ATTEI RN EYS Patented May 15, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
GORSET' neA. Christensen, s n zelesi. Application February 10, 1948; Serial'N'o. 73425 3. Claims. (01;. 'zso).
I?hisinvention relates-to corsets.
Itisan object-of the present invention: to provide. corsets wherein the Weight. of the, breasts are-relieved from. the shoulder, strapsof the corsets. and wherein. the breasts will be supportedby stays extending only to the points of thebreasts whereby toprovide, a shelf-like arrangement. for the breasts and eliminate the weight of the same, upon the shoulder straps.
Other objects of the present invention are to provide corsets. having stays for supporting the breasts independently of the shoulder straps which are of simple, construction, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to assemble upon the body of the wearer, adjustable to any figure a-nd' efli'cient in operation.
For a betteit understanding of; the: invention, reference may be had to the following detailed; description taken in connection, with the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a front elevational viewof thecor-sets fitted and closed upon the body,
Fig. 2. is a rear elevational view of the corsets closed up nthe body,
Fig. 3 is an elevational view of the corsets open and looking upon the interior face thereof.
These corsets are formed to provide for comfort and trimness. Most women as they grow older take on extra weight and accordingly develop extra large breasts which become heavy, often break down and become uncomfortable. If a brassiere is drawn tightly enough to hold the breasts in place the weight falls on the shoulder straps and the pressure is so great on the muscles, nerves and blood vessels about the breasts and over the shoulders that circulation is cut off, headaches are caused, pains are received in the neck and shoulders and often arthritis and neuritis may occur.
According to the present invention the means of support is provided beneath the breasts and extending outwardly only to the points thereof whereby to provide a shelf-like support for the breasts and pressure from the shoulder straps is eliminated.
Referring now to the figures, l and H represent back panels to which pieces I2 and I3 are secured respectively for receiving adjusting rear lacing [4. On the sides and connected to the respective back panels are long elastic pieces l5 with under the arm supporting pieces I6 secured to their upper ends. On the front of the corsets are front panels and at each side thereof are front panels l1, l8 and 19 connected together and to the elastic side pieces l5. In the bottom of the panel I9 is a permit the easy manipulation of the legs. Extending upwardly on the front panels and each side thereof is a strap 22 which continuesv over the shoulder as: indicated at 23 and-- is connected with a rear panel as indicated at- 24. There is one of these straps at each side of the front of the corset. This strap is formed with a strip of material and the edges thereofare'stitched to the outer surfaces-of'the-panels of the garment providing: pockets or channelsand each channelcontains a long stay 25 whi'c-hterminates at its upper end at points of the breasts whereby to provide a support directly underthe center of" the breast. Accordingly theweight on the shoulder strap portion 23 Willi be relieved. The breastweight will not pull from the straps but willlie on the stay. At opposite sides of each stay 25 andv laterally spaced? therefrom are respectively stays. 215: and; 2t curved attheir upperends to conform. to, the. curved; upper end? of the stay 25' and to; provide further support forthe breast. The s de; stays 26-: and 21: are also. posi.- tioned; in channels: formed in the body of the material. Accordinglythere has, been. provided;
a pocket of the stays adapted to receive the bottom half of the breast. The full weight of the breast will thus be supported upon the stays. The stays in no way extend upwardly and over the top of the breast. The shoulder strap portions 24 thus have little use to support the breast. Pressure is accordingly released from the shoulder straps and the straps will no longer serve to cut off circulation, pressure on the nerves or cause arthritis of the arm, shoulders and neck.
In order that the corsets can be made to conform tightly to the body with the intermittent separation a central zipper arrangement 3| is provided on the panel l9. A hook and eye fastener 32 may connect together the lower ends of the panel H3.
The corsets may have in the rear other stays 33 which may extend the full length of the garment. Abdominal supporting members or inner panels 34 and 35 may be provided for effecting the securement of the garment over the abdomen. The usual garter supports 36 for retaining stockings 31 may be connected to the lower edge of the garment.
The stays 25, 26 and 21 extend sufiiciently over the abdomen to provide support thereover but not to such an extent to be bent by the legs or to be pushed up upon the wearer assuming a sitting position. These corsets are formed to have no bulging appearances.
stretchable insert: 21 to On the inside of the front panels and beneath the stays are linings 4i adapted to lie beneath the stays and prevent any irritation of the stays or their breaking through for direct engagement with the breasts.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. In a foundation garment, the combination which comprises a pair of elongated front panels, separable fasteners carried by the inner edges of the front panels for connecting the panels at the center, a pair of elongated rear panels, said rear panels having lacing strips on the inner edges for lacing the said rear panels at the center of the back of the garment, side panels of elastic material connecting the outer edges of the front panels to the outer edges of the rear panels, vertically disposed strips positioned on the said front panels with the edges of the strips stitched to the panels providing open channels behind the strips, and stays positioned in the said channels, said stays having arcuate upper ends and said upper ends being bowed outwardly, the said vertically disposed strips being continued to form shoulder straps.
2. In a foundation garment, the combination which comprises a pair of elongated front panels, separable fasteners carried by the inner edges of the front panels for connecting the panels at the center, a pair of elongated rear panels, said rear panels having lacing strips on the inner edges for connecting the said rear panels at the center of the back of the garment, side panels of elastic material connecting the outer edges of the front panels to the outer edges of the rear panels, vertically disposed strips positioned on the said front panels with the edges of the strips stitched to the panels providing open channels behind the strips, stays positioned in the said channels, said stays having arcuate upper ends and said upper ends being bowed outwardly, the said vertically disposed strips being continued to form shoulder straps, and said front panels having similar side channels thereon spaced from the channels formed of the vertically disposed strips, and stays positioned in the said side channels.
3. In a foundation garment, the combination which comprises a pair of elongated front panels, separable fasteners carried by the inner edges of the front panels for connecting the panels at the center, a pair of elongated rear panels, said rear panels having lacing strips on the inner edges for connecting the said rear panels at the center of the back of the garment, side panels of elastic material connecting the outer edges of the front panels to the outer edges of the rear panels, vertically disposed strips positioned on the said front panels with the edges of the strips stitched to the panels providing open channels behind the strips, stays positioned in the said channels, said stays having arcuate upper ends and said upper ends being bowed outwardly, the said vertically disposed strips being continued to form shoulder straps, said front panels having similar side channels thereon spaced from the channels formed of the vertically disposed strips, and stays positioned in the said side channels, said front panels having outwardly flared surfaces on the upward ends providing a bodice and also having triangular shaped elastic sections in the lower inner corners thereof.
