Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MORGAN CHITTENDEN, OF DANBURY, CONNECTICUT.
SASH-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 25,487, dated September 20, 1859i.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, MORGAN CHITTENDEN, of Danbury, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented anew and useful Self-Acting Sash-Fastener; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and let-ters marked thereon and making part of this specification.
Figure l is a perspective view.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal view.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section. Fig. l is a longitudinal elevation. Figs. 5 and 6 are front views of the shank of the T shape wedge, which is secured to the face of the meeting rail byscrews, i.
A are sectional parts of the meeting rails of the sash.
B is the case or front part of the fastener.
C is a plate or flange by which the wedge shank C is secured to the upper edge of the n'ieeting rail of the upper sash by screws, z'. Said shank is secured by screws, z' to the face side of the meeting rail of the upper sash. Upon the upper end of the said shank and connected with the plate C is formed what may be called a four sided, or conical T shaped wedge, (the face side however being but slightly wedging) which both brings the upper and lower sash together, and takes up the side play of the sash. Said T shape wedge, or inclined planes, is itted to the opening in the case B, which opening is formed partially of a shape corresponding to that of the T shape wedge, or incline planes, in Fig. 3.
o is a slide bolt or a spring catch in the case B made similar to the common cupboard catch, the tace side of the T shaped wedge (next to and against which the bevel end of the bolt o works) is provided with a socket (l. The upper end of the wedge and the end of the bolt are correspondingly beveled, so that as the T shaped wedge enters the opening in the case B, the bolt o will enter the socket CZ and the sashes will have been brought closely together and in uniformity with cach other. Now by pulling back the bolt o, by the hand or by means of the cord D, the sashes will be free to be raised or lowered, and by raising the upper sash, or lowering the lower sash to their places, the two sashes, the upper and lower are brought to their uniform position, and closely secured together in the manner as herein described.
The advantage claimed to be derived by this improvement is a more substantial useful and durable article for use and trade.
I do not claim a match plate mort-ised to receive a wedge catch, or back post of the fastener as in patentof Dec. 19/54 No. 12,100wbut lVhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The combination of a T shaped wedge C with a bolt case B having an opening corresponding thereto-whereby the two sashes are uniformly and closely secured together substantially in the manner as and for the purpose described.
MORGAN CHITTENDEN.
