J. MAPPES.
BEER FAUGBT.
' No. 256,020. Patented Apr. 4,1882.
I'll/[111111111110 y II/IIIIIIIIII UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN MAPPES, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
BEER-FAUCET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 256,020, dated April 4, 1882.
Application filed January 14, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
*Be it known that I, JOHN MAPPES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Beer-Faucets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in those beer-faucets that contain a provision for the automatic admission of air to the interior of the barrel at each opening of the faucet whenever the pressure within the barrel falls below that of the atmosphere, and in quantity proportional to the difference of said pressures.
The accompanying drawing is a longitudinal section of atap or faucet provided with my improvement.
A represents the shaft or barrel, and B the plug or spigot of a beer-faucet.
'Att-ached to the upper side of the shaft A, near its heel, is a supplementary cock, D, whose inlet-port E is guarded by a gravitating valve, F, whose weight is so adjusted relatively to the passage as to permit said valve to rise and close the said inlet-port whenever the interior pressure exceeds that of the atmosphere. The said valve-guarded inlet E F communicates with the interior of the barrel by a bent tube, G, which, traversing the top of the faucet -shaft, passes through the upper part of the shaitbore rearward into the barrel in the manner shown. The spigotH of said supplementary cock D is provided with a rod, I, which is jourualed near its front extremity in a lug, J, on the top of the shaft A, and at said extremity carries a bevel-wheel, K, that meshes with a similar wheel, L, upon the spigot B of the main faucet.
The action of my device is as follows:[0n opening the faucet, as shown in the drawing, the geared connections LK I cause a simultaneous opening of the cock D. If, now, the interior pressure exceeds that of the atmosphere for the time being, the valve F, rising, closes the inlet-port E, and no air enters the barrel; but if the interior pressure is less than that of the atmosphere the valve F drops, as seen in the drawing, and permits air to enter in suflicient quantity to restore the equilibrium, and by so doing to allow free discharge, of beer through the faucet.
1 claim as new and of my invention The faucet having at its upper rear portion the supplementary cock D, provided with the valve-guarded inlet E F G, and the geared connection I K L, with the spigot, substantially as set forth.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
JOHN MAPPES.
