The gauging mechanism comprises means for actually gauging the cane glass and coacts with means fory magnifyingthe size as gauged and includes a. lever 30 pivoted at 31 'to 'a bracket 32 on the frame 11 and having a pin 33 with cap 34 adjustably held in the end ofthe shorter arm of the lever 30 and so placed asto press against a piece of cane time. The release of the locking means to allow the distributor to be positioned is accomplished as follows. lNear the upper endl of the upright 66 is a guide slot ,67 for the shaft 48 previously described. vPinned to the upper end of the upright 66 is a roller 68 whiclrrides on a 'cam 69 fastened to the shaft 48 and having an outline such as to bring the projections 62 on the lever 64 into and outof engagement on the pointer 6l on the chute 46 once dur- 'ing every revolution.
1 eloW thedistributor v46, and constructed to correspond to the positions of the distributor 46 as determinedby the projections 62 on portion 63 ofthe lever 64, is a series of delivery chutes which-.deliverthe cane glass received from the distributor 46 to a corresponding series of containers .71 located below the bed 10, half-ofthe, containers being back of the containers shown in Fig. 1. The
f larger sizes of cane fall into-,containers on the right side as shown in the view of Fig. 1 andthe smaller sizes into the containers on. the left side6 v ln operationV the shaft 12 is suitably driven and a supply of cane glass 27 is placed in the hop r 28. The cane 27 is engaged by the note es 26and taken by the carrier 25 to the gauging position. At this point the cap 34, by the action of the cam 47 and the spring 36, gradually presses the cane against the drum 35 and secures an indication of the size of the cane which is magnified by the.
lever 30, transmitted by the link 38, again' vmagnified by the combination lever composedv of the arm 39, pivot rod 40 and arm 42 and-transmitted by the arm .43 through the end of the slot 44 to the pin 45 and distributor 46 to position the distributor over tlie'delivery chute 70 corresponding to the size indication gauged, the pointer 61 on the distributor 46 being released from engagement with the projections 62 by the action of the cam 69 as the cap 34 moves forward to gauge the cane and being again brought into .engagement with the projections 62 by the action of the ca m 69 after an indication of the size is secured andthe distributor 46 is positioned over the proper delivery chute 70. The cam 47 now engages the arm 42 to force the cap 34 out ofl engagement with the cane 27 preparatory to the indexing of the carrier 25. As the carrier 25 moves the cane 27 is engaged by the fingers 60 and falls into the distributor 46 and into the proper delivery chute 70 to be delivered to a container 7l corresponding to the indication of size secured by the gauging mechanism. The cycle of operations is then repeated for the next piece of cane.
While I have described a specific embodiment of my invention I do not wish to be limited thereto as various' modifications thereof will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art.
What l claim as new, and desire to sncure by lkettersy Patent of the United States, is:
l. In a machine for sorting glass articles, a carrier for said glass articles, means for gauging said glass articles and' means co-oplerating with saidgauging means for autoafter gauging according to size comprising means forremoving said glass articles from said carrier, means for receiving said glass articles, a series of magnification levers coacting with said gauging means and means for causing said magnification levers to position said receiving means comprising a pin mounted on y said receiving inea-ns, an arm mounted on the end of the series of magnification levers and a' slot in said arm for receiving'said pin. i

In a machine for sorting glass articles. a carrier for said glass articles, means for gauging said glass articlesv and means co-op Leaaiea ing said receiving means in position comprising a pointer mounted on said receiving means, an arm, projections' on said armand means for causingsaidprojections to engage said pointer.
3. ln a machine for sorting articles, a member having its periphery shaped to receive and hold said articles in separate rela tion to discharge them at a given point and to prevent movement thereof except in the discharge direction, means for rotating said member and means mounted adjacent to thel periphery of said member and actuated by enga-gementv with each of said4 articles for automaticallydistributing said articles according to the extent of projection of said article in a given direction.
4. ln a machine for vsorting' articles, a member having its periphery shaped'to receive and hold said articles in separate relation, to discharge them ata given point and to prevent movement thereof except in the u discharge direction, means for rotating said charged.V
