Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
WILLIAM A. NUGENT, OF SUSQUEHANNA DEPOT, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN RAILROAD-CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 25,520, dated September 20, 1859.
To @ZZ whom, it ntsty'concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. NUGENT, of Susquehanna Depot, in the county of Susquehanna, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Railroad-Chair for the Purpose ot' Securing the Rails at the Joints; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and model, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention consists, first, ot the shell or body d; second, the Cain-Jaws I) b, in which is adjusted the rail c. The keys d d are intended only to assist in retaining the chair ixnlnovably in its place, aided by the spikes e e, and which I hereby naine Nugents Cain or Eccentric Railroad-Chair. Its principle of action being a reciprocal one, the weight passing over the chair tends to increase its utility and power in a direct ratio, for as the cam-jaws are pressed downward the arc swept by them causes them to close the more rnily upon the sides of the rail, thus securing it in its desired position.
My chair may be used either on or between the ties, and in applyingl or renewing them the rails need not be disturbed, as the camjaws have only to be placed on the rail in their places, the shell or body passed under, and, thc keys being inserted, slipped over the cam-jaws, then the spikes being dropped or driven in, as the case may be, and the keys tightened, the chair is ad just-ed.
Figure l is a top view of chair without rail in position; Fig. 2, an end view of chair with rail in position; Eig. 3, a transverse sect-ion of chair-rail in position; Fig. El, top views of camjaws; Figs. 5 and 6, views of shell or body.
Vhat I claim as niy invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is-
