Description
(.No Model.) J-. G. NORRIS.
I MEASURING FAUGET. No. 254,036. Patented Feb. 21,1882.
WITNESSES: I INVENTOR BY @0 W M I ATTORNEY F Unit-no STATES PATENT Oriana,
JOHN C. NORRIS, OF CRETE, NEBRASKA.
MEASURlNG-FAUCET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 254,036, dated February 21, 1882.
' Application filed Xovember 14, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom "it may concern:
Be itknown that I, JOHN G. NORRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Crete, in
the county of Saline and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Measuring Device, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in measuring devices; and the object of my invention is to provide a measuring device especially adapted to measuring all kinds of liquids, and particularly sirups, from a barrel or cask, performing the functions of an ordinary faucet, and dispensing with the ordinary measuring-vessels, which, being open, in setting around often collect dirt and flies, rendering them very objectionable, and to provide a device which shall combine simplicity and cheapness of construction with efficiency and accuracy of operation. Thisobject I attainby the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figurel is a perspective view of my device; Fig. 2, a vertical sectional view, and Figs. 3 and A detailed views of the same.
In the drawings, A represents a box made of any suitable material, preferably of glass, and of a proper size to hold exactly any given quantity, as a pint, quart, halfgallon, 850. At adjacent corners of this box, and lying in a plane which cuts the faces A and A, is a vent-tube, E, and a discharge-spout, B, and at the back of the box a neck, F, the axis of which is parallel with the sides A and A and at right angles to the plane of the openings E and B. Into or over this neck F is screwed a nipple,,H, as shown at Fig. 2 or 4, one end of which is partly closed by a disk, L, having openings at a. This disk is faced off and fits against a similar disk, I, in one end of the stock D, the other end of which is made of a proper size to fit in the spigot-hole of a barrel or cask.
The disk I is provided with openings b b, similar to those, a a, in disk L. These disks I and L are held together by a sleeve or coupling, O, which is screwed on the end of the stock D, and has a flange, e, which draws against a flange, d, on the nipple H. By this arrangement a perfectly-tight jointis secured,
while the box A and nipple H are allowed to rotate in either direction, the rotation, however, being limited to a quarter of a revolution by a stop, t, on the disk I.
Theoperation is as follows: When the box A stands in the position shown in Fig. ],with the spout B downward, the openings a a and b b in the disks L and I are at right angles to each other and closed. Upon turning the box until the face A comes to the top the openings a a and b b'coincide, and the box is filled from the source of supply. The box is now turned to its original position, closing the openings a a and b b, and the contents of the box are discharged into any desired receptacle through the spout B, the bottom of the box being inclined in that direction to facilitate the discharge. The spout E, being situated at the corner of the box between the faces A and A is at the top of the box in either position of filling or discharging, and serves as a vent in either case.
From the above description'it will be seen that all kinds of liquids-as sirups, vinegar, ale, beer, whisky, Ste-may be quickly and accurately measured from a barrel or cask with this device, and that it may also be adapted to measuring other thin gs-as, for instance, the device may be enlarged and placed at the end of a grain-spout and used for measuring any kind ofgrain.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A box, A, having openings B and E, in combination with the disks L and I, having openings a a and b b, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the box A, provided with vent and discharge openings E and B, the nipple H, with disk L, having openings to a, stock D, with disk I, having openings 1) b, and coupling or sleeve 0, substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a measuring device, the combination of a rotatable box provided with a vent and v discharge opening, a nipple attached to said box and having a disk provided with openings, astock adapted to be attached to a barrel or other ves el and provided with a pering is turned upward, and escape therefrom forated disk, and a coupling connecting said when said opening or spout is turned down stock and nipple, whereby the measuring-box substantially as described.
is adapted to be rotated so as to cause the openings in said disks to coincide and permit Witnesses: the passage of liquids or other materials to the interior of the box when the discharge-open- JOHN C. NORRIS.
