Description

Jan. 30, 1951 H. PEPIN on. DISPENSING COMB Filed Aug. 11, 1947 JNVENTOR. LAWRENCE H PEP/N AGE/VT Patented Jan. 30, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 01L DISPENSING COMB Lawrence H. Pepin, San Diego, Calif.
Application August 11, 194-7, Serial N 7&7,9.11
6'Claims. (Cl. 132-13) this class which delivers the oil directly to the scalp of apersons head if desired.
Ehird, to provide an oil dispensing comb or this class having novel oil:control means whereby only certain'quantities oioil as desired'are' dispensed adjacent to the tootharea of the comb;
.Fourth, to provide an .oil 'dispensing combof this class in whichthe control mechanism therein reduces to :a minimum the leakage of oil from said comb.
Fifth, to provide an-oil dispensing comb of this class in which the oil may be very quickly put under pressure.
Sixth, to provide an oil dispensing comb of this class having a compact oil. reservoir integral'with the comb and slight compression means in the end of the reservoir whereby the comb :is very conveniently operated in the dispensing of oil to apersons hair.
Seventh, to provide an oildispensing comb of this class which is very simple and economical in-construction, efficient in operation, and which Will not readily deteriorate or get out of order.
With these and other objectsin'viewxas will appear hereinafter, my invention consists of certain. novel. features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, and portions as. .will be hereinafter described in. detailand particularly :s'et .iorth. in the appended. claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to thecharacters of. reference thereomiorming :a partzof this application inwhich:
Figure 1 is a side 'elevationalview 'of my 'oil dispensing comb showing portions broken away and in section to amplify the illustration, Figure 2 is a fragmentary 'side'elevational view of a modifiedform of. my .oil dispensing comb showing portionsbroken away and in section to amplify the illustration, Figure 3 is an enlarged transverse sectional'view taken 'on'the line 3-3 of Figure. v1,:and Fig. 4 is an'enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken on the same-plane asFig. l.
Similarcharacters of reference refer to similar parts and portions throughout the several views of the drawings:
The bomb body i, dispenser casing '12 plunger 'a m 4, lun er cover 5', .andrreservoiriilier I around the'tapered-.-shank 3'--a. oi-theplunger'a cap fi iconstitutethe principal partsand portions ofmy oildispensing. comb.
Thecombbody l is-aLhollow cylindrical memberhaving .comb teeth l-a integral there-with. Thesecomb .teeth l'a.. are each provided with a central oil conducting orifice .lb extending from.
the ends lc to the bore Id oflthe body I which bore .I.d provides .an oil reservoir adapted to supply oil .throughthe orifice portions lb to the ends l-c of the teeth l-a. One end of the combbody I.is-..fitted with a reservoir filler cap B-andpositionedin the opposite end of the comb body .I .is the dispenser casing 2. Thisdispenser casingl .isahollow cylindrical. casing having a reduced. boreportion "2ra therein in which the tapered shank 3--a-of theplunger 3 is closely fitted and, axially movably mounted. It'wilLb'e here noted that the tapered shank 3a. fits the bore 2a.forming a valve while clearance of'the' plunger head 3bpermits air'passage therearound. The dispenser caseLZ isprovided with an enlarged bore portion 2-1) in. which. the enlarged head 3-!) ,oi-the plunger'is reciprocally mounted, and the spring dispositioned in the dispenser casing 2, engaging the plunger 3 tending. to .force the same outwardly at the end .of said casing, 2 through which said reduced bore 2a extends. In connection with the comb body I surrounding the end. of the dispenser, casing 2 is the plunger cover '5' which covers theplunger 3, .all as shown bestjin'Figure. 1 of the drawings.
In the construction 'of'my comb the comb'body i may be constructed substantially as shown'i'n Figure 2 if desired .wherein the reservoir I --d' communicates with orifices Ie intermediate teeth l-a. This arrangement provides for-direct lubrication of a persons hair without transferring or delivering the .oil directly to the scalp at the rootsof the hair.
The .operation of my .oil dispensing mb "is substantially as "follows: When the reservoir portion I-fdof the comb body I is supplied with'oil anditis desired t'o putpressure on the samezand cause .oil to flow through theyori'fices I'b to the ends. lc of. the teeth l-a, the plunger cover-bis removed .and the plunger .is pressed" inwardly toward thereservoir l'--d. The tapered-shank 3.a. passing through the reduced bore. '2-"a"of thedispenser casing/2 provides clearance therearoundpermitting asmall amountof air to .pass inwardlypfthe dispenser casingZ whenthe enlarged head portion '3-"b of said plunger .3 repenser casing 2-. Longitudinal inward movement. .of.[.plunger .3 causes the oil in. the. reservoir l-.d..to.be..slightly .compressedand with each inward.movement .a .small amount of air passes displacing fluid relieved from the reservoir l-d through the orifices lb or [-6 as shown in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings. When the plunger 3 is in the extended position as shown in Figure 1 of the drawing the reservoir Id is sealed at, opposite end and the'very fine capillary orifices l-b in the comb body I prevent oil from leaking out of my oil dispensing comb. With each inward reciprocal movement of the plunger '3 the spring 4 is compressed whereupon it tends to return the plunger 3 to its original position as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings.
When it is desired to refill the reservoir l-d the reservoir filler cap 6 is removed and hair oil is placed in the reservoir l-d and then the reservoir filler cap 6 is tightly replaced.
Though I have shown and described a particular construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions, I do not wish to be limited to this particular construction, combination and arrangement, but desire to include in the scope of my invention the construction, combination and arrangement substantially as set forth in the appended clairs.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
