The present invention concerns a sliding-bolt lock and particularly concerns a lock of such type actuated by a key that can be screwed through a threaded opening in the elements supporting the bolt and screwed into a threaded hole in the extremity of the bolt.
7 An object of the invention is to provide a sliding-bolt lock in which the bolt in looking position is substantially enclosed by the elements locked together andaccess to the bolt is through a restricted opening in. alignment with the bolt and formed in the element supporting and enclosing the bolt.

A further object is to provide a sliding-bolt lock in which a bolt in locking position is substantially enclosed by the elements that are locked together, access to the bolt being through a restricted opening in alignment with the bolt and formed in the elements supporting the bolt, the extremity of the bolt adjacent the opening being provided with means for engaging a key insertable through the opening.
A further object is to provide a sliding-bolt lock in which the bolt in locking position is substantially enclosed by the elements that are locked together, access to the bolt being through a restricted threaded opening in alignment with the bolt and formed in the element supporting the bolt, the extremity of the bolt adjacent the opening being provided with a threaded hole in alignment with the threaded opening, the bolt being adapted for actuation by a key having a threaded extremity which can be screwed through the opening and into the bolt hole.
Further objects and advantages of thi invention, as well as its construction, arrangement and operation, will be apparent from the following description and claim in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which the single figure of the drawing is a sectional view showing a preferred embodiment of the present invention with the sliding bolt in looking position.
There is shown an upper sash II and a lower sash I2 forming part of a conventional window construction. Upper sash I is provided with a seat I3 that accommodates a barrel I4 having an internal bore I5. The right end of barrel I4 as seen in the figure is flared at I la and opens to amended April 30, 1928; 370 0. G. 757) the exterior of upper sash II and the left end of barrel I4 terminates in the interior of upper sash I I and is closed thereby. Lower sash I2 is provided with a seat 56 that accommodates a barrel I! having an internal bore I8. The left end of barrel II as seen in the figure opens to the exterior of lower sash I2 and the right end of barrel I! is closed by a transverse wall IS, the outer surface of which is flush with the exterior surface of lower sash I2. A threaded opening2ll is provided in transverse wall I 9. Preferably bores I5 and I8 are circular.
Disposed for sliding movement within bore I8 is an elongated bolt 2| of substantially the same circular shape as bores I5 and I8. Bolt 2| is of substantially the same or slightly less length than barrel I'I so that bolt 2| can be withdrawn to the right of the position shown in the figure to be completely enclosed within barrel I! in retracted or unlocked position. In locked position as shown in the figur bolt 2| projects externally of barrel I'I into bore I5 of upper-sash barrel I4. The left end of bolt 2| is chamfered at 22 to facilitate penetration into barrel I4. The right end of bolt 2| is formed as an independent element 2|a that is soldered to main bolt element 2| at 2|b. Element 2'Ia is provided with a threaded hole 23 that is in alignment with threaded opening 2|] in wall I9 of barrel II.
A pin 23a projects into bore I8 at the right end of barrel I1 and is adapted to fit into a slot 23b in bolt element 2Ia when bolt 2| is withdrawn into barrel II; this prevents rotation of bolt 2|. In order to actuate sliding bolt 2| there is provided a key 2% having a cylindrical shaft 25 of smaller diameter than the minor diameter of threaded opening 28. The extremity of key 24 is provided with external threads 26. Preferably, the internal threads of opening 28 and hole 23 are equivalent and external threads 26 of key 24 are such that key 2t can be screwed through opening 20 and into hole 23 as shown in the figure and key 24 can be withdrawn by unscrewing. Any one of various thread forms can be used to provide desired pitch, diameter and other characteristics.
Operation of the device is as follows. In unlocked position bolt 2| is normally withdrawn to the right from the position shown in the figure and is completely enclosed within barrel II; in this position pin 23a is disposed in slot 2312. Key 24 is unscrewed from bolt element 2| and barrel II. In order to lock upper sash I with respect to lower sash I2, upper sash II is moved to bring barrel I4 into axial alignment with.
drawn by unscrewing the key from bolt hole 23 V and barrel opening 243. In order to unlock the device key 24 is screwed through barrel opening 20 and into bolt hole 23 and manipulation of key 24 to the right effects sliding of bolt 2 to the right and retraction thereof out of barrel I4. Turning of key 24 efiects rotation of bolt 2| to bring slot 2312 into registration with pin 23b. Key 24 is then removed by unscrewing, from bolt hole 23 and barrel opening 20.
It is to be understood that various modifications and changes can be made in this invention without departing from the spirit and scope thereof as set forth in the appended claim.
The invention described herein may be manufactured and used by or for the Government :of the United States of America for governmental purposes without the payment of any royalties thereon or therefor.
What is claimed is:
A locking device comprising a first element having a cylindrical bore extending therethrough, said bore at one end having a shoulder forming alconstriction, internal threads formed in said constriction, a second element having a cylindrical bore extending from a surface adjacent the first element partly therethrough, said elements being movable relative to each other to move said bores into and out of alignment, a bolt freely slidably mounted in the bore in the first element, said bolt in extended position being adapted to extend partly into'the bore in the second element and in retracted position being adapted to seat against said shoulder, the end of said bolt adjacent the constriction having a bore aligned with the constriction and extending only partly therethrough, internal threads in the bolt bore equivalent to the internal constriction threads, a keyway in said bolt at the end adjacent said constriction, and a pin extending into the bore inrsaid first element adjacent said constriction and adapted to seat in the keyway only when said bolt is fully retracted.
