\ BOOK MARKER Filed Nmf. ,23, 1948 moax INVENTOR.
Patented June 19, 1951 BOOK MARKER Oscar W. J oily, WestSpringfield, Mass, assignor toSpringfield Photo Mount 00., Holyoke, Mass, .atcorporatilm of Massachusetts Application November 23, 1948, Serial No. 61,620 1 Claim. (01. 129-1) My invention relates to improvements in a book and is directed more particularly to the provision of a book marker upon the end or outside edge of a book and to an improvement in the means for positioning the same.
It is the principal object of -my invention to provide a noveland improved'construction of the type in which a back bone of a book is provided-with a slot or slots and a marker is associated therewith.
- With the above primary object in view, it is another object of my invention to provide a construction of the above described character which is relatively simple and compact in accordance with the demands and desires of the purchasing public as well as .of the manufacturers thereof and" which is not only attractive in its appearance and practical in its value but also reliable in its operation and thoroughly efficient in its use.
It is a still further object'to provide a device whichis constructed of relatively simple parts which are adapted to be readily assembled and which-when onceassembled are securely retained in operative relationship and which are not apt to be readily separatedfrom each other, either c id n ally orotherwise.
The existing practice in the trade is .to provide indexes on the inside of the book. Books heretofore known all have the common objection that in order to use the indexes thereof, one has to openthe book in order to read the index and to determine the contents.
Accordingly. I have devised a novel means whereby such difiiculties and objections are overcome. I accomplish this by the, provision of a device which obviates the need for openingthe book to read the index, the index being located upon the outside thereof.
Other prime objects of my invention include: first, the provision of a simplified construction and arrangement of a book marking device which is strong, durable and compact in its structure and is distinctive in its appearance; second, the securement of a higher degree of accuracy in the manner of work performed therewith than has heretofore been possible with prior devices known in the art; third, the attainment of a higher degree of speed of construction and assembly of the device due to its simplification in design and its unique composition of parts; fourth, the attainment of a flexibility or a capability of adjustment by which a variety of work can be produced by means of the same device; fifth, the provision of an improved book marking device which may be made more economically and with fewer operations in the manufacture of its parts, as well as in the assembly of the same, than prior devices known in the art; and sixth, the provision of a construction which may be readily installed with respect to books on which it may be used.
These objects I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts thereof, as will fully appear by a perusal of the description below and by various specific features which will be hereinafter set forth.
To the above cited and other ends and with the foregoing and various other novel features and advantages and other objects of my invention as will become more readily apparent as the description proceeds, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more particularly pointed out in the claim hereunto annexed and more fully described and referred to in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Fig. 1 is an end elevational view of a book showing the device of my invention associate-cl therewith, I
Fig. 2 is a side elevational View of abook showing my device in association therewith and having certain parts broken away for purposes of clarity, 1
Fig. 3- is a sectional view along the line 33 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a plan view of the device of my invention in open or inoperative position.
In the above mentioned drawings annexed hereto and forming'a part of -this sp ecification,
have shown but one'embodimentof my invention which is deemed preferable, but it is to be understood that changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of the inven tion.
Referring now to the different drawings more in detail, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures and referring more particularly to the preferred form of my invention selected for illustrative purposes, I have shown a book generally indicated by the numeral Hi.
In the form shown front and rear cover members marked l2 and M respectively are provided.
The members I2 and 14 have hingedly connected thereto flap members ['6 and I3 respectively thereby facilitating the wide opening of the book as in the case of a phonograph record 3 album or other loose leaf book in the well known manner.
Sheets or leaves 25 are held in stacked relation between the members 12 and I4 by means of binding posts 22 substantially as shown in Fig. 3 although it will be understood that any other form of book might be substituted for the form shown in this illustrative case.
The sheets 25 and the flap members E6 and H, as Well are apertured so as to receive the bind ing posts 22.
If desired spacers 21 may be employed between the leaves 23 as in the well known manner in the case of the aforementioned phonograph record album.
A back bone is provided at the bound end of the book to cover and conceal the stack of leaves 26 and in the form shown in Fig. 3, this is a U- shaped member comprising a back member 25 and inwardly extending side members 26 and on opposite sides thereof, which embrace opposite sides of the stack of leaves 29.
The members 25 are also apertured so as to receive the binding posts 22 when in alignment with the sheets 20 and the flap members l3 and 18 as sired side tabs 36 and 36 may be provided which extend outwardly in opposite directions from the main body portion at opposite sides thereof all as shown in Fig. 4.
The tabs are bendable angularly relative to the plane of the member 36 when in the open or inoperative position.
The member 38 is of such size and configuration that, when in operative position, the main body portion thereof squarely overlies a portion of the back member 24.
A pair of vertically spaced slots 38 are provided in the back member 24 in such a manner as to receive the upper and lower tabs 32 and 34 therethrough as shown in Fig. 1 whereby the main body portion of the member 30 lies adjacent the back member 24 upon the outside surface thereof and the tabs 32 and 34 being receivable by flexing through the slots 38 underlie the back member 24.
The side tabs 36 and 36 are bendable angularly relative to the plane of the member 30 and are receivable between the side members 26 and 26 of the back bone and the flap members l6 and I8.
It will be understood however that where other bindings are employed, other vertically extending slots might be provided in the back member 24 so as to receive the side tabs 36 and 36 in a manner similar to the manner in which the upper and lower tabs 32 and 34 are received.
As an additional feature of my invention, the side tabs 36 and 36 may be provided with insets 3'! and 31 on the outermost or free edges thereof which are of such configuration as to snugly embrace the binding posts of the book when in operative position as shown in Fig. 2.
The invention may be embodied in other spe oific forms without departing from the essential characteristics thereof. Hence, the present embodiments are therefore to be considered in all respects merely as being illustrative and not as being restrictive, the scope of the invention being indicated by the appended claim rather than by the foregoing description, and all modifications and variations as fall within the meaning and purview and. range of equivalency of the appended claim are therefore intended to be embraced therein.
What it is desired to claim and secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
The combination with the longitudinally extending back portion of a book provided with longitudinally spaced transversely extending slits and having longitudinal rear portions of covers removably secured to longitudinal side members thereof extending from opposite longitudinal edges of said back portion at right angles thereto of a marker therefor comprising, a marker member formed from bendable material to have an elongated body portion with upper and lower end tabs extending from opposite transverse ends of said body portion insertable in the slits of said back portion and with side tabs extending from opposite longitudinal sides of said body portion insertable between the longitudinal side portions of the back and rear portions of the covers.
