CLOTHES HANGER WITH ADJUSTABLE SHOULDER PIECES Filed June 5, 1947 Fig. I.
Inuentm Louis Ronzio W W I i 5/ a I, Itmys Patented May 2, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CLOTHES HANGER WITH ADJUSTABLE SHOULDER PIECES 1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in clothes hangers, more specifically, adjustable coat and pants hangers, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a device of the character herein described, which embodies in its construction adjustable shoulder pieces slidably mounted on the limbs of the hanger, whereby the overall length or span of the hanger may be easily and conveniently adjusted to suit the shoulder width of the coat or jacket hung upon the same.
A further object of the invention is to provide a clothes hanger which, by virtue of the construction above outlined, will effectively assist in maintaining the clothes in better shape and form, and will eliminate the conventionally experienced formation of creases or wrinkles resulting from the use of a hanger which is too small for the coat or jacket positioned thereon.
Another object of the invention is to provide an adjustable clothes hanger which is simple in construct on and in which the adjustment of the span may be quickly and easily effected.
An additional object of the invention is to provide an adjustable clothes hanger which will readi ily lend itself to economical manufacture and which is otherwise well adapted for the purpose for which it is intended.
With the above more important objects in view and such other objects as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the construction and arrangement of parts as shown in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure l is an elevational view of the invention;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary plan view, taken substantially in the plane of the line 22 in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary perspective view showing a portion of the supporting member used in the hanger and the manner in which it is attached to the suspension hook;
Figure 4 is a cross sectional view, taken substantially in the plane of the line 4-4 in Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a cross sectional view, taken substantially in the plane of the line 5-5 in Figure 1; and
Figure 6 is a cross sectional view, taken substantially in the plane of the line 6-6 in Figure 1.
Like characters of reference are used to designate like parts in the specification and through out the several views.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the invention consists of an adjustable clothes hanger designated generally by the reference character III, the same embodying in its construction the supporting member II which includes a pair of downwardly and outwardly extending strap-like limbs I2 and [3.
The outer ends of these limbs are connected together by means of a cross-bar It, the latter, in effect, being formed integrally with the limbs l2, 13 from one piece of material, the intermediate portion of which constitutes the cross-bar, while its end portions are angulated to provide the limbs l2, l3, as will be clearly apparent. The adjacent inner end portions of the limbs i2, I3 are secured together by welding, or the like, as indicated at I5, and it will be noted that while the limbs, in View of their strap-like configuration, are disposed on edge, as it were, the material form ing the cross-bar it is horizontally flat, so to speak, this being accomplished by the formation of suitable twists It, as is best shown in Figures 1 and 4.
It will be also noted that the cross-bar M is upwardly convexed as at H, so that trousers, or the like, may be positioned thereon without creasing.
The juxtaposed end portions of the limbs l2, I; which are secured together are formed with outward arcuations defining an opening IS in order to accommodate a suitable bushing l9. This bushing, in turn. accommodates the shank portion 20 of a rotatable suspension hook 2|, the latter extending upwardly and providing means whereby the entire hanger may be suspended from suitable supporting structure (not shown).
Needless to say, the lower end of the hook portion 20 may be flared so as to provide a retaining shoulder 22, whereby separation of the hook from the hanger is prevented.
The essence of the invention resides in the provision of a pair of shouldenpieces 23, each of which is slidably mounted on the outer end portion of one of the limbs l2, l3. Each of these shoulder-pieces consists of a strip of resilient material which is doubled upon itself, as it were, to provide a pair of arms 24 which receive therebetween the end portions of the associated limb of the hanger.
It will be observed that the closed end portion of the shoulder-pieces 23 is relatively wide as indicated at 25, so as to provide substantial support for the shoulder of the coat or jacket positioned on the hanger. The free end portions of the shoulder-pieces are angulated to provide inturned detents 26, while the intermediate portions or the arms 24 are inwardly arcuated so that they frictionally engage the associated, limb of the hanger. It will be apparent that in this manner, the intermediate portions of the arms 24 will provide the necessary frictional contact whereby the shoulder-pieces 23 are retained in slidable engagement with the hanger limbs.
Means are also furnished for retaining the shoulder-pieces on the limbs and, at the same time, for releasably locking the shoulder-pieces in a predetermined position with respect to the limbs, whereby; the hanger :may be easily and conveniently adjusted to suitcoats and jackets of vari- Ous sizes.
Said means consists of a plurality of locking bands or loops 21, each of which is formed from a strip of suitable material and assumesthe configuration best illustrated in the accompanyin Figure 5.
These bands are positioned.preferablyin pairs, on the shoulder-pieces 23 so that'they encircle the arms 24, matters being so arranged .that when the bands 21 on each of the shoulder-pieces -areidrawntogether, (see 28 in Figure '2) they will be disposed .on 'the concaved or inwardly arouated midportion of the arms and, as a result, the :frictional engagement of the arms on the associrz'ated' limbs will be relaxed and the shoulder-pieces .a'ma-y be slid inwardly-and outwardly, as desired, wand; indicated by the'arrows 29.
"It Will be apparent that in this-manner, the 'i' hangerz'may" be adjusted so as to'suit different -i'shoulder"spans of various coats and jackets such as may be positioned thereon.
"When it is desired to lock the shoulder-pieces "in a=predetermined relative position with respect "to the limbs of the hanger, it is only necessary" to "slide apart the bands 27 on each shoulder piece, 'whereby the arms 24, particularlythe end portions 26 thereof, will be urged into firm frictional "engagement with the associated limbs, so that further sliding of the shoulder pieces with respect to the limbs will be prevented.
' changes inthe details of construction, combination and arrangement 'ofparts' may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope :of the invention as claimed.
,Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
In an adjustable clothes hanger, the combine.-
ision of a supporting limb having flat opposite side surfaces, ashoulder piece comprising a resilient U-shaped strap affording a relatively wide ,bight portion and a pair of closely spaced arms terminating at their free ends in inturned opposing detents in abutment with the'respectiveyside surfaces of said limb, intermediate portionsiof said arms beingbowed toward each other-and frictionally engageable with said respective-side surfaces, and a keeper loop slidable on said arms toward and away from saidtdetentsqfor respectively locking and-unlocking said shoulder piece against sliding movement on said limb.
