The present invention relates to mechanical scaffolds and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts herein described and claimed.
Generally, the invention comprises a scaffold formed of two main complementary parts which may be quickly and easily assembled or disassembled. A vertically movable platform is provided and carries a crank adapted to move the platform upwardly and downwardly through winches, pulleys and cables. A locking means is provided for the crank whereby the platform may be held in any desired position. The supporting legs of the apparatus are also provided with adjustable platforms which may be quickly attached or removed from the apparatus.
It is an object of the invention to provide a simple, efficient, inexpensive and effective mechanical scaffold.
A further object of the invention is the provision ofnovel means for the raising and lowering of a platform of a scaffold.
Another object of the invention is the provision of novel attaching means for platforms adapted to be mounted upon a scaffold.
Other and further objects of the invention will become apparent from a reading of the following specification taken in conjunction with the drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an end elevational view of an embodiment of the invention,
Figure 2 is a plan view of the device shown in Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a side elevational view of the device shown in Figures 1 and 2,
Figure 4 is a perspective view of an element of the invention,
Figure 5 is a sectional View taken along line 5-5 of Figure 2, and
Figure 6 is a perspective View of an element of the invention.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, there is shown therein a scaffold having a pair of duplicate, complementary sides generally designated at Ill and I I and each provided with a pair of supporting legs I2. Upon each leg 52 is slidably mounted a cross-tie supporting member generally designated at I3 and best shown in detail in Figure 4 of the drawing. The cross-tie supporting member I3 is formed as a, unitary device, preferably by welding and is provided with a laterally extending squared socket Improtruding from an elongated body portion I5 and provided with a supporting web I6 which interconnects the bottom of the socket I4 and the side of the body I5.

The body I5 also carries, in each case, an upper socket I 8 and a lower socket I 9 both extending inwardly and horizontally of the apparatus. A pair of upper longitudinal supports 20 is adapted to have its ends engage in the sockets I8 and a pair of lower longitudinal supports 2| is adapted to have its ends engage in the sockets I9. Centrally mounted upon the cross-ties I! by bolts 22 or the like is a platform 23 which extends longitudinally of the apparatus and a series of bracemembers 24 extend laterally across the bottom of said platform.
A dependent bracket 25 is mounted at either end of the platform and a shaft 26 is suitably journalled therein, the same extending outwardly at one end, as indicated at 21, and having an operating handle 28 affixed at the outer end thereof.
Affixed upon the shaft 26 adjacent the journals is a pair of spools 29 through the flange 30 of each of which is fastened one end of acable 3! as indicated at 32.
The cables 3| are adapted to be trained over pulleys 33 carried by brackets 34 mounted upon the inner sides of the upper ends of the legs I2 and over pulleys 35 carried by brackets 36 affixed to the inner sides of the sockets I4 and have their outer ends attached to hooks 3'! mounted upon the sockets I8.
A chain 38 is affixed at one end to a socket I4 and is provided with a ring 39 at its free end.
Leg-engaging brackets are provided and each consists of a horizontal support 40 having an angularly extending arm 4| affixed to its inner end, the outer end of the arm terminating in an integrally formed hook 42 adapted to be operated by means of a bolt and Wing-nut 44. A brace 45 interconnects the arm 4| and support 40.
In operation, it will be apparent that the apparatus may obviously be quickly and easily assembled and disassembled and that, when once in assembled condition, to raise and lower the platform 23 it is only'necessary to rotatethe handle 28 until the platform has attained its desired position after which the ring 39 is engaged over the handle 28, thus preventing further rotation thereof and effectively locking the platform in position.
If desired, secondary platforms 46 may be carried upon pairs of supports 49, which maybe adjustably carried by the legs I2. It will be seen that the hooks 42 merely engage the legs with an inwardly directed stress and that the supports 40 are held in position by means of the clamps 43,
it being only necessary to loosen the same by means of the wing-nuts 44 to readjust the position of the same.
While but one form of the invention has been shown and described herein, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that many minor modifications may be made Without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A mechanical scaffold comprising two pairs of upwardly extending leg members, a socket support slidably mounted upon each leg member, a pair of longitudinally extending sockets formed in each of the socket supports, a transversely extending socket formed in each of the socket supports, transversely extending cross ties mounted in pairs of the transversely extending sockets, a platform mounted upon the cross ties, longitudinal support members engaged in the longitudinally extending sockets and means for vertically moving the socket supports, said means including a shaft carried by the platform, a handle affixed to one end of the shaft, spools affixed to the shaft and cables affixed to and adapted to be wound upon said spools and attached at their other ends to the leg members.
