Application June 1, 1946, Serial No. 673,783 4 Claims- (o1. a12- -21e) This invention relates to improvements in sick call or eucharistic tables.

An object of the invention is to provide a sacramental or prayer table which is always ready .for immediate use.

Another object of the invention is an improved form of sacramental table for home or hospital use which may be closed when not in use to have the appearance of a night table, and when needed, the top which is hinged may be raised to extend a folded surface upon which to set up the necessary articles for the administering of the sacraments of holy eucharist.

A further object of the invention is to provide a combined sick call orlsacra-mental table which may be brought to a sick bed, either in the home or in a hospital, where with one movement. the hinged top may be raised to a vertical position and an interconnected two-part surface normally disposed below said top, be raised to a horizontal position and supported by means of pin and slot connections and friction catches, for supporting the necessary articles for the administering of the sacraments of extreme unction and holy eucharist.

Another object of the invention is to provide a pedestal supported combined night table and a sacramental or prayer table which may be set up to support a crucifix and candles which must be set up, and the sacramental spoon and linen secured.

Another object of the invention is to provide a unique combined night and sacramental table having an improved construction whereby the top of the table may be folded to an upright or closed position and present a finished appearance in either position.

Other objects will appear as the'description proceeds.

to provide extreme unction and Figure '7 is a sectional view taken on the line 7-4 of Figure 4, and

Like characters of reference are used throughout the following specification and the accompanying drawings to designate corresponding parts.

In carrying out the invention, there is provided an improved table generally denoted by the reference numeral l, including the four sides 2,

raised to vertical position. When the top 4 is lowered to horizontal position, the strip 5 extends vertically to form a part of the back side of the table I.

The hinges l0 and II will connect the strip 5 with the surface l2 whose forward edge slides on the depending arcuate guide member l3 secured to the front transverse strip 40 of the table I, to

support the surface l2 when in folded or closed position, and to ride upon the same when the top 4 is raised, to form a fiat surface with the strip 5.

Oppositely disposed friction catches M will be supported by the side pieces or

strips

8 and 9 to frictionally engage the opposite edges of the surface l2 when in horizontal position to hold the same in position. v

The surfaces 5 and I2 will collapse and fold into the inside of the table automatically when the top 4 is lowered to horizontal position.

A false drawer IE will be positioned in the upper front portion or surface of the table I, while a real drawer 16 will be disposed therebelow to hold the necessary sacramental instruments when the table is folded or closed.

Three dowel pins ll will be supported in ver tical position by the strip 5 and will be adapted to support the crucifix l8 and the sacramental candles I9.

A pedestal 20- will be provided for the table I, and will be supported by the three outwardly extending legs 2|, as clearly shown in the drawings.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that a combined sick call and sacramental table will have been provided which may be set up for immediate use when necessary for the administering of the sacraments of extreme unction and holy eucharist.

While the preferred embodiment of the instant invention has been illustrated and described, it will be understood that it is not intended to limit the scope of the invention thereto, as many minor changes in detail of construction may be resorted to without departure from the spirit of the invention.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent of the United States is:

1. A table comprising a body section supported by a central pedestal, a top for said section, a transversely extending strip secured at right angles to one end of said top forming a back wall for the body section when the top is closed and adapted to extend horizontally when the top is raised to a vertical position, a supporting section hinged to said strip and extending forwardly thereof, means for positioning said supporting section in a folded position within the body section when the top is closed, laterally extending pins on said strip, recesses formed in the body section for receiving said pins and friction catches disposed in said body section for engaging said supporting section and maintaining the section in a raised position.

2. A table comprising a supported body section, a top for said section, a transversely extending first section secured at right angles to one end of said top and forming a back wall for the body section when the top is closed and adapted to extend horizontally when the top is raised to a vertical position, a second section hinged to said first section and extending forwardly thereof, an arcuate guide and support strip disposed adjacent to said second section and adapted to support and guide the free end of said second section between a raised and lowered position, laterally extending pins on said first section, bearing recesses in said body section for receiving said pins and resiliently biased friction catches disposed in said body section for engaging said second section and maintaining the section in a raised position.

In a table having a body section open at its top, a folding top construction including a top panel adapted to rest horizontally on the top of the body section, a strip secured at right angles to the under side of the top panel and forming a portion of the body section when the top panel is in a closed position, a supporting section hinged at one edge to the free edge of the strip, means carried by the body section for supporting and guiding the supporting section between a raised and lowered position, said supporting section being adapted to extend flush with the strip when the top panel is raised and adapted to be folded within the body section at right angles to the strip when the top panel is closed, supporting means for said strip and means for frictionally locking the supporting section in a raised position.

4. In a table having a body section open at its top, a folding top construction including a top panel adapted to rest horizontally on the top of the body section, a strip secured at right angles to the under side of the top panel and forming a portion of the body section when the top panel is in a closed position, a supporting section hinged at one edge to the free edge of the strip, means carried by the body section for supporting and guiding the supporting section between a raised and lowened position, said supporting section being adapted to extend flush with the strip when the top panel is raised and adapted to be folded within the body section at right angles to the strip when the top panel is closed, supporting means for said strip and means for frictionally locking the supporting section in a raised position, said last means including friction catches disposed in said body section and engageable with the supporting section.
