BUTTON-FASTENING.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 253,627, dated February 14, 1882.

To all whom "it may concern:

Be it known thatl, GEORGE W. PREN'IIGE, a citizen of theUnited States, residin gat Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Button-Fastenings; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same,reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. I

My inventionhas for its object to provide an improved button-fastener which is adapted to be applied to either the upper or under surface of the leather or other fabric, and which also holds the eye or shank of the button in such a manner as to enable the button to be readily attached or detached without trouble or loss of time; and it consists of a fastener formed of a sheet-metal blank having penetrat= ing prongs or points to attach it to the fabric, and which is also provided with two curved jaws or hooks, arranged in such relation to each other as to be sprung apart to receive and close upon the eye or shank of the button, all as will be hereinafter more fully described.

In the drawings, Figure 1 represents an end view of my improved fastener as applied to a button and fabric; Fig. 2, a side view of the same, and Fig. 3 a plan view of the blank from which the fastener is formed.

The complete fastener is formed from the sheet-metal blank A, which has asuitable nu mber ofpenetratin g pron gs or points, B, arranged upon its sides and adapted to be bent at right angles thereto, as fully shown in the drawings. The curved spring jaws or hooks G O for connecting the eye or shank of the button to the fastening-plate are formed from the central part of the blank A and bent up at right angles thereto, side by side, and in such a manner that-when bent up the two parts form a springloop to receive the eye or shank of the but- (No model.)

ton, which is attached thereto by inserting the fiat side of the shank between the said jaws and giving the button a twist or turn, thereby springing the lower ends of said jaws or hooks through the said eye or shank in opposite directions to each other, as fully shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The shank of the button, being thus placed in theloop or j aws, is securely held therein by the jaws springing together. The button may, however, be removed, when desired, in a manner reverse to that above described.

It will be observed that the plate A may be fastened to the upper surface of the leather or other fabric by means of the prongs B, which are bent downward in that case for attachment to the fabric, in a manner well known; or the spring-jaws G C may bepushed up through a suitable hole or opening in the leather and the plate clamped to the under surface of the same by bending the prongs upward.

The fastener thus constructed is securely held to the leather or other fabric to which it may be applied, giving the whole construction a greater degree of strength and general effi- 'ciency than if the plate were loose and allowed to turn with the button, as is usually the case in devices ofa kindred nature. The plate being a firmly clamped to the surface of the leather gives the curved jaws greater strength, and at the same time prevents the same from chafing the flesh of the wearer.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is- As an improved article of manufacture, the herein-described button-fastener, consisting of the blank or plate A, provided with the fastenin g-pron gs B, arranged upon the sides thereof, and with the curved spring-jaws O 0, formed from the central part of said plate and bent at right angles thereto, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
