SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Fatent No. 254,844, dated March 14, 1882;

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD RUSS, of the city of Hoboken, county of Hudson, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Book-Covers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof.

Figure I represents a face view of the cover, which, being reversible, is in all respects the same on the reverse side. Fig. II is an end view of the cover. Fig. III is a view of a book having my cover with one side foldedback. Fig. IV is alongitudinal section of cover with book attached, showing thew'ay the leaves are secured to the cover by tape, wire, or other binding. Fig. V is an end view of one side of the cover, constructed of one piece of material, and havingthe inner edge split to receive the pliable back.

My invention, being a detachable cover, relates principally to that class of books which are used for orders, memoranda, or byreporters; but it may be used advantageously for many other. kinds.

A represents the side pieces of the cover; B, the pliable'back; b, eyelet-holes through the pliable back; 0, the leaves of a book; D, a binding of tape, wire, cord, or other material to be used in fastening the leaves and cover together.

In constructing my reversiblecover with pliable back I use for the side pieces thereof either stiff or flexible material, as shall be best adapted for the use to which the book is placed. In the drawings shown the said side pieces are composed of two-parts, as shown by a a, put solidly together by glue or other adhesive material, except at the inner edge, where the parts are left separated to any desirable width, forming the lips a, or of one piece, on which lips a are formed by splitting the inner edge. The pliable back having been inserted between the lips or, the said lips and back are then fastened solidly together by glue or other adhesive material, thereby making a very secure and permanent attachment of the thickness of duck, selected for pliabili'ty anddurability, which can he had in that material in great degree. I do not, however, confine myself to the use of (luck, but propose to use any equivalent pliable material which byexperience may he found adapted to the purpose 1 and economical in use. 7

In the pliable back, as shown at b, I plaee eyelets, for the purpose of receivingth'rough them the binding which is to hold the cover and the leaves together. shown it will be seen that three sets of'these eyelet-holes are exhibited, and these I find convenient'for the purpose; but I do not confine myselfto the number ofthree,nor to the relative positions in construction or otherwise, as shown in the drawings. I propose'to use two or moreeyelets, as experience shall determine to be most convenient.

In Fig. 1V is shown the method by which a set of leaves while in use are attached to my improved cover. Perforations corresponding in position to the eyelet-holes b in the cover are made in the leaves, through which the-binding D is tightly drawn. The ends of the binding are then tied, securing the leaves and cover firmly together. I use eyelet-holes with binding passed through them, by preference; but it is obvious that other methods to attach the cover to the leaves might be usedas, for instance, by attaching wire or other binding to the back.

In the drawings My invention is intended to furnish a cheap and durable cover, especially adapted by the complete pliability of its back for order, memorandum, reporters, and other blank books. This pliability enables one side piece to be folded back against the other, thereby forming a substantial rest for the leaves while being used without breaking, injuring, or disfiguring the cover in the slightest degree. The same cover may be used for a great many sets of leaves. When the leaves have been written over they may be removed by simply untying the binding which holds the cover and the leaves together.

The leaves may then be readily tied together by passing a binding through the holes therein, and be filed away for convenient reference, which is a very important consideration. The cover will then be ready to receive a new set, as in the beginning, and it may be used successively in this way until worn out. By reason of the reversibility of the cover, which en ables every part to be subjected to equal wear, its period of durability is nearly doubled, and it will, when constructed of proper materials, outlast a great many sets of leaves.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-

1. A detachable cover having side pieces, A,

. and pliable back B, the said side pieces being and pliable back B, the said side-pieces being,

constructed in two parts, a a, or ofonepiece split "on the inner edge, forming the lips a, to overlap the said pliable back on either side, which is securely fastened between them by glue or other adhesive material, said cover and back being reversible by having the same finish on both sides thereof, substantially and for-the purposes shown and described.

3. A detachable cover having side pieces, A, and pliable back B, thesaid side piecesbeing con structed in two parts, a a, or of one piece split on the inner edge, forming the lips a, t0-,overlap the said pliable back on either side, which is securely fastened between them by glue or other adhesive material, said cover and back being reversible by having the same finish on both sides thereof, said backhavjngtwo or more eyelet-holes, through which a binding maybe on either side, which is securely fastened between them by glue or other adhesive material, said cover and back having two or more eyelet-holes, through which a binding may be run to attach the leaves of a book, combined with the leaves 0 and binding D, substantially and for the purpose shown and described.

The combination of a detachable cover having side pieces, A, and. pliable back B, the sidepiecesbeingconstructedin twoparts,aa-, or ofone piece split on the inner edge, forming the lips a, to overlap the said pliable back on either side, which is securely fastened between them by glue or other adhesive material, said cover and back being reversible and having the same finish on both sides thereof, said back having two or more eyelet holes, through which a bindingmay be run to attach the leaves of a book, combined with the leaves of a book secured to the pliable back by the binding 1), substantially and forthe purposes shown and described.
