1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to a paint applicator which is especially adapted for use with water paints.
An object of this invention is to provide a device that will supply paint to an applicator from a reservoir means associated therewith which will eliminate the necessity of dipping the applicator in a paint bucket every time a stroke is made on the surface to be painted.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device that is simple, efiicient, easy to operate, durable, can be manufactured inexpensively and sold at a reasonable cost.
With these and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists of the novel details of construction, arrangement and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of the invention;
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view on the line 22 of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view on the line 33 of Figure 1.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, the reference numeral 10 designates a hollow cylindrical housing or body which is provided with a longitudinally extending rectangular opening [2 in the circumference I4 thereof.
Secured to the circumference I4 by means of screws I 6 is one end l8 of a handle attaching bracket 20, the other end 22 of which is twisted at 24 to lie in a plane at right angles to the end [8 and is adapted to be secured in the wooden handle 26 by means of a screw 28.
Mounted for rotation within the housing I is a hollow roller 30 having closed ends 32. The roller 30 is so mounted in the housing In by means of screws 33 passing through openings 34 in the ends 36 of the housing l0 and being received in oppositely positioned internally threaded bosses 38 that the roller 3|] has a slight clearance with the inner circumference of the housing ID at the bottom thereof.
When paint or other liquid A is placed in the housing I B it enters the roller 30 by means of elongated slots 42 which are provided in the ends 32 thereof in a manner simulating a cross.
Thus, the contents of the housing 10 is thoroughly agitated and completely mixed during the use of the device.
Mounted on the outer circumference 14 of the housing H] by means of the inturned bearing ends 44 of the spring arms 46 entering the bores 48 in the ends 50 thereof is a solid roller 52, which is so positioned by means of the bearing ends 54 of the spring arms 46 entering the bearings 56 secured to the circumference [4 of the housing 10 that it will enter the opening l2 in the circumference l 4 thereof and contact the roller 30 therein. The roller 52 is provided with a covering 58 which may be made of felt or any other material 2 that can be suitably used for applying paint to a surface.
In the operation of the device, paint is poured into the housing [0 by means of the opening l2 and the roller 52 is placed in contact with the surface to be painted and rotated thereon. By exerting a slight pressure on the handle 26 the spring arms 48 which normally retain the roller 52 out of contact with the roller 38 are pressed inward so that contact is made between the rollers 3!] and 52, and the action of rotating the roller 52 over the surface to be painted will in turn by frictional engagement rotate the roller 52, and the roller 30 by means of capillary attraction will supply liquid to the roller 52. As previously stated, the roller 30 will during the rotation thereof by the roller 52 agitate the paint and keep it thoroughly mixed during the use of the device.
It is believed that the operation of the device will be clear to those skilled in the art and that a device has been provided that will accomplish the objects of the invention.
It is also to be understood that various changes and modifications of the size, combination and arrangement of the various parts may be made provided they fall within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
A device of the character described, comprlsing a horizontally disposed hollow cylindrical housing adapted to hold liquid and provided in its upper side with an opening, a handle secured to one side of said housing, a hollow roller eccentrically mounted. within said housing, spring arms fixed to the opposite side of the housing and curving upwardly to lie in a plane over the opening, an absorbent roller of a size smaller than said opening rotatably supported solely by the upper ends of the spring arms and normally held above the opening in the housing by said arms, and said absorbent roller being adapted to be depressed through said opening into contact with said hollow roller whereby to effect the application of the liquid within the housing onto said absorbent roller for application of the liquid on the absorbent roller upon a surface to be coated.
