f UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GERARD M. PERK VAN LITH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y. l
PERSPECTIVE DELINEATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 254,178, dated February 2B, 1882.
Application led May 2, 1881. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GERARD M. PERK VAN LITH, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Per- 5 spective Delineator, of which the following is a specification. t
The object of my invention is to furnish an apparatus by which accurate perspectivedrawings can be rapidly and conveniently made. 1o Ihe invention consists in an object-glass and an adjustable eye-piece combined for use as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the apparatus in the position of use, and Fig. 2 is aplan view of-the same in a closed position.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. j
A is a box of suitable size, thecover of zo which consists of a glass, a, set in a frame, b, that ishinged to the box A. The .hinges will preferably be fitted with stop-lugs that allow the cover to be opened to a right-angled position, as shown, but no farther, and a brace, g, z 5 pivoted to the box, being then raised against the frame, the cover vis securely held in position. c is a slide, fitted for 'vertical movement in a socket-piece, d, at the frontof the box,so that 3o it can be adjusted to the height desired. A
pin, screw, orother device will be used to secure the slide in place.
e is an eye-piece. The box A serves for holding paper, pencils, 5 and other articles, being a convenient reccptacle for that purpose. The hoxis not, however, an essential. Neither is the construction exactlyas described necessary for the Work. In use the box is'placed on a suitable stand or 4o support, with the cover raised, as shown, and
the eye-piece adjusted according to the distance of the object or length of view. The operator then closing one eye, applies the other t0 the eye-piece, and then traces the outlines', Soc., of the object seen through the glass cover or object-glass, using for that purpose a soft pencil. This operation is illustrated by Fig.
1. The cover is next to be closed, and the outlines or picture reproduced on the outer side of the glass with a suitable copying-ink, as represented in Fig. 2, from which an impression l canbe taken on paper. In this manner aperspective landscape or other picture can be quickly produced, or the salient lilies obtained for subsequent filling out.
This apparatus is convenient for sketchingv purposes, and will save much time and labor to artists. It can also be readily used by persons not accustomed to the work of perspective drawing.
The slide carrying the eye-piece may be tted -for adjustment to and from the glass, if desired, and the eye-piece titted with a magnifying-glass.
My apparatus is entirely and exclusively for perspective drawing direct from nature by tracing on the glass with a soft pencilall the lines one wishes to obtain while the left eye is closed and the right eye fixed to the eye-piece. By tracing afterward on the outside. of the glass with a copying-liquid all the lines already marked on the inside, and placing a dampened drawing-paper over these lines and rubbing slightly with the hand over the back of the paper, a correct perspective sketch from nature appears on the paper.
VI am aware that I am not the first to construct an apparatus by which perspective delineations can be taken directly from.nature,
and therefore do not broadly claim such an ap.- paratus.
- Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of hinged frame b, fitted Withglas's a, vertically-adjustable slide c, provided with an eye-piece 'or opening, and the supporting box or base A, having socket cl and pivoted brace g, substantially as shown and y described. j
