BAND PLACING APPARATUS William H. Taylor and David S Eaton, Pawtucket, R. L, assignors to The Clark Thread Company, Inc., a corporation of Delaware Application April 4, 1946, Serial N 0. 659,502
1 Claim.
This invention relates to a novel and improved band placing apparatus, the novel features of which will be best understood from the follow ing description and the annexed drawings in which we have shown .a selected embodiment of the invention and in which:
Fig. iis a side view of an apparatus having the invention embodied therein;
Fig. 2 is a side view in partial section of the apparatus illustrated in Fig. 1 at a different stage of operation, certain parts being omitted for the sake ofclarity; v
isi a ieF sb t sho he r ratus at another stage of operation;
Fig. 4 is a front View, sectioned approximately along the line 4-4,of Fig. 1, of the apparatus illustrated in the forego ng figures;
Fig. 5 illustrates a banded skein of thread or yarn;
Fig. 6 is a view on an enlarged scale taken approximately on the line 6-'-6 of Fig. 1, certain parts being omitted for clarity; and
Fig. 7 is a View taken approximately on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2, certain parts being omitted for clarity.
The apparatus embodying our invention, as illustrated in the present application, operates in conjunction with a band forming apparatus which is the subject of our copending application Serial No. 659,501, filed April 4, 1946, now abandoned. Apparatus of the same general type is shown in the patent to Taylor and Kershaw No. 2,151,340 on which this is an improvement.
- In the drawings, corresponding parts in this application and in our copending application Serial No. 659,501, filed April 4, 1946, have been assigned similar numerals in both cases so that the sequence of operations may be more easily understood. Similar parts in the various figures are identified by similar numerals throughout.
Referring now to the drawings, the skeins 4 may be formed of yarn or thread on a skein forming machine such as shown in the patent to Taylor and Kershaw No. 2,246,608. In such a machine, the skeins 4 are intermittently moved to various positions during the operation of the machine by a chain conveyor 5. When a skein 4 reaches the bottom position of the conveyor, 2. pair of bands I6 and I6a are placed'on the skein while it is in this position and prior to removal of the skein from the skein forming machine. These bands may be placed at each end of the skein as shown, for example, in Fig. 5.
The bands l6 and "Ba may be of different widths and may be formed. as mentioned. b the appa- 2 ratus described in detail in our copending application Serial No. 659,501, filed April 4, 1946. In such a case, the bands are formed on the arms 52 of a turret I3 which is intermittently rotated to bring a band carrying arm into alignment with skein is held in accurate alignment with the tur-;
ret arm during the initial movement of the band onto'th'e skein by a pair of clamping fingers H0 which are controlled by a linkage indicated generally at III. The linkage III is operated by a cam 38 which is driven by a cam shaft 4|. This mechanism is describedin detail in Patent No:
' As shown in Figs. 1 and 6, a pair of grippers 51a are disposed on either side of the band IE on the open by means of a spreader bar 9| which is disposed between the arms 51. The spreader bar 9| is pivotally mounted at its ends in brackets 91 and may be rocked by a lever 92 secured to one end of the bar. The lever 92 is connected by a link 93 to a cam arm 94. The cam arm 94 is pivoted to the frame at 95' and carries a cam roller 96 intermediate its ends. The cam roller 96 engages with a'cam C on a cam shaft I03.
The cam shaft I03 is driven through gears I 00, I05, I06 and I0! from another cam shaft I02 which is driven by a drive shaft I00. These gears have a 2 to 1 ratio and drive the shaft I03 at double the speed of the shaft I02.
The arms 51 carrying grippers are moved lengthwise of the turret arm and of the skein along the guide rod II2. This movement may be caused by a cam D which is rotated by the shaft I02. The cam D engages with a roller II5 on a cam arm H6 which is pivoted on the frame at H6. The cam arm II6 carries at its other end a gear segment III which may be secured in a desired position by a screw H3. The gear segment I I1 engages with a gear segment I I8 formed on one end of a lever II9 which is pivoted on the frame at I20. The arm I I9 is slotted and carries a roller I2I which may be adjustably positioned along said arm. The roller I2I engages with a slot in a lever I22, one end of which is pivoted on the frame at I23 and the other end of which is forked. The f ked end of t e lever I23 greases with the gripper arms 51 through links I24 and pusher bars I25.
By adjusting the position of the roller I2I on the arm H9 and appropriate adjustment of the gear segment I H, the throw of the lever ar-m I22 may be varied for any given movement of the arm H9. The cam D and the arrangement of the levers, as illustrated, are arranged to cause-a relatively long movement of the lever arm I22 and then a relatively short movement of the lever arm I22 during each revolution of the cam. By this arrangement a band will be placed at each end of the skein. i
The cam roller H5 is held, in engagementwith the cam D by a tension spring I26 which is connected to the lever arm I22 and the frame of the machine.
While the invention has been shownas embodied in a specific form of apparatus, nevertheless it is to be understood that itmay be embodied in other forms'of apparatusand therefore, it is not intended to limit the invention except by the appended claim.
Weclaim:
In an apparatus of the character described wherein skein-holding bands are placed at spaced points ona skein supported in a banding position in. a skein-forming, machine, the combination which includes a pair of band gripping fingers, said band-gripping fingers being reciprocable between a band-engaging position and a plurality of band-placing positions,.a double-acthig cam for actuating said fingers, said cam having a surface other lever, the position of said roller determining the distances said'gripping fingers are moved by said linkage in reciprocation between the band-engagingposition and the first and second band-placing positions.
