STAPLE EXTENSION FOR PADLOCKS Filed July 24, 1946 llVl/E/VTOR.
Patented Jan. 2, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE STAPLE EXTENSION FOR PADLOCKS Nolan Warren Butcher, Alameda, Calif.
Application July 24, 1946, Serial No. 685,988
1 Claim. 1
My present invention relates to an improved staple extension for padlocks and more especially to the type of extension which may be employed where a spaced pair of lock receiving loops would normally require a padlock having a hasp of abnormal length.
Generally my invention comprises an elongated staple adapted to have one leg thereof inserted through the spaced loops and formed with means for receiving and securing a conventional padlock with a normal hasp.
In the accompanying drawings I have i1lustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention according to the best mode I have thus far devised but it will be understood that various changes and alterations may be made in the exemplified structure within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawings--' Figure 1 is an assembly view showing the elongated staple of my invention associated with a pair of spaced loops and with a padlock on the staple.
Figure 2 is an end elevational view thereof.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the staple.
In the embodiment of my invention presently illustrated I employ with the closures 2 and 4, the loops 6 secured to plates 8 and these plates are attached to the respective closures by screws Ill. Normally to secure the closures by means of these securing loops, a padlock with an abnormally long hasp would be required. According to my invention however, a conventional padlock may be employed with the staple of my invention.
The staple of my invention is of one-piece construction, and consists in a metal rod of substantial diameter not subject to easy bending and including the straight leg it free of projections and bent as at 14 to form the parallel leg l6 which is also bent at the free end as at 18 to form the closed loop 20. The leg [6, with loop 20 formed 2 thereon, is substantially shorter than the leg II. The straight leg of the staple is passed through the two spaced securing loops of the closures and the padlock Z2 is secured onto the staple by placing the hasp 24 through the closed loop 20 and about the leg 12 as shown.
The staple may be made of any desirable length and of material of suitable strength in order that the closure loops of various design and operation may be accommodated.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A one-piece extension staple for a padlock and its hasp comprising a length of rod material integrally formed with a bend intermediate its ends, and spaced straight parallel legs extended from the bend, one leg being shorter than the other and being bent upon itself at its free end in a direction away from the longer leg to provide a loop through which a hasp may be extended, all portions of said loop being disposed on the outside of said staple and clear of the space between the legs, the longer leg being free of projections.
