Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ABRAM. V. WHITEMAN, OF PORT CHESTER, NEW YORK.
sruLKY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 496,627, dated May 2, 1893.
Application iiled OctoheI 19, 1892. Serial No. 449,329. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ABRAM. V. WIIITEMAN, of Port Chester, county of Westchester, and State of New York, have inventeda new and useful Improvement in Sulkies, of which the following is a specification.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a top view of a sulky containing my improvement. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same; and Fig. 3 is an end view thereof.
A, designates a sulky frame which may be of ordinary construction, comprising the shafts, a a', the seat, a2, and other usual appurtenances. The shafts, a a', rest on and are rigidly secu red to a cross bar, b, which extends beneath the frame, A, crosswise thereof a suitable distance and thence downwardly and rearwardly toward the hub of awheel, C, which is here shown arranged at the center of the sulky transversely thereof. This wheel, C, is preferably provided with a pneumatic tire c', of usual construction and is also fitted with ball bearings for its axle, c2.
D, is a brace which may be employed, if desired, to aid in supporting the frame, A. The upper portion of this brace maybe integral with or detachably secured to the bar, b, and its lower portion is bifurcated to inclose the wheel, C. The axle c2, of the wheel, C, is journaled in the extremities of the bar, b, and also in the bifurcated ends of the brace, D, and
may be secured in position by any suitable means. By this construction, I provide a sulky occupying less room crosswise thereof than heretofore, whereby a greater number may be arranged in line for racing or other purposes and the danger of accidents from collision with one another is greatly diminished. Greater speed is also obtainable by a sulky containing my improvement by reason of the reduction of friction.
I claiml. In combination, a sulky frame having the running gear arranged within the extremities of the snlky frame transversely thereof, and a bar, b, for supportingthe said sulky frame and rhaving downwardly and inwardly extending arms for supporting the said running gear, substantially as described.
2.- In a sulky, the combination of the cross bar, b, supporting the sulky frame, A, and having its extremities bent downwardly and rearwardly, the bifurcated brace, D, extending from the bar, b, centrally thereof and the wheel, C, having its axle journaled in the extremities of the bar, b, and the brace, D, substantially as described.
ABRAM. V. WHITEMAN.
