Description

April 1951 J. J. HENDERSON CIGARETTE Filed April 8, 1947 Patented Apr. 3, 1951 CIGARETTE James J. Henderson, Esquimalt, British Columbia, Canada Application April 8, 1947, Serial No. 740,096
2 Claims.
My invention relates to cigarettes and more particularly to cigarettes equipped with a device to extinguish the cigarette, when it is consumed to a predetermined degree.
The object of my invention is to provide a cigarette equipped with a device preventing continuous burning of the cigarette beyond a predetermined point and thereby minimizing, if not entirely eliminating, the danger of starting a disastrous confiagration by carelessly throwing away a burning cigarette.
Another object of my invention is to eliminate the worrying over the chance that a cigarette left at home might not have been extinguishe entirely and may cause a fire.
Other objects of my invention may appear in the following specification describing it with ref erence to the. accompanying drawing illustrating a preferred embodiment of my invention.
It is however to be understood, that my invention is not to be limited or restricted to the exact construction and combination of parts described in the specification and shown in the drawing, but that such changes and modifications can be made, which fall within the scope of the claims appended hereto.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cigarette equipped with an extinguisher according to my invention,
Figure 2 is an'elevational side view of a cigarette according to my invention, a portion of the cigarette paper being omit ed to enable the illustration of the installation of the extinguisher in the cigarette,
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3-% in Figure 2,
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4-4 in Figure 2 a portion of the inflammable cover on the extinguisher being omitted to show the fire extinguishing chemical, and
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on line 55 in Figure 4.
Referring now in detail to the drawing the cigarette l0 forming the subject matter of my invention is equipped with a fire extinguisher indicated in general in the drawing by the numeral ll.
This fire extinguisher comprises a disk [2 made from any suitable fireproof materal and having a round disk-like shape of a diameter equalto' inside diameter of the cigarette paper 3.
The central portion of the forward surface'oi the fireproof disk l2, i. e., that surface, which faces the end of the cigarette to be ignited, is
provided with a hollow [4. A fire extinguishing chemical I5 is placed in this hollow l4 and is secured therein by an inflammable seal Hi. The fire extinguishing chemical may be any suitable chemical substance or mixture, as long as it is odorless, tasteless and harmless.
The portion of the fireproof disk !2 surrounding the hollow M is provided with a plurality of holes ll extending axially through the disk.
The above described fire extinguisher II is inserted in the cigarette Ill adjacent one end thereof, and a warning mark I8 is provided on the cigarette to indicate at which end the fire extinguisher is located. The inserting of the fire extinguisher II in the cigarette forms a routine process of the manufacturing of the cigarette.
The holes I! in the disk 12 permit the draft necessary for smoking the cigarette 10.
When the cigarette is discarded without being completely extinguished, it burns to the disk !2. The inflammable seal it is ignited freeing the fire-extinguishing chemical IE to act, and the cigarette is extinguished, eliminating any further fire hazard adapted to be caused by the burning cigarette.
Having described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A cigarette comprising a tubular paper wrapper and a tobacco filler, a solid fireproof disc arranged within the wrapper remote from the end of the cigarette to be lit and filling the inside diameter of the paper wrapper, said disc being provided with an annular group of aper tures which extend longitudinally of the paper wrapper, said disc being provided in its forward face with a recess for receiving an odorless tasteless harmless fire extinguishing substance, said recess being disposed entirely within the annular group of apertures and free from direct communication therewith, and an inflammable seal covering the recess and forming with the disc a completely closed chamber for said substance while air is being drawn through the paper wrapper and before the seal is ignited.
2. An extinguishing device for a cigarette including a tubular Wrapper having a tobacco filler, said device comprising a substantially solid fireproof disc adapted to be mounted within the wrapper remote from the end of the cigarette to be lit and adapted to substantially fill the inside diameter of the wrapper, the disc being provided with an annular group of apertures which extend longitudinally of the wrapper, the disc being provided in its forward face with a recess for receiving an odorless tasteless harmless fire extinguishing substance, said recess being disposed entirely within the annular group of apertures and free from direct communication therewith, and an inflammable seal covering the recess of the disc and forming with the disc a completely closed chamber for said substance while air is being drawn through the wrapper and before the seal is ignited. 7
