RULING GUIDE FOR TYPEWRITERS Filed July 16, 1947 I 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Inventor Ira 6. Sellers WWW 3% Patented May 1, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE RULING GUIDE FOR TYPEWRITERS Ira G. Sellers, San Diego, Calif.
Application July 16,1947, Serial No. 761,355
'5, claims; (01. 197-113) The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in ruling guides for typewriters for the purpose of ruling lines on the work by the use of a pen, pencil, stylus or the like insertable in a guide opening in the guide, or by the use of a special ruling point attached to or made a part of the guide.
Another important object of the present in vention is to provide a ruling guide which may be constructed as a separate attachment for easy and quick mounting in position on the typewriter without necessitating changes or alterations in the construction thereof, or which may be constructed as a fixed part of the typewriter.
A still further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part thereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating one embodiment of the invention.
Figure 2 is a front elevational view thereof shown mounted in'position on the typewriter.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view taken on a line 3-3 of Figure l and showing the ruling guide in a raised position.
Figure 4 is a similar view showing the ruling guide lowered in position for use.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of a modified construction to be held by hand against the typewriter in ruling position.
Figure 6 is a front elevational view showing the hand supported attachment in position against the typewriter.
Figure '7 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on a line l-'! of Figure 5.
Figure 8 is a perspective view of a further modified construction,
Figure 9 is a front elevational view showing the same attached in position to a typewriter.
Figure 10 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line IDI0 of Figure 8 and with the swinging arm of the guide in a forwardly disposed out-of-the-way position.
Figure 11 is a similar view showing the swinging arm in ruling position.
Referring now to the drawings in detail and first with respect to the form of the invention 2 illustrated in Figures 1 to 4 inclusive, the numeral 5 designates an arcuate support which may be constructed of plastic, light-weight metal or other suitable material and having its endportions formed with vertically extending slots 6 for mounting on the usual paper guide scale l of a typewriter to hold the support 5 in an upright position as shown in Figure 2' of the drawings.
A substantially rectangular shaped arm 8 is pivoted at one end to the central portion of the support 5 by a conventional spring hinge structure 9 arranged to normally hold the arm 8 in a raised forwardly projecting position as shown guide when the arm 8 is swung downwardly into its lowered perpendicular position. I
An opening 12 is formed in the arm 8 adjacent its lower end to receive and serve as a guide for the point of a pen, pencil or stylus and which is held in contact with the work to be ruled by the releasing of the carriage of the typewriter or rolling the platen to move the work past the ruling point. When the ruling attachment is not in use, the spring hinge 9 holds the arm 8 in a raised position out of interference with the normal operation of the typewriter.
In Figures 5 to '7 inclusive, I have illustrated a modified form of the invention which includes a handle [3 suitably secured to one surface of a plate l4 having a pair of openings [5 in its lower portion to fit over the points of the type guide ll of the typewriter, the plate further having a guide opening 16 in its upper portion for receiving the point of a pen, pencil or stylus.
In this form of the invention, the handle [3 is grasped by the operator and held in position against the typewriter as shown in Figure 6 of the drawings while the point of the pen, pencil or stylus is inserted in the opening l6 against the work.
Figures 8 to 11 inclusive illustrate a further modified form of the invention which comprises a plate I! of suitable material having a pair of upwardly extending spaced parallel slots I 8 in its lower edge to provide a flexible tongue [9 therebetween and flexible tongues 20 at the lower edge of the plate outwardly of the slots 18. The plate I! is clipped on the paper guide scale 2| of a typewriter by inserting the upper edge of the scale in the slots 3 to position the tongue l8 at one side of the scale and the tongues 20 at an opposite side thereof as shown in Figure 9.
An inverted L-shaped arm 22 is pivoted to the upper portion of the plate I! at the upper horizontal end of the arm by a conventional spring hinge 23 for swinging horizontally from a normal forwardly projecting position as shown by the full lines in Figure 8 to a rearward position in the plane of the plate as shown by the dotted lines in Figure 8.
The outer end of the arm 22 extends downwardly as shown at 24 and its lower end is formed with a downwardly extending tongue 25 to enter between the points of the type guide 26-.
A guide opening 21 is provided in the lower portion of the arm 24 and in which the point of apen, pencil or stylus is held as heretofore described for contacting the work placed in the typewriter.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the. accompanying drawings it is. believed that a clear understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A- more detailed description is accordingly deemed: unnecessary.
It is tobe understood, however, that even though there has been shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is; susceptible to certain changes; fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the-scopeof the appended claims.
Having, describedthe invention, what is claimed asnew is:
1, A ruling guide for typewriters comprising an attaching member having interfitting sliding engagement with a part of a typewriter to support the. member immovably in an upright position, and anapertured guide plate swingably carried-by the member for movement into and out of. positionxin front of the platen of a typewriter, said guide plate receiving a scriber in its aperture to support the scriber in engagementwith work carried by the platen.
2. Aruling, guide for typewriters comprising an attaching member secured immovably on. apart ofa typewriter, a scriber supporting plateswingably carried by the member for movement into and out of position in front of the platen of a typewriter, and interengaging means between the plate and the type guide of the typewriter to hold the plate in a predetermined position relative thereto, said plate having an aperture receiving a scriber therein for engaging work positioned on the platen of the typewriter.
3. In a typewriter including a paper guide scale having forward and rear faces, a=' base member having a pair of spaced ears, said Paper guide scale being received between said ears, one of said ears bearing against the forward face of said paper guide scale and the other of said ears bearing against the rear face of said paper guide scale, and an apertured guide plate carried by said member and positioned in front of the platen of the typewriter, said guide plate receiving a scriber in its aperture for supporting the scriber in engagement with work carried by the platen of the typewriter.
4. The combination of claim 3 and means on the guide plate: received between the points of thetype guideof the typewriter.
5'. Ina typewriter including a paper guide scale-and atypeguide, a ruling guideincluding an apertured guide plate disposed in front of the paper guide scale and a means for attaching the: guide plate to-a part ofthe typewriter to retainthe-guidepl'ate'positioned relative to the-type guide, said guide plate receiving a scriber in its aperture tosupport the scriber in engagement with work carried by the platen.
