UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BRADLEY A. FISKE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HANDLE FOR POCKET-KNIVES AND OTHER IMPLEMENTS SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 255,847, dated April 4, 1882,
Application filed July 8, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Beit known thatI,BRAJ LEYA. FIsKE, aeitizen of the-United States. residin g at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tool-Handles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 isaview sho'wingthe tool in an open position. Fig. 2 is a view showing the tool in a closed position, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the tool. Fig. 4 is a cross-section, showing the construction and position of the yoke with reference to the spring and knife or tool.
This invention has relation to improvements in tools, having especially for its object to facilitate the opening and closing of the toohby making it capable of manipulation with one hand, and to enable the employment among other instruments of a blade with either a single or double edge.
My invention consists of the construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In carrying out my invention I employ, as will be seen by reference to the accompanying drawings, a handle, A, of any desired construction, and provided with a plate-spring, a, fastened at the rear end of the handle, and having its forward end provided with a staple, b. The parallel bars or portions of the staple are guided in passages b in the handle, while its .yoke bridges the portion of the handle between said passages outside of the handle. At this point the yoke or staple is provided, for convenience of operation, with a disk finger-piece, c. The spring a is supplied with a detent, cl, near its forward end,
to engage a notch, e, in the inner end of the tool.
B is the tool, in the instance shown a knifeblade, and which, it is obvious, can have a double cutting-edge, and thus serve in the capacity of two blades, with my invention, due
to the manner of opening and closing the tool. The blade is only different in construction from others in having the notch e, above referred to. It can be slipped in and out of'the handle, for renewal or other purposes, by simply removing the screw-confined plug f in the outer end of the handle. The spring-holding device of the tool can be readily changed in construction without affecting the principle of my invention.
Itis obvious that this invention can be readily applied to a tile, awl, screw-driver, or other I similar tools.
To open the tool, pressure is exerted by the thumb upon the disk 0, releasing the detent d of the spring a from the tool, the instrument being held with its point downward, when the tool will be projected, as shown in Fig. 1. The removal of pressure from the disk will enable the spring and its staple oryoke to automatically secure the tool in said position. In orderto close the tool, pressure is again applied, as before, to the disk 0 and the position of the tool reversed, its blade pointing upward.
From the foregoing it will be noticed that the opening and closing of the knife or other tool are greatly facilitated, it only being necessary to use one hand for that purpose, which is a matter of great convenience at times when one hand is employed.
I am aware that a knife-blade or other implement with a handle, which may alsoserve as a sheath to slide in when not in use, and by which the blade or implement may be brought out and locked in a position ready for use, is not broadly new with me.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination, with the handle provided with a plate-spring having a detent and a yoke or staple, constructed and arranged as shown and described, of the notched longitudinally sliding or moving too], substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BRADLEY ALLAN FISKE.
