UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFIcE.
CORNELIUS SHEPARDSON, OF OAZENOVIA, NEW YORK.
ROCKINQG-HORSE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 256,390, dated April 11, 1882.
' Application filed January 28, 1882. (No model.) I
To all whom it may CORCLI'IZ Be it known that I, CORNELIUS SHEPARD- SON, a citizen of the United States, resident at Oazenovia, in the county of Madison and State of New York, have invented a new and "aluableImprovementinRocking-Horses; and I do hereby declare that the following is' a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had tothe annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a perspective of my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view.
This invention has relation to an improvement on the side-frame toy rocker or shoo-fi y 5- and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the swinging adjustable axles 'extendin g entirely across the frame, said axles being provided with wheels at each end, and with intermediate arms extending at right angles to the axle and pivoted to the ends of the rockers, all as hereinafter set forth and especially pointed out in the claim appended.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the side-frame rocker, which may be of the ordinary form and construction.
B B indicate the axles, which extend transversely entirely across the frame'at each end, andare provided with wheels 0 on their spindle ends (1. Each axle is providednvith arms E near its ends, said arms extending at right angles to the axle, and being letinto the axle, as at g, or otherwise firmly securedthereto in some well-known manner. These arms E are placed at the proper distance from each other on the axle to engage or abut against the vertical faces of the rockers H, and the ends of the arms are pivoted to the ends of the rockers, as at k. The ends ofithc axle beyond the arms form bearings m, on which the rockers rest when the axle is arranged under the same. In this position the armslie lengthwise against the rockers, and are braced in position by the middle portion, I), of the axle, so that they cannot move laterally and work loose. The construction also keeps the wheels plumb and gives a steady and solid support to the frame, which becomes, when thus provided, a con venient rollin g vehicle easily pushed or pulled about. When the wheels are not needed the axles are designed to be swung upward above the rockers and rest against the ends of the side frame,'serving as stepping-bars.
I am well aware that it is not new to apply swinging arms carrying wheels to rockers, and I do not claim such devices, broadly.
I do not claim wheels arranged upon rockers in front and rear in combination with two profile frames connected togethenby a seat; nor do I claim a rocking device that can be con- .vcrted from a carriage to a rocking-horse.
What- I claim, an d desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with a side frame rocker, of the swinging adjustable axles B, extending entirely across the frame, carrying a wheel,
-at each end, and having the arms EE at right angles to said axle pivoted to the ends of the rockers and braced in contact with the rockerfaces by the intermediate portion,D,ot the axle, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribcdmy name in the presence of two witnesses.
CORNELIUS SHEPARDSON.
