PHOTOGRAPHERS CHAIR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 253,829, dated February 21, 1882.

To all whom at may concern:

Be it known that I, JONAS A. ANDERSON, of Lake View, in Cook county, of the State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Photographers Chairs, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the annexed drawings and the letters and figures marked thereon, forming a part of the specification.

My invention pertains to the class of photographers chairs of which the back is'adjustable; and my object is to provide a chair of which the back is adjustable to any required altitude and inclination, so that any ordinarysized person may be arranged thereon in any position in relation ,to the camera obscura in which it is desired to take the picture of the occupant of the chair; and the novelty of my chair consists in the peculiar construction, arran gement, and combination of the hereinafterdescribed several parts composing the chair, for the purpose specified.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation view of the chair complete. Fig. 2 is an elevation sectional view thereof through the center of the back and the seat-frame. Fig. 3 is the same as Fig. 1 with the edge-facing of the back removed. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal crosssectional view of the back, upper portion of the rear legs, and the pawls on line Z Z; and Fig. 5 is a crosssectional view of the seatframe, rear legs, back, and pawls on line 3 3 through the ratchet-teeth.

I will now proceed to describe fully my said invention for the purpose of enabling others ordinarily skilled in the artthereto appertaining to make and use the same, letters and figures of like name and kind referring to like parts in each of the figures of the drawings. 7

In my said chair each of the rear legs, 1?, provided at a point near the upper end with a forward horizontal prolongation or arm, 19, having an inwardly-projecting lateral flange, p, and at the upper end with a ratchet, p, is made of iron or suitable metal, cast or otherwise integrally made in the form of a thin flat plate fashioned to the required shape, the rear edge being provided with a flange orrib, p, for the purpose of strengthening the leg.

In constructing the seat or chair frame the side pieces, f, are secured to the outside of the horizontal arms 19, and the cross-piece f to the inward pro ecting flanges p, by means of screws, or in other suitable manner. .The side and end pieces and the forward legs of the seat or chair frame may be made of wood or any other suitable material.

The pawls S, respectively consisting of a flat bar of iron or other suitable metal, and provided at the upper portion with a toothed shoulder, s, projecting from the edge, in contact with the leg, are hinged to the upper portion of the legs, by means of trunnions or pins and oblong apertures or slots R, in such position that when the trunnions or pins bear upon the lower end of the slots the toothed shoulders project over and lock with the ratchetsp.

The back A is from thelower end up to any desired point, according to the lowest pitch desired, provided with two flaps or skirts, A A, between which there is an open space or groove, into which the pawl-bars S are inserted and operate, the latter being fitted to the space between the flaps or skirts A A, and the width of the flaps or skirts is fitted to the space between the legs P. The forward flap or skirt is provided with a set-screw, which is inserted into a perforation in the rear flap or skirt, by

swinging it backward or forward and dropping it into the ratchet-bearings it is set at any desired inclination.

The dotted lines A indicate the range of adjustment of the back; but a greater range can be given it if desired. The back is also provided at each side edge with a facing-strip for the purpose of ornament. Each of the latter is for the purpose of accommodating the upper portions of the legs P, cut away on the inner side from a point even with the upper line of the space between the flaps or skirts A, forming a slot of the same width as the thickness of the legs, which are for the purpose of said slot made thin.
