DISPENSING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 24, rat a.
Application filed June 16, 1916. Serial No. 104,043.
citizen of the United States, residing at Racine, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dispensing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to dispensing devices and more particularly to that class of such devices adapted to dispense a predetermined quantity of granular or pulverulent material in order that a desired quantity of the same may be dispensed at the proper time, and has for its primary object the provision of a dispensing device of the character set forth with means for agitating the granular or pulverulent material dispensed thereby so as to insure at all times a proper flow of the material through the device into the receptacle.
A further object of this invention is to provide a device of the character described which shall be adapted to cooperate with the shipping containers for the material to be dispensed and to further cooperate with a stand adapted to support the shipping container in inverted position to dispense the material contained therein.
A further object of-this invention is to provide a stirring agitator with a plurality of joints so as to permit of angular movements of the agitator and thus adapt it to reach all parts of theshipping container.
With the foregoing and other objects in view as will from time to time hereinafter appear this invention consists in the peculiar combination and arrangements of the various cooperating elements of a dispensing device as described in the following specification and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a portion of this specification and illustrating the preferred embodiment of the invention and in which the same reference characters indicate the same parts wherever used Figure 1 is a perspective view of the de- V108 Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the dispensing head' Fig. 3 is a section on line 3, 3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a bottom view of adispensing head;
Fig. 5 is a detail perspective showlng the parts of the trapping member of the dispensing head in separated relation.
6 designates a suitable base provided with uprights 7 and 8 adapted to support, by means of ears 9 and 10, a dispensing head 11, comprising a hollow cylindrical member 12 having an extension 13 inwardly screwthreaded at 14 to receive the screw-threaded neck 15 of the shipping container 16 for the granular or pulverulent material to be dispensed by the device. The dispensing head 11 is provided interiorly with a central shaft .17 carrying, by means of a pin 18, engaging an extension 19, a ratchet wheel 20 adapted to be rotated by means of a handle 21 provided with a spring-held pawl 23 engaging the teeth of the ratchet wheel 20. This handle is supported about the shaft 17 by means of a collar 24 independent of the shaft 17, and resting upon the upper face of the wheel 20. Suitably keyed to the shaft 17 is a dispensing member 25 comprising a central hub 26 having an extension 27, the said-extension 27 extending into the collar 21 but being independent of any movement thereof. The hub 26 is provided with a plurality of radial extensions 27 extending to the interior periphery of the dispensing head for a purpose hereinafter set forth. Directly above the member 25 is a segment shaped plate 28 provided with a central aperture 29 adapted to receive the shaft 17 but not to coact therewith, and a fan-shaped extension 30 provided with a small aperture 31 adapted to engage a projecting pin 32 upon the lower face of the flange member 12 to prevent rotation of the member 28 with the shaft 17.
Directly below the fan-shaped portion 30 of the member 28 is an aperture 33 formed in the base 34: of the dispensing head 11 and having communicating therewith a discharge spout 35 suitably secured to the base of the member 11. The shaft 17 passes upwardly through the center of the cylindrical member 13 where it is provided with a knuckle joint 36 which carries a short extension 37 provided with a second oppositely disposed knuckle joint 38 adapted to permit of movement of the shafting connected therewith in an opposite direction to that of the movement permitted by the knuckle joint 36. From the knuckle joint 38 extends a shaft 39 provided with a plurality of agitating stirrers 40 which extend at angles to the shaft into the granular material within the container 16, one of the tending upwardly into the vessel, whereupon the granular material from the container 16 will fiow downwardly through the throat of the member 13 into the chambers formed between the extensions 27 of the member 25, the further flow of the material being stopped by the base of the dispensing head 11 and any flow of material through the spout 35 being normally prevented by the closure of such spout by the fan-shaped portion 30 of the member 28. When it is desired to dispense a predetermined amount of the granular material a suitable receptacle, such as a glass or tumbler, is placed beneath the spout 35 and the handle 21 moved to cause the ratchet wheel 20 to be rotated through a certain distance, in order to cause the member 25 and its corresponding extensions 27 to move the same distance, thus bringing one of the chambers formed between the members 27 over the opening 33, whereupon the granular material contained in such chamber will fall throughv the opening 33 into the spout 35 and into the receptacle into which it is desired to dispense this amount; Should it be desired to dispense only one portion of the granular material the handle is moved into the position shown in central dotted position in Fig. 4, and then moved to the position shown in full lines in the said figure, which will cause only one of the chambers formed by the members 27 to deposit its granular material into the spout 35. Should it be desired however to dispense a double quantity into the same receptacle the handle is moved to the position shown in dotted lines at the top of Fig. 4, that is to say past two cogs of the ratchet wheel 20, and then carried forward into the position shown in full lines in Fig. 4, thus causing two chambers formed by the members 27 to pass over the opening 33 and discharge their contents therethrough. During the dispensing operation the shaft 17 has caused the shaft 39, through the medium of the knuckle joints 36 and 38 and the intermediate shaft 37' to rotate within the container 16 and to agitate the granular material contained therein, the lmuckle joints 36 and 38 causing a deviation from a straight line movement of the shaft 39, thus causing the agitating stirrers 40 to widely diflerent embodiments of my invention could be made, without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
