SWORD Filed May 2, 1949 R 1s m 25 \Illii' M A/Maw Patented Mar. 6, 1951 SWORD Frederick W. Moehle, Attleboro, Mass. assignor to V. H. Blackinton & 00., Inc., North Attleboro,
Mass, a corporation Application May 2, 1949, Serial No. 90,859
1 Claim. 1 This invention relates to a sword.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a new sword construction, especially at the handle or hilt position, with a heel made and attached separately, so that the same heel is suitable for various types of blades. Thus said heels may be made of common stock, on a quantity production basis, thus lowering the production cost of a sword. Another object is to make the said heel and connecting parts so simple that they can be produced and quickly assembled by ordinary labor.
A further object is to provide such a sword that is comparable in appearance to a sword having a handle portion that is laboriously formed by skilled labor.
The foregoing and other objects which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, may be accomplished by a construction, combination and arrangement of parts such as is disclosed by the drawings and specification. The nature of the invention is such as to render it susceptible to various changes and modifications, and, therefore, I am not to be limited to said disclosure; but am entitled to all such changes therefrom as fall within the scope of my claim.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a top plan view of a sword made according to my invention, the blade being shown broken away and the handle portion being shown partly in section.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the interior handle portion, and blade, shown in said Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view similar to Figure 2, but showing a modified form of the interior handle portion.
Figure 4 is a top plan view of a complete sword embodying my invention.
As illustrated, my sword has the usual long blade Ill. At its rear end is a reduced portion I2 which provides shoulders M for a purpose later described.
Extending rearwardly from said blade reduced portion I2 is an elongate heel l6 which is made separate and united to said reduced portion by welding as at l8 or otherwise securely attached. Said heel I6 has an opening 20 extending inwardly from its outside end provided with interior screwthreads 22. Fitting over said heel and bearing against said shoulders 14 is the usual cross guard 23 having a hollow collar portion 24 and also quillons 25 at opposite sides thereof. A grip member 26 having a longitudinal hole 21 there through is supported by said heel l6 and it has a reduced inner neck portion 28 that extends into said collar portion 24. Said grip member also has a reduced outer neck portion 29 over which fits a hollow pommet or head 30 through which a hole 32 extends. A screw 34 extends through said hole 32 and screw-threadedly connects with said heel interior screw threads 22, thus holding parts of the handle portion 'of my device in proper position in relation to said blade Hi.
In Figure 3 of the drawings I show a modification of part of my invention in which the said heel is has a connector 35 driven therein with a screw-threaded extension portion 38 screwthreadedly connected with a screw-threaded interior portion 39 of said reduced end l2.
WhatIclaimis:
A sword comprising a blade having a reduced portion at its rear end that is rectangular in cross section whereby said blade provides a shoulder, an elongate heel abutting and attached to said blade reduced portion having a screw-threaded hole therein extending inwardly from its outer end, a cross guard embodying an inner extension portion having an inner flat surface adjacent said reduced portion whereby rotation of said cross guard relative to said blade reduced portion is prevented, another part Of said extension portion having a flat surface abutting against said shoulder, and a grip member extending around a portion of said heel and bearing against said cross guard, a pommet extending around and supported by said heel rearwardly of and abutting said grip member and having a hole therethrough, and a screw extending through an outer portion of said pommet and screw-threadedly connecting with said screw-threaded portion of said heel and holding said blade, cross guard, grip member and pommet in abutting relationship.
