This invention relates to novel and useful improvements in wearing apparel, particularly that adapted to be worn on the head of a lady.
An object of this invention is to arrange a bendable, flexible body in various configurations and designs, said body being supplied with a web of flexible material.
Another purpose of this invention is to secure the marginal edge of the web to the flexible, resilient, bendable body member and utilize the inner marginal edge of the web as a head band.
Another object of this invention is' to provide a collapsible hat of the nature to be described which is formed with various convolutions defining segments, which segments may be distorted to selected positions and retained in these positions while the hat is in use.
Ancillary objects and features of novelty will become apparent to those skilled in this art, in following the description of the preferred form of the present invention, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure l is a perspective view of the hat in a selected position;
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the hat in a collapsed position;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the resilient body in the open position;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the resilient body in the collapsed position;
Figure 5 is a plan view of one type of web which might be utilized in conjunction with this invention, and;
Figure 6 is a sectional view of the invention taken on the line 6-6 of Figure 1.
Referring now in detail to the illustrated preferred embodiment of the present invention, like reference characters are used throughout to indicate similar elements.
This invention has within its purview the pro: vision of a hat, the segments of which may be turned or twisted to selected positions thereby effecting various designs and shapes of a hat, particularly for ladies use. Also, when travelling the hat may be collapsed to suit a very small area thereby utilizing only a small space in a travelling bag or the like. A number of segments niay be utilized in accordance with the design of the manufacturer. It is further noted that the hat may be supplied with an open crown or if desired, the said crown may beclosed tight.
Going now to Figure 4, it will be noted that there is provided a resilient, bendable and flexible wire 10 having a plurality of convolutions l2 therein, These convolutions are so arranged as to be capable of being flexed to varied positions, one of which is disclosed in Figure 3. The wire or strand it may be grasped at one of the convolutions I 2 and simply twisted to varied positions.
Going now to Figure 1, it will be noted that a web I4 is continuous in nature and supplied with two marginal edges. One of said marginal edges is secured to the said strand or wire body l0 while the opposite marginal edge terminates inwardly of the said body It! and forms a head band. This head band I6 is of course, adapted to engage any selected portion of a persons head in utility of the hat. By simply grasping a selected one of the said convolutions and twisting the same to any position so desired, the hat will assume different configurations, other affected portions of the hat moving in unison with said turned convolutions.
Going now to Figure 6, it will be noted that a' covering or web IQ is supplied of a suitable stitch or crochet element. Of course, any material might be utilized in this connection as seen by inspection of Figure 5 wherein there is disclosed a plurality of hairpin stitches, chain stitches and the like forming the said web. This is, of course, but a matter of choice. However, the preferable design is disclosed in Figure 5. Due to the extreme mechanical simplicity of this invention a further description thereof is deemed unnecessary.
However, various departures may be made therefrom without departing from the spirit of the invention and accordingly, limitation is sought only in accordance with the scope of the following claims.
Having described the invention what is claimed as new is:
1. A hat comprising a flexible body having a cover thereon, said body comprising a resilient wire having a plurality of convolutions flexible to more than one relative position to form more than one different shape hat, said cover comprising a flexible web having marginal edges, one of said edges being secured to said wire and another of said edges forming a head band.
2. A hat comprising a flexible strand formed with endless and continuous convolutions flexible to more than one relative position to form more than one different shape hat, a web secured at an edge thereof to said strand, said strand and web being bendable to form and retain various shapes.
3. A hat comprising a fiexbile, resilient, strand formed with endless and continu us convolutions,
a web secured along one marginal edge thereof to said strand, said strand and web being bendable to form and retain various shapes, and the opposite marginal edge of said web forming a head band.
4. A collapsible hat comprising a resilient, endless strand formed with a plurality of convo1utions, a web secured to said strand and bendable with said strand to obtain various shapes of the strand and web, said strand being deflectable selectively to retain convolutions of said strand in non-wearable, collapsed position and in an open, wearable position.
5. In a hat construction, a flexible, endless strand having a plurality of convolutions initiating from a substantially common center and defiectable to various relative positions, a web attached along one of its marginal edges to said strand and retained in the various positions of said strand when the strand is deflected, and the opposite marginal edge of said web forming a head band.
