This invention relates to hardware forextension tables, and more particularly to an improved slide mechanism for supporting a retractable extension leaf for a refectory table.
The primary object of the invention is to provide an improved and simplified slide mechanism which can readily be installed and adjusted after the table top has been secured to its supporting frame. M
Another object of the invention is to provide a slide" mechanism whichis'secured' to the" table top and front frame of the 'tablefandthereby reinforces and "strengthens" the table structure itself.
Another object of the invention is to "provide narrow metal supporting arms for anextension leaf, so that narrow slots in the end frames of the table are sufficient to accommodatethe arms, and large unsightly openings are not required.
A further object of the invention is to provide a slide mechanism with improved attaching members that can be readily adjusted to bring the extension leaf to the proper level, and a'concealed guide member supports the extension arm by metal to metal contact-in'retracted, extended and intermediate positions.
The invention is illustrated in a preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view showing the improved slide mechanism installed in one end of a table; Fig. 2, a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view showing the table with slide mechanisms installed on both ends, one leaf being retracted and the opposite leaf extended; Fig. 3, a bottom plan view of the table and mechanism shown in Fig. 2; Fig. 4, a fragmentary sectional view taken as indicated at line 4-4 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 5, a fragmentary sectional view taken as indicated at line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
In the embodiment illustrated, a refectory table is shown having a supporting frame 6 carried by legs I. A table top 8 is secured to the central portion of the frame, leaving open spaces at each end which are sufiiciently large to receive extension leaves 9. The end members of the frame are provided with narrow slots I0, through which the arms of the slide mechanisms may extend when the leaves are in extended position.
The present invention is directed to the metal slide mechanism and two of said mechanisms are required for each extension leaf. The slide mechanism has a guide member I l which is pivotally secured at its rear end to the under side of the table top by an inverted L-shaped bracket l2 and screws l3. The pivotal support at the extreme rear is provided by a rivet l4, and a second rivet l5 extends through a vertically elongated slot in the bracket l2, so that the front end of the guide member Il may be raised or lowered slightly to the desired adjusted position.
The guide member II has a, longitudinally extending closed slot l6 which is inclined upwardly and forwardly at one end, as shown in'Figs. 1 and 2. The member is also provided at its front end portion with a hook-shaped terminal slot I1, and the lower edge l8 of the guide member serves as a track to guide a stud into the slot I1. As best shown in Fig. 5, the front of the guide member 'I l is provided with an attaching flange l9, which is turned at right angles to the body of the guide member and has a pair of vertically elongated slots 20 to receive screws 2!, .which secure the front end of the member to the frame 6. The attaching flange also has a lateral extension 22 across the slot ID in the frame, which serves as a guide for the lower edge 23 of the slide member 24.
The slide member 24', or supporting arrrijis provided with a flange 25 which issecured to" the extension leaf 9 'by'screws 26. The rear end portion of the slide 24 is provide with'a headed stud 21',"which remains in the guide 'slot' l6. In'front of the stud 21 is another headed stud 28, which may be moved into and out of the terminal slot l1 and cooperates with the stud 21 to form a cantilever support for the slide member 24.
To install the device, the extension leaf 9 is secured to the flange 25 and brought into the position illustrated in Fig. 1. The rear bracket 12 is then screwed to the table top and the front flange I9 is attached to the frame 6 by means of screws 2|. Before the screws are finally tightened, the leaf 9 is raised or lowered, so as to lie exactly in the plane of the table top 8, and then a nail may be driven through a hole 29 to secure the flange in its proper adjusted position. After the screws 2| have been tightened, the device is ready to use.
To return the extension leaf from the position shown in Fig. 1, it is merely necessary to raise the leaf 9 slightly and draw it outwardly and then lower it under the guidance of the stud 28 in the slot H. The leaf may then be pushed back completely under the table top 8. It may be noted, as shown in Fig. 5, that in the travel the slide 24 may ride upon the finger 22 of the flange 19. While being retracted, the stud 28, riding on or immediately below the edge I8 of the guide member, will prevent the leaf from being raised into a position where it might become scratched on the bottom of the table top.
It will be noted, in Fig. 1, that the guide member I! is secured to the table top and the front of the frame 6. This not only provides a very rigid support for the slide member, but reinforces and strengthens the connection between the table frame and the table top.
The foregoing detailed description is given for clearness of understanding only, and no unnecessary limitations should be understood therefrom, for some modifications will be obvious to those skilled in the art.
I claim:
1. Slide mechanism for supporting a retractable extension leaf for a table, comprising: a metal guide member having an attaching bracket for securing its rear portion to the underside of a table top and having at its front end an attaching flange adapted to be secured to the slotted end frame of a table, said attaching flange including a laterally extending guide finger, and said guide member having a longitudinally extending closed guide slot and a front downwardly open hook-shaped terminal slot; and an upright metal slide member adapted to slide on said guide finger, said slide member having a horizontal flange at its outer end to support an extension leaf and having at its rear portion a pair of headed studs, one of said studs engaging said closed guide slot in the guide member and the other stud being adapted to be guided along the lower edge of said guide member into said terminal slot.
2. Slide mechanism for supporting a retractable extension leaf for a table, comprising: an inverted L-shaped bracket adapted to be secured to the underside of a table top; a metal guide member having its rear portion secured to said attaching bracket by a rivet making a pivotal connection and a second rivet making a lost motion connection, said guide member having at its front end an attaching flange adapted to be secured to the slotted end frame of a table, said guide member having a longitudinally extending closed guide slot and a front downwardly open hook-shaped terminal slot; and a slide member having a horizontal flange at its outer 4 end to support an extension leaf and having at its rear portion a pair of headed studs, one of said studs engaging said closed guide slot in the guide member and the other stud being adapted to be guided along the lower edge of said guide member into said terminal slot.
3. Slide mechanism for supporting a retractable extension leaf for a table, comprising: an inverted L-shaped bracket adapted to be secured to the underside of a table top; a guide member having its rear portion pivotally connected to said bracket, said guide member having at its front end a flange for attachment to the slotted end frame of a table, said flange having a vertically elongated slot to receive a screw adjustably and a nail hole to receive a nail for holding the flange in adjusted position, and said guide member having a longitudinally extending closed guide slot and a front downwardly open hookshaped terminal slot; and a slide member having a horizontal flange at its outer end to support an extension leaf and having at its rear portion a pair of headed studs, one of said studs engaging said closed guide slot in the guide member and the other stud being adapted to be guided along the lower edge of said guide member into said terminal slot.
