Application November 1, 1947, Serial No. 783,537 3 Claims. (01. -484) This application relates to beds and has particular reference to means for extending the length of the frame of such beds.

Full size beds such as ordinarily used in the average home are usually made to a uniform standard length to accommodate people of average height but are not generally found comfortable to persons who are six feet tall or more. It is, in view of this condition, the general object of my invention to provide simple and inexpensive means attachable to the rails of the beds commonly used at the present time for the purpose of lengthening the frame thereof.

With this and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination hereinafter described in detail and reference is invited to the accompanying drawings in which a preferred form of the invention is illustrated.

In the drawings:

Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a bed combination in which the device of the invention is embodied;

Fig. 2 shows on a larger scale one of the bed rails of Fig. l, to one end of which the device of my invention is attached as in practice;

Fig. 3 is an end view of Fig. 2;

Fig. 4 illustrates the blank of one of the attachment members as it appears before it is formed into the shape indicated in Fig. 2; and

Fig. 5 illustrates a, filler block forming part of the device of my invention.

The bed shown in Fig. 1 is of common present-day construction including end frames l and 2 to which side rails 3 and 4 are attached by means of conventional hooks 5, 6 engaging sockets of the end frames, in the commercially wellknown manner.

The attachment of my invention consists mainly of a plate Ill which is bent on line H to form a flange [2 at right angles to the body of the plate and hooks l3, 14 are extended from this flange in parallel relation to the body of the plate and in continued alignment with the hooks 5, 6 of the bed rail. This attachment member may be secured in position on the end of the bed rail in any suitable manner, as by means of screws l5, and it is for convenience in mounting made with one or more lips 16, which extend over the top surface of the rail substantially as indicated in the drawings.

As above stated, the attachment is made to suit taller people and the extent to which it projects beyond the end of the rail may be very slight, ordinarily not more than a few inches. There will, for this reason, he no difficulty in using the mattresses which ordinarily come with the bed, but of course, where the extension is excessive, it may be found preferable to provide mattresses especially made for the purpose. As shown in the drawings, the attachment is mounted to extend a considerable distance beyond the end of the bed rail, but this is merely done in order clearly to show the various parts of the bed rail combination and is not to be considered a limitation of the combination.

For the sake of appearance and also in order to provide an attachment having no exposed sharp edges, it is advisable to add a filter block I1, such as indicated in Figs. 2 and 5, and which may be clamped in position on the member Hi by means of screws l8. It is, of course, necessary to provide in one end of this block a recess iii of a size to receive therein the hooks 5, 6 extending from the bed rail. It may also be found advantageous, in the commercial distribution of the attachment of my invention, to include sets of blocks of various lengths not only for convenience in mounting the attachment on the bed rail but also to enable the user to obtain the desired length of rail extension without having to resort to measuring devices and mental calculations. For convenience in selection of the proper length of extension, it may be found advisable to indicate the length directly on the block substantially as indicated in 20 at Fig. 5.

In the drawings, for the sake of clearness, I have shown the attachment member H] placed on the outer side surface of the bed rail 3. However, it is merely a matter of interchanging the two rails 3, i in order to present the appearance of a continuous wooden rail. Right is reserved, also, to embody in the device modifications within the scope of the claims hereto appended.

I claim:

1. For attachment to a bed rail, having hooks extending from the end thereof, an extension plate mountable on the side of said rail to pro- J'ect a distance beyond the end thereof, the projecting end of the plate having a flange at right angles thereto and hooks projecting from said flange in continued alignment with the hooks of the bed rail, and a. filler member of predetermined length seatable between the flange of the plate and the end of the rail in continued alignment with the rail to determine the length of rail extension.

2. For attachment to a bed rail, having hooks extending from the end thereof, an extension plate mountable'on the side of said rail to project a distance beyond the end thereof, the projecting end of the plate having a flange at right angles thereto and hooks projecting from said flange in continued alignment with the hooks of the bed rail, and a, filler block of the required length seatable between the flange of the plate and the end of the rail in continued alignment with the rail to determine the length of rail extension, there being a recess in the inner end of said filler block of a size to receive the end hooks of the rail.

3. For attachment to a bed rail, having hooks 1 extending from the end thereof, an extension plate mountable on the side of said rail to project a distance beyond the end thereof, the projecting end of the plate having a flange at right angles thereto and hooks projecting from said flange in continued alignment with the hooks of the bed rail, the plate being made with a lip engaging the upper edge of the rail properly to 4 position the plate thereon, and a filler block of the required length seated between the flange of the plate and the end of the rail, said block having a recess in the inner end thereof of a size to receive therein the hooks of the rail.
