Application February 25, 1949, Serial No. 78,289
3 Claims.
This invention relates to a garment hanger.
An object of the invention is the production of an emcient and simple garment hanger that will admirably support a complete suit or ensemble.
Another object of the invention is the construction of a garment hanger which has a rotatable hook section whereby the jaws of the garment hanger can be easily opened if closed, or the jaws can be very efiiciently held in a closed or clamping position as the operator desires.
A still further object of the invention is the provision in a garment hanger of a rotatable hook section which has interlocking legs when the garment hanger is in a closed or clamping condition, and when the legs are separated the jaws will be wide open.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention comprises certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more par ticularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a View in side elevation of a gar ment hanger constructed in accordance with the present invention, showing the ends of one of the jaws in vertical section.
Figure 2 is an end view of the garment hanger shown in an open or non-clamping position.
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on line 3-3, Fig. 1 and looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 4 is a View in side elevation of the garment hanger when in a partially closed or clamping position.
Figure 5 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 55, Figure 4, and looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 6 is a view in side elevation of the garment hanger when in a closed or clamping position.
Figure 7 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 'l--l', Figure 6 and looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring to the drawings, in which the preferred embodiment of this invention is illustrated, l| designates the two substantially straight jaws which are preferably formed of plastic material. In each jaw i are two vertical slots 2; these slots 2 are formed near the end of the jaw for the purpose hereinafter described.
A frame 3 is provided which has at each of its ends two angular arms 4. In the middle of the frame 3 is a substantially horizontal comparatively large loop 5. Each arm 4 is provided with 2 an upstanding clamping U-shaped finger 6. This finger 6 is frictionally held in slot 2 (Fig. 1) against accidental displacement, because the finger 6 will tightly clamp the walls of the slot 2.
A rotatable hook section I is provided which comprises a hook 8 and two angular legs 9.. Each leg 9 is rotatably mounted in one of the jaws l with a knob In on its outer end, to prevent the legs from coming out of the jaw I. The hook section 1 extends through the large loop 5 and is rotatably mounted therein. The legs 9 are substantially S-shape and when the jaws are in their closed position (Figure 7) these s-shape legs interlock as shown.
In operation, when the jaws are in their closed position (Figs. 6 and '7), to open the jaws the operator turns the hook 8 to the left, rotating the hook section 7, which will cause the jaws to begin to separate, as clearly shown in Figure 5, then upon continuing the rotary movement of the hook section, to make a complete revolution, the jaws will be open, as shown in Figure 2 with the hook section in the position shown in Figure 1. From actual experience with a working device, it has been found that the device is positive in operation, easy to manipulate, and very satisfactory in holding garments and apparel of all kinds as the operator desires.
On the inner face of each jaw l, near its ends, are felt paddings H which assist in efficiently holding the garment or other object positioned between the jaws I, when the jaws are in their closed position (Fig. 7).
By reason of the S-shape or angular legs 9 interlocking when the device is in a closed position, a very secure lock is produced for preventing the jaws from separating while in operation.
The wire of which the frame 3 and the hook section I are constructed is of sufficient springy nature as to give the efficient results herein indicated.
Referring to Figure 3, the angular legs 9 rotate in the apertures 12 formed vertically in laws I.
While I have described the preferred embodi-' ment of my invention and illustrated the same in the accompanying drawings, certain minor changes or alterations may appear to one skilled in the art to which this invention relates, during the extensive manufacture of the same, and I, therefore, reserve the right to make such alterations or changes as shall fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a garment hanger the combination of jaws, a frame provided with a loop, a rotatable hook section positioned in said loop, said rotatable hook section provided with a pair of angular interlocking legs, and said legs rotatably mounted in and extending through said jaws and provided on their outer ends with means on the outside of said jaws preventing said legs from pulling out of said jaws.
2. In a garment hanger, the combintion of jaws, a frame provided with a loop, a rotatable hook section extending through said loop, said rotatable hook section provided on its outer end with a hook and on its inner end with a pair of substantially S-shaped legs, said S-shape legs having portions rotatably mounted in said jaws, and knobs formed on the outer ends of said legs outside of said jaws.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a garment hanger comprising a pair of substantially straight jaws, each jaw provided near its ends with open ended vertical slots, a frame provided at its center with a large horizontal loop and at each end with a pair of arms, each arm provided with an upstanding inverted U-shape finger, said finger positioned in one of said slots, a rotatable hook section extending through said large loop, said hook section provided on its outer end with a hook and on itsinner end with interlocking substantially S-shape legs, and said legs rotatably mounted in and extending through said jaws and each leg provided outside of the jaw with an integral knob, substantially as shown and described.
