LIQUID-DISPENSING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL B. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Schulenburg, in the county of Fayette and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Liquid-Dispensing Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.

' As clearly appears in the drawings, my novel liquid dispensing apparatus comprises a tank 7 for gasolene or the like and said tank may be and preferably is located below the level of the ground. The tank is of the usual construction and may be provided with a filling aperture. However, the tank per 86 forms no part of my invention and hence any type of tank or container may be used.
At one end of said tank I provide a conduit 5 that extends approximately to the bottom of the tank 7 and is secured thereto by a collar 6 and at its upper end the pipe 5 is connected to a valve casing 4. The valve 4 is of the well known construction and comprises (as illustrated in Fig. 5) a stem 92 and a head 93; the said stem 92 being surrounded by a spring 94 that is housed within the valve casing 4 and a alts at its lower end against the head 93. At its extreme upper end the stem 92 has a member 92 that rests in and is confined by an eye 9" of the arm 9. The head 93 of the stem 92 will, under normal conditions rest in the seat formed in the casing 4 and hence prevent the flow of liquid from the tank 7.
The valve 4 is provided with a conduit 90 that extends at a right angle to and communicates with the conduit 5 and said condult 90 terminates in an upwardly extend- 1ng conduit 3 that enters an auxiliary tank 1 at the lower end of said tank. The said tank 1 is further provided with a flexible hose 2 and a stop-cock 2 the purpose of which will be apparent during the further disclosure of my invention. I
The reservoir or tank 7 is, in order to ascertain the amount of air pressure contained in said reservoir, provided with a gage 12, of well known construction having the tube connected with the tank 7 at its upper end.
In order to prevent unscrupulous persons from surreptitiously removing liquid from the tank 7 I place the valve 4 and its appurtenances as also the gage 12 within a casing 13; said casing being hinged. at 42 and secured at 41 with a lock of any form and construction and as clearly appears in Fig. 1 the conduit 3 and hence tank 1 are prevented from casual displacement by the bracket 13 that is secured to the casing or housing 13.
Immediately in rear of the casing 13, I provide a housing or casing for the operating mechanism of the device, the said housing comprising a top wall 19, bottom wall 27 and side walls 14 and 20; the housing or casing 13 being secured to the wall 14 as illustrated.
Vithin the casing formed by the walls 14, 19, 20 and 29 I secure the operating mechanism of the device which comprises a shaft a having a governor of the Pickering type consisting of the arms 41, wheel 40 and the revolving balls 18.
In order to increase or reduce the speed of the governor when occasion demands, I provide the thin screw 40 having a wheel or brake 40" that engages the wheel 40 of the governor.
At its opposite end to that on which the wheel is provided, the shaft a has a toothed wheel 17 that engages the gear 16. The shaft d is also provided with a toothed gear wheel 16' that in turn engages the toothed gear wheel 15 of a shaft 6; said shaft 6 being also provided with a toothed gear wheel 15; that engages a toothed gear wheel 10 of the shaft f. At Z) I provide a shaft having a toothed gear wheel 34 that also engages, the teeth 15 of the shaft 6. The shaft 7 has a housing 33 and at one side of the said housing is a ratchet wheel 41 and engaging said ratchet wheel 41 is a pawl 43.
Secured to the shaft f within the housing is a coil spring (not shown) and depending from said shaft is a lever having a weight 35'.
By reference to Fig. 1 it will be seen tha below the shaft 1) I provide a shaft 0 having a disk 33 and saiddisk is provided with a projection 36 and notch 36 for an important purpose hereinafter set forth.
The shaft 0 derives motion from the shaft 5 and imparts said motion to the disk 33.
Arranged in the casing is an arm 29 secured thereto in movable manner by the brace 29. A connection 30, having the short arm 31, is secured to said arm 29 and extending at approximate right angles and in connection with the arm 31 is an arm 32 secured to the lower wall 27 of the casing by a spring 28. At-its inner end the arm 32 is provided with a dog that rests in the notch 36 of the disk 33'.
Resting in the groove 36 of said disk 33 is the member 9 of the arm 9 and said arm 9 is secured to the casing wall 14 by a guide member 4 as shown and is thence extended through the wall 14 and secured to the stem 92 as before described.
At its forward end the arm 29 is provided with a coin actuated plate 26.
Secured to the front wall 20 of the casing is a housing having a hinged lid 21 and a keeper 25 and lock 24 and in said lid 21 is a coin aperture 22 having a guideway chute 23.
In order to wind the spring of the shaft the handle 50 is secured to the outer end of said shaft.
In the practical operation of the device, gasolene or other fluid is placed in the reservoir 7 and the spring of the shaft f is placed under tension by rotation of the handle 50.
WVhen it is desired to obtain fluid from the device, a coin C is placed in the slot 22 and will be caused to travel down the guideway 23 and fall upon the plate 26. The arm 29' will thusbe moved downwardly and will impart a motion to the arm 32 and release the dog 35 from the notch 36. This will permit the disk 33' to rotate and the portion 9 to become unseated from its seat.
By reason of the governor of shaft a and the spring and gears 0f the shafts b, 0, d, 6
and f the organized mechanism will be placed in operation.
Rotation of the disk 33 will-cause the arm 9 to raise and hence the valve will be unseated and permit fluid to pass from the tank 7 to conduits 5, 11 and 3 into auxiliary tank 1 where it may be drawn off by manipulation of the cock 2 of hose 2.
It is evident that the disk 33 controls the amount of liquid dispensed, andhence by decreasing the size of the disk, a smaller amount of fluid will be dispensed and by increasing the size a larger amount may be dispensed.
In order to cause liquid to flow from the tank 7, when occasion demands, it will simply be necessary to operate the hand pump 69 in the well known manner and thereby exert a certain amount of pressure on' the contents of the tank.
In order to prevent a person from inserting a piece of wire or the like into the coin slot and thereby operate the device, the coin slot may be arranged in a staggered manner.
I would distinctly have it understood that the coin-actuated apparatus described and shown in connection with my dispensing apparatus, forms no part of my invention, but is simply used for the purpose of illustration.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is In a coin actuating apparatus, the combination of a liquid reservoir, a conduit extending into the reservoir, a valve arranged in the upper end of the conduit, a conduit extending at right-angles from the valve and then upward, an auxiliary reservoir secured tothe upper end of the last-named conduit, a casing arranged around the valve, a stem secured to the valve head, a lever secured to the stem and entering the casing and having a bent end opposite the end secured to the stem, a spring actuated disk having a notch that normally receives the bent end to preclude downward movement of the lever that is secured to the stem; a second notch provided in the disk, a short arm fulcrumed in the casing and having a bent end that normally rests in the last named notch and a comparatively long arm secured to the short arm whereby on downward movement of the long arm the notch of the short arm will be displaced from the notch of the disk to permit rotary motion of said disk.
