Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. BROWN, GRAND FORKS, DAKOTA TERRITORY.
HANDA-ANVIL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 254,195, dated February 28, 1882, Application filed December 13, 1881. (NomodeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. BROWN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Grand Forks, in the county of Grand Forks and Territory of Dakota, have invented certain new and useful improvements in the sharpening of plowshares by the device invented by me-a Hand Plow-Anvil and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a device for the sharpeningofplowshares, by which plowshares can be drawn out or sharpened in the field Where used, obviating the necessity of taking the share from the plow and carrying it for repair or sharpening to the farm-house or.
. smithy. By my device, when the plowshare needs drawing out or sharpening all that is' necessary is to turn the plow on its side, place the 'dulledshare on the hand plow-anvil, and bya few blows of a hammer restore it to its original sharpness. Being light, the plowman can readily carry it on his person or on the plow. It is of that form which so readily fits the hand that its use is easy to any person capable of managing a plow. I attain these objects by the device illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device, and Fig. 2 a vertical section thereof.
The device as represented by the above drawings may be made entirely of iron or steel, or of part wood and part metal, or of wrought-iron hardened, or cast-iron with steel or chilled face, and, as represented in the drawings,in that shape or form easy to hold in the hand 7 and to apply to the share without detaching said share from the plow when needed to be drawn out or sharpened.
The device consists of metal or metal and wood, of theform represented in the drawings, a being a reduced end by which the hand plow-anvil is to be held with the hand, and has a broadened face, b, which is to be placed against the share to be sharpened. The face orbroadened end is preferably made slightly rounding or curved, (shown as c.)
I am aware that prior to lnyinvention plowshares and other metallic tools have been drawn out by being laid upon other pieces of metal and then hammered. I therefore do not claim this application, broadly; but
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The improved hand-anvil herein described, as and for the purposes set forth.
-\V1LLIAM H. BROWN.
