In the releasable attachment which is described in United States patent application No.
764,800/4'7, which has matured to Patent No. 2,543,053, dated April 1'1), 1951, the forces due to the weight of a load depending from the hooks pass through the hook boss into the case of the atachment and thence upwardly through the case to a shackle or other suspensory connection engaged through a suspension hole provided for that purpose near to the top of the case. Such an arrangement is disadvantageous for the reason that the case requires to be constructed sufliciently robustly to enable it to transmit the aforesaid loading forces from the hooks through the case to the suspensory connection without distortion, such as might otherwise result in the jamming of the locking mechanism Or the relative displacement of the locking mechanism from the hooks. The object of the present invention is to provide an improved form of releasable attachment of the kind typified by that described and illustrated in United States Patent application No. 764,- 800/47, whereby the aforesaid disadvantage may be avoided, as will be seen from the ensuing description.
In a releasable attachment according to this invention the weight of a load supported by the hooks is transmitted to a shackle-pin passed through the hooks, through the medium of a bush co-axial with the hook pivot, said bush serving as a distance piece between the hooks and said pin. The bush may be constituted by a boss integral with or atached to the case, in which event it is possible to relieve the case of the duty of transmitting loads and to confine it solely to the functions of a housing or dust cover for the locking mechanism since the bush-like boss (floating between the shackle-pin and the hooks) serves to support the case independently of the parts through which the forces due to the load are transmitted.
One embodiment of this invention, as applied to a releasable attachment of the kind which forms the subject of United States patent application No. 764,800/47, is hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings. In said drawings, Fig. 1 is a front elevation of the improved attachment, Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on the line II-II of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 an elevation, partly in section, viewed as though one of the shackle-links and one-half of the case were removed.
The attachment illustrated comprises a case constituted by two mating portions and II which together enclose the upper parts of the load-bearing hooks l2, 13, the toggle-actuated locking mechanism and the release device. The said members Ill and II are provided with inwardly directed bosses M and 15 the peripheral surfaces whereof are machined to form a journal for the said hooks I 2, l3, and said bosses are drilled co-axially to receive a shear pin l6.
Shackle links ll, 18 are carried on the projecting extremities of said pin 18, and the upper ends of said links are connected in any suitable manner, e. g. by a tension bolt I 9, to provide a connection by which the attachment is suspended from a lifting gear or the like.
Thus the forces due to a load suspended by the hooks I2, 13 are transmitted directly through the bosses l4, l5 and the shear pin it to the shackle links I7, 18, the case and its contents floating on the pin it independently of the parts through which the loading forces are transmitted. This arrangement permits a greatly improved strength/weight ratio to be achieved in the design of the attachment, since the only function which the case now has to perform is that of providing an enclosure for the locking and release mechanism.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A releasable attachment comprising a pair of hooks, locking mechanism for releasably maintaining said hooks in load-engaging position, a case enclosing the upper portions of said hooks and supporting said locking mechanism in operative relation to said hooks, a pin extending through said hooks, shackle links mounted on and supporting said pin, and a bush mounted on said pin and supporting said case and said hooks.
2. An attachment as defined in claim 1, said bush and said case being integral.
3. An attachment as defined in claim 1, said case comprising two mating sections secured together, and said bush comprising inwardly directed bosses formed on said mating sections.
