COMBINED FOLDING BED AND WARDROBE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 254,320, dated February 28, 1882.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN B. HORNE, ot Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Folding Bed and Wardrobe, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to facilitate the folding and unfolding of the bed, as well as to produce an economical and attractive piece offurniture containing a bed and a wardrobe condensed into the smallest practicable space 5 and it consists in the construction and arrangement of devices, as will be hereinafter morefully described, and set forth in the claims.

Inthe accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view with the wardrobe-door open. Fig. 2 is a front view of the upper part with the upper catches moved to the side to permit of theletting down of the bed. Fig.3 is a eross-section of the bedframe, showing the sliding legs. Fig. 4 is a side view with the door and part of the side removed. Fig. 5 is a vertical cross -'section with the bed let down.

A represents the case, to the front of which the bed B is secured, and within which it is inclosed when the bed is closed,leavingasp'ace, G, for wardrobe purposes and as a packingcloset. The case A may be constructed of any suitableheight andbreadth needed forinclosing any of the various-sized beds, and of sufficient depth-say twenty-eight inches, more or lessto allow of sufficient roomsay ten inches, more or lessfor the thickness of the bed,and eighteen inches (more or less) for the hanging of clothes or packing of unused bed-clothes in the wardrobe. The case A is provided with doors D and D, one on each side, that open back of the space occupied by the bed, and pins a or other suitable devices attached to the back, from which to suspend articles of cloth- 1n g.

The bottom of the bed B, when closed into the case, forms its front, and is held in place by sliding catches E and E, attached to and sliding in the panels F and F, on each side of the case. These sliding catches are made of an ornamental shape and cover the grooves, to

which they are secured by pins 1), passing through the slot in the panel. The sides of the bed-frame B are grooved, as shown at d and d, for receiving the pins on the inner ends of the spindles of the pinions G and G, that extend through the partitions H and H, by which theinner ends of the bed are sustained, and upon which they slide for the required distance. The spindles of the pinions G and G find bearings in the case A and partitions H and H, and engage with the teeth of the mutilated pinions J and J on the ends of levers I and l. The pinions J and J have their bearings in the side of the case A and partitions H and 11*, directly under the hearings in pinions G and G. The levers or arms I and I extend a suitable distance back into the spaces between the case A and partitions H and H, and are attached to the lower ends of coiled springs K and K, that are secured by their upper ends to points above-say ate e and serve as the mechanical power for operating the pinions when the pin L is withdrawn from above the lever l. A pin, M, is attached to the lever I and extends through the side of the case A, which has a curved slot,f, for it to travel in. This pin is used to move the lever to the required position for the insertion ofthe pin L.

- A curtain, N, operated by sprin g-roller placed on top the case, extends down back of the head of the bed, which lies Within the case, and screens the contents of the case from view when the bed is down.

The outer end or foot of the bed is provided with two foldinglegs, O and O, that are hinged to the slats or bars P and P, that slide between the bottom of the bed and cross-bar Q. These legs slide outward and close in over the bed, leaving the side flange of the leg flat against the bottom of the bed.

In operating my device the hinged head of the bed R is closed down and the bed slid into the case to the end of the slats d and d. The pin L is then withdrawn and the spring allowed to draw up the levers I and I. This movement of the levers revolves the pinions G and G, and these, forming the pivotal points on which the bed rests, swingit up into place,

the tension of springs being so regulated that the above movement operates the bed unassisted. The legs are then slid up far enough to permit the end flanges to pass over the end of the bed and then closed into the case, and the sliding catches E and E are slid into place and hold the bed firmly in place.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patent- 1. The combination of the bed B, provided with grooves at and d, with the spindles G and G" and their bearings, substantially as set forth. 1
