This invention relates to a made up four-inhand necktie which may be secured in place about the neck of the wearer.

One of the objects of this invention is to provide a means for enlarging the four-in-hand knot of a necktie without utilizing portions of the necktie for this purpose.

Another object of this invention is to provide a simple and yet effective structure which is clamped to the band which secures the necktie in place and which will extend laterally of that band so that a four-in-hand necktie may be tied over this laterally extending portion to enlarge the necktie.

Another object of this invention is to provide a simple and efficient means for securing the enlarging portion in place.

With these and other objects in View, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the necktie formed in accordance with this invention;

Figure 2 is a perspective view of a member which is used for enlarging the knot;

Figure 3 is a perspective View of this member partially folded into a position for clamping to the band;

Figure 4 is a perspective view of the member of Figure 3 secured to the band and ready to have the necktie tied about it;

Figure 5 is a perspective view showing the necktie being knotted about the member and band for the purpose of providing the knot desired;

Figure 6 is a View similar to Figure 4 but showing a modified structure.

In proceeding with this invention, I utilize a piece of cardboard which is doubled upon itself to provide a protruding portion which extends laterally of the band and which has portions extending in opposite directions to lie along the band so that the same may be secured thereto after which the four-in-hand necktie may be tied about the member and the knot will be enlarged by reason of the peculiar shape of the member within the knot.

With reference to the drawings, I designates an elastic band having ahook H at one end and an eye or ring 12 at the other end for detachably securing these two ends together.

The member which is the subject of this invention is shown at M as a cut-out piece of cardboard which may be folded as at l with por- 2 tions [6 extending from this fold to lie one along the other, while end portions I! extend in opposite directions from these back-to-back 'portions it and are secured to the elastic band I H]. An intermediate V-shaped folded member i8 may be interposed between the members Iii so as to thicken and strengthen the same. The portions 51, I1 are brought in face-to-face relation with the band Ill and then a tape is wound about the portions 16, It which are folded upon themselves so as to hold them in parallel relation and is also wound about the portions 11, I! and the band It so as to hold the member onto the band with the portions I6 extending laterally thereof and at right angles to the elastic band Iii. The ends of the tape I9 so wound may be held in place by sewing or any other suitable means which may be desired. The tape may be wound so as to be more bulky on the side of the portion 16, I6 which receives the narrower portion of the tapered tie to build this up even with the opposite side receiving the wider portion of the tapered tie. In some cases the member may be secured by staples 2! as in Figure 6 instead of by tape.

After the member is so secured to the elastic band Ill a necktie designated 20 is knotted about this member in such a way that the laterally protruding portion 2! extends into the knot and increases the thickness of the knot by reason of the longitudinal dimension of the portions l6, 16 of the member.

As shown in Figure 5, the broad portion 2| of the tie as it begins to narrow as at 22 is passed over the folded and secured member, as shown in Figure 4 or 6 and is then passed back of the member and around the front of the portion 2| as at 23 and then through the loop 2e thus formed with the narrow end 25 extending in back of the member 2| to provide a four-in-hand knot designated generally 26 when drawn up into place as shown in Figure 1.

By this arrangement a single pass of the tie about the enlarging member or padding member is provided and yet a large knot is formed which is desirable.

I claim:

l. A form for a four-in-hand necktie compris ing a band to extend about the neck, a member comprising a strip doubled upon itself to provide an intermediate portion protruding laterally of the band, and end portions extending in opposite directions therefrom lengthwise along and secured to said band, and adapted to be inserted in a four-in-hand knot for a necktie, said mem- 3 her being of a material which has sufficient inherent rigidity to be self supporting.

2. A form for a four-in-hand necktie comprising a band to extend about the neck, a member having portions lying along said band with an intermediate portion protruding laterally of the band, said member being secured to said band by helically winding a tape about said member and band, and adapted to be inserted in a fourin-hand knot of a necktie, said member beingof a material which has suflicient inherent rigidity to be self supporting.

A four-in-hand necktie comprising a band to extend about the neck, a member having portions lying along and secured to said band with" an intermediate portion protruding later-ally oft the band with a helical winding of tape about said intermediate portion, andadapted to' be in' serted in a four-in-hand knot of a necktie, saidmember being of a material which has sufiicient' inherent rigidity to be self supporting.

A four-in-hand necktie comprising a band to extend about the neck, a-memberhaving'por tions lying along said band with an intermediate portion protruding laterally of the band with a helical winding of tape about said intermediate portion, said member being secured to said band by helically winding a tape about said member and band, and adapted to be inserted in a fourin-hand knot of a necktie, said member being of a material which has sufiicient inherent rigidity to be self supporting.
