2 of a double walled oven by bolts 13 and a sealing flange lid.
A cylindrical spacing element l4 extends between the outer oven wall 12 and an inner Wall l5 and carries joint rings l6 and I! for connection with said walls.
A burner tube l8 has a reduced external diameter end portion 18a adapted to locate in a bore in plate H. A series of radial bores (not 1 Claim. (Cl. 158'?) shown) provide burner orifices on the portion of tube l8 which lies within the oven on the inner side of wall I5.
A Venturi element l9 fits within tube !8 near the front end thereof and presents a reduced external diameter surface on a portion 19a. A mixing tube 26 is located in the region of its front end. on the portion Isa. This mixing tube has a series of radial bores 50 and is adapted to be adjusted in axial and/or angular position relative to tube Hi to select desired conditions of mixing by varying the path to be traversed from a bore 5% in tube Zii to a bore 5| in tube It.
A high tension ignition device is constituted by ceramic or other insulating bushes 2! and 22 supported from the outer wall l2 and a radial flange on tube It respectively, together with a conductor 23. The inner end portion 23a of conductor 23 forms an electrode from which a spark may pass to a grounded part of the equipment such as the outer surface of tube 18.
A screw threaded plug 24 is screwed in a tapped bore in the plate II and is itself provided with an axial tapped bore 2 1a and a radial bore 24b communicating therewith.
A nozzle 25 has a screw'threaded shank engageable in bore 240.. The plug 24 is readily removable for inspection or replacement of nozzle 25. A coil spring 26 extends between the end of plug 24 and the Venturi element E9 to which it is attached and urges the element towards the interior of the oven against an abutment peg 2'! projecting radially inwards from the tube It. This peg acts as a key in a slot Nib in the Venturi element to lock said element against angular displacement.
The gas control valve comprises a body 28 axially bored at 28a and counterbored at 281). A spring loaded plunger 29, having a stem axially displaceable in a bore in a plug 30 screwed into the end of counterbore 28b, urges a ball 3| disposed within counterbore 2% towards the bore 2811. A valve rod 32 having a portion 32a of fluted or cruciform section is axially displaceable in bore 28a.
Rod 32 passes outwardly of the body '28 through a packing 33 compressed by a gland plug 34 and is urged outwardly by the action of spring loaded plunger 29 by way of ball 3|.
A radial bore 280 in the valve body communicates with one end of a bore or passageway Ha in the plate H by way of a peripheral groove. The other end of bore I la is aligned or otherwise finds communication with radial bore 241) in plug 24.
The body 28 has a tapped side connection 28d into which is engaged the threaded end portion of a gas supply pipe 35.
The air control valve comprises a body 35 axially bored at 36a, counterbored at 361) and provided with a reduced diameter screw threaded end portion 360. Body 36 is supported from the outer walls 12 of the oven by threaded engagement of a tapped plate piece 31 and portion 360 which passes through a hole in said wall.
A bore Hb in plate H is aligned with the termination of bore 36a and has its outer end closed by a screw threaded plug 36.
A valve element 39 has a reduced square solid shank portion 36a slidable within an axially extending square hole in plug 38, is boredaxially at 391), radially at39c, and has an enlarged diameter end portion 39d. For the greater part of its length element 30 presents an externalcylindrical surface slidable in bore 36a of the body, whilst the enlarged portion 69d is slidable in the 'counterbcre 36b. Adjustment of the maximum amount of air flow is then derived by rotation of plug 38 relative to plate I I, thereby effecting variation of the extent of alignment of bores 39c and I I0.
A spring 40 acts in compression between the inner end of element 39, within counterbore 36b, and the end of a screw threaded plug 4! threadedly engaged in the end of said counterbore, urging element 39 outwardly of the oven. A tapped side connection 3601 on the body 36 is engaged by a threaded end portion of an air supply pipe 42. A bore or passageway H0 in plate II provides communication between bore H12 and the interior end portion of mixing tube i3 which lugs and through a bore in the cam portion of the handle.
A bridge 46 has a reduced width portion 46a passing between the two lugs 43 and presents a cam engaging surfaces for coaction with the cam portion of handle 44. Conical depressions Lil 4 46b and 460 engage hemispherical end portions of the air valve element 39 and the gas valve rod 32 respectively.
By moving the handle 44 which forms a common operating means for both the gas and the air valves through about 180 from the position shown, both the valves, open in the position shown, become closed. It will be seen that one end, namely that having the depression 46b of the bridge 46 moves through a greater distance then the opposite end of the bridge, since the gas valve rod 32 merely moves outwardly a sufiicient distance to seal ball 3| in the end of bore 28a whereas the air valve element 39 moves outwardly a distance at least equal to the diameter of radial bore 390.
I declare that what I claim is:
A gas burner for attachment to the wall of a combustion chamber having separate air and gas conduits disposed adjacent to said chamber,
the combination of a plate and means for removably attaching it on said wall, said plate having separate air and gas inlet-passages therein independent of but in registry respectively with the outlet ends of said air and gas conduits, said plate having a bore communicating with said air passage, a gas nozzle on said plate at the outlet end of the gas passage therein and disposed within said bore, a flange on said plate, means to maintain the said flange in sealing contact with the said wall, a normally closed springoperated valve in said gas conduit and a valve rod carried by the plate for holding the'valve open when the plate has its flange in sealing con tact with said wall. 1
